Is an oval chainring affecting the performance of a clutch derailleur long term? I've used mostly #SRAM X9 and #Shimano M8000 with 32t N/W #oval chainrings from absoluteBLACK and OneUp.

Oh wait, you will have the same effect even with the round one on any full suspension bike, as the chain length grows with the work of suspension!

The effect the oval has on the rear derailleur is negligible next to the movement it's getting through vibration and actual gear shifting. The oval causes a movement of only a few degrees (max), a change across the cassette by more like ninety. It's also worth noting that clutches do need servicing periodically. I've done two XTR RM's which, upon inspection were both dry and dirty on the inside. Once cleaned and lubed, the shifting returned to being perfect.

From new the Shimano RD's work really well. I find the clutches less well sealed than SRAM - broadly supporting your experience. They are prone to drying out and ingress of dust, which is what causes them to squeak. They do this with round rings as well as oval ones. Which suggests (to me at least) its not the shape of the ring. Cheers, JL

I'd like to think that it is *exactly* the negligible movement that causes the issue.

@@kylereece575 Yes but at 90 rpm pedaling on oval ring will work the clutch 3 times per second. Just doing a napkin calculation that would about double the workload of the mechanism depending on terrain.

Hi guys, I have absolute oval(34T and 32T) on both my bikes(XC HT and enduro); I have been using them this year and I can tell you this: XC bike, in conjunction with 50T from OneUp, 11-42 XT cassette and XT derailleur - it works like in the first day. No problems, no decrease in shifting performance, no creaking, no nothing. enduro bike, only 4 months of usage(not full season), 11-46 XT cassette and XT derailleur - I had to open the clutch, regrease everything and tighten it more then the factory setting. It still does not work as in the first month of usage. it is not very clear to me why this is happening. on other note, since beginning, the XT cassette with 50T(and cage kit) from one up had a slightly soft overall shifting performance when comparing it with the standard 11-46. I need to mention that I use exactly the same shifter on both bikes(XTR); but yeah, it is the standard one that gives me trouble. cheers, E.

I cant see how an oval ring can be blamed for wrecking a derailleur when on a f/s bike the chain is constantly moving and with shifting also surely an ova is only a small part of the wear on a clutch mech.

LoveMTB. Hi dude. Thanks for the video. I have been using the absoluteblack 32 tooth oval with the black version of the sunrace cassette and the same shimano XT derailleur. Initially on my anthem 3 (exact same as yours!) and more recently on my newer Bossnut. I have done about 2250km on this set up and had a similar issue early on with my clutch. First I knew there was a problem was when my chain broke because the clutch was so tight. When I opened it up the little rubber seal which is supposed to keep the moisture out was folded over and had let a lot of moisture in (Jan/Feb in Scotland) It was seriously rusted and it got replaced under warranty this was while I still considered it to be new, The replacement is still fine despite all my summer riding, probably about 2000km. This new XT derailleur has outlived 2 of my friends far more expensive sram ones running similar oval set ups. For the price I can't fault Shimano XT, with the exception of one faulty assembly which was replaced under warranty. I run Deore Shadow plus on my other two bikes. Also can't see past the sunrace 11-42 crisp shifting at a fraction of the price of market leaders (just marketing if you ask me!).

I run my XTR clutches really loose. I'd say about 2 of 10, as far as the amount of grab it has. It works perfectly and doesn't hamper shifting as much. I'm not busting huge drops and mega-rough downhills tho.

My findings (just sharing in a common interest) 1x10 or 1x11, make sure your chain line is zero'd in on the fifth cassette (can be off slightly but not more than a millimeter) and order aluminum/ceramic jockey wheels, they hold up better than the factory hard plastic ceramic jockey wheels and keep your rear derailleur from doing a side to side flex which causes stress/friction and loosen's the internals of your rear derailleur.

i had a problem with a really strange random squeaking / rattling noise last season too (i own a deore xt derailer aswell). it took me and a friend a few months to find it. i thought the noise was coming from inside the frame, if you have raw profile tires, the vibrations while riding on the road would make the cables inside the frame to touch the tube and produce that noise... (even wrapped all the cables inside my frame with foam, was painfully hard to do) - i realized some day, the problem came from the adjustmens screws on the derailer, they were a little loose and rattling, making a very strange rattling/screaching noice every now and then, just like the one in your video. i put some gorillatape around the screws and that solved the problem. the joy of a silent bike is just the best! if somebody tells you where a strange noise comes from: thats worth gold! ;)

You just made me realise why my shifting has become really bad recently. Thanks!! On the other hand I agree with Justin, I don't think this is related to the Oval ring. I have a 2x10 setup with round rings and my clutch has that exact same problem. I think the grease might not be the right one. I will try a different one and see if that makes a difference .

I have a Specialized Epic Expert with a 32t oval chainring from AbsoluteBlack as well and I started to notice a decrease on shifting performance after 2000 km. Transmission is GX cassette, XX1 chain, XO1 derailleur. Chain is a bit wear but not completely and so is the cassette. What makes me sceptical about that is that I've used the same components for a longer period of time and never had such a decrease in performance. I'm planning on changing the chain and the chainring, but this time for a round one, and almost certainly the cassette too. The problem is that I haven't noticed anything with the derailleur so far, and that might be a part of the sudden decrease in performance. To be continued....

I wish I seen this video last week. I have been running Shimano XT M8000 1-11 set up for about a year & a half (if not a bit longer) I put a Absolute black oval 30t on about 6 months after fitting the XT set & all was good till about 2 months back when the gear change was playing up ? I changed the cable still the same. I stripped the derailleur down & cleaned it put it back together & still the same. I stripped the trigger & cleaned it, Still the same. then I started to rip off the teeth of the top 3 gears & the chain started to slip on the cassette on the big climbs. The gear change was no better. I fitted all new parts yesterday. XT M8000 trigger, derailleur, cassette, shram chain.

how do oval rings affect performance of full suspension bikes...any negative effects on the operation of the suspension travel (particularly when loaded going up hill) Also, any negative effects on your body? What are the benefits that you've observed with regards to how your performance is out on the ride (application of power, muscle fatigue, which sort of terrain it appears to benefit the most)?

Must have just swung it right. loved the feel of the oval but eventually gave it up because I couldn't get the power down properly to lift the front of the bike when needed, just never felt good. For road use they're great though. Maybe they can do a mtb specific version with that extra bit of power at the top of the pedal stroke.

Btw I've found your chain line being zero'd on the fifth cassette plays more of a roll than the benefits of aluminum jockey wheels. I believe your derailleur is squeaking because of the side to side stress from being off center, seems like a almost cross chain issue...but I've found the after market aluminum jockey wheels help reduce ghost shifting, especially with the 40,42t cassette's.

It's impossible to have a stiff moving derailleur and have perfect shifting . With the clutch mechanism I find the shifting really tight . I have taken apart the clutch on my XTR and greased the centre spring . Helps a little but I really don't need a clutch derailleur . Problem is I got a deal on the XTR, XT and SLX all with clutch so I'm stuck with them . I find the clutch necessity the same as the dropper post - not needed !!!

An oval ring does nothing extra ordinary to a rear derailleur. A full suspension bike causes the cage to move every time the suspension compresses. Which is all the time. All you are showing is if you have a make that makes the derailleur cage movement very active, oval, full sus, lots of shifting, that you need to maintain your equipment.

@@Romin.777 it was crap even as a junior road racer back then I could tell it wasn't improving anything and was getting more fatigue with rather than without. Today's oval rings are much better especially on a singlespeed I'm a vet now with somewhere around 250-300 000 miles in my legs I notice even the slightest change I make to my set up. With the oval on the singlespeed xc/mtb with climbing the end of the gear comes later so less torque is required to get over Hill peaks that were previously gut busters, traction doesn't break loose quite as easily and my average speed has improved by 1 mph overall without making any other changes to the bike other than going up in chainring size by 2 teeth . On my Foil road bike (with gears) it's little more subtle, on high speed descents 50+ mph and spinning at 130+ the bikes handling is more stable and I generally find spinning at 95rpm my heart rate Ave has dropped by 5 bpm, seated spinning up climbs again slight improvement in ave speed for the same heart rate and cadence, the only minor and it is very minor, negative is that lurching forward of the bike as your kick it up a notch to sprint out from a group doesn't happen as much speed increases slightly smoother. If your a climber or a spinner go for it you'll more than likely get on with it. If your a sprinter I'd say stick with round unless you want to work on your climbing at the slight expense of aggressive accelerations. Other bonus is that there a wee bit cheaper at rrp than replacement shimano road rings. Off road they're better pretty much everywhere and it's cheaper to try out on a 1x set up, on road it depends a bit more on your riding style. TT's big yes especially longer ones. 100+ mile rides big yes, crits probably not, there's more sprinting out of corners to be done, anything singlespeed hell yeah!

what oval does is fakes your psychological feels to think it is faster and if not, better than round chainrings... If you feel faster using oval even you're not really going any faster is because you unconsciously think it is. Just a matter of riding what you can be confident with.

i have shimano one, i never use the clutch, i don't get the point i don't care about the noise, when you go really fast you don't notice it. i don't care about scratching the paint; it's gonna happen anyway. it destroy the life expectency of the small bottom cog. it make the shifting a bit harder . i don't get this tech, useless imo :s

I want the clutch because I heard it helps reduce the frequency of the chain coming off your gears. I really dislike having my chain come off and I have to go to the side of the road and get my hands all dirty and greasy putting the chain back on.

Obviously don’t get the point. It’s for chain tension so you don’t get dropped chains while riding on rough terrain.

Once I used the derailleur without "turning on" clutch system in an xc race. The chain fell off 2 times(muddy condition tho)...never again without clutch

Shimano engineers thier componets to work together. This is a good example of using mismatched componets and how they effect your drivetrain over time.
