Get David Zabecki's Book about the German 1918 Offensives: bit.ly/Zabecki1918
With the recent "Black Day of the German Army" and the success of the new strategy of Allied attacks along the Western Front and with the renewed offensives in Palestine, British Commander Sir Douglas Haig is confident the war can be won by the end of the year. Entente Generalissimo Ferdinand Foch is a bit more cautious but also thinks the war can be won by 1919.

JonMacFhearghuis Essentially Versailles was to do to the Germans as they had done in 1870,Franco Prussian war,and more recently at Brest Litovsk to the Russians. Do unto him as he does unto you. And a huge percentage of so called civilized Germans rejected the blow to their pride and insisted on Round Two in 1939. The Iron Kingdom not only had to fall in 1918,the entire militaristic culture existing from 1806 or perhaps Fred the Great earlier,had to fall again in 1945. Smashed cities and dead civilians was the only way to get their attention. Sorry but there it is. If you cannot persuade people (who consciously rejected democracy) one way,what kind of Plan B is available ?

Hey Indy, I love watching your show and have been following week by week since 1915. I have yet to write an out of the trenches question, so here it goes. Did the German military begin drafting or accepting volunteers from the area under German occupation after the signing of the he Treaty of Brest-Litovsk agreement? Thanks Indy and team for all the hard work it takes to make such an amazing KZfaq docuseries!

German 2nd (then 3rd) Reich state structure was self crippling in itself at defining war aims , objectives , goals etc to sketch concept of a victory. Their only positive example was Franco-Prussia War in 1870-71 when their idol Bismark (so many German officers and statesmen idolised him after that) humbled French BUT.....Bismark was aware that war was although desirable for political aims (Prussian victory in 1871 created 2nd Reich afterall) was a gamble with human lives , should be cut , short and victorious in a one campaign and enemy should be isolated first diplomatically and geopolitically because Prussia and Germany in total lacked resources and foreign allies. After that German statesmen and generals idolised Bismark and started wars in his vein for undefined political aims only for expansion but they did not follow his methods. May I say "idiots" for them ?

Such an enlightened comment. The whole reason Germany kept losing and losing was that they had brilliant tactical and operational vision but no grand strategy for a system that would survive. People seem to forget this.
@merdiolu
@merdiolu 5 жыл бұрын
Without strategical farsight planning and clear goals , tactical and operational prowness mean little. A German general Ritter Von Thoma captured in North Africa by British in 1942 during WWII accurately summed up "In war amateurs deal with tactics , professionals deal with logistics" In tactical sense Entante then later in WWII allies learned slowly and painfully but they improved their tactical and operational levels. Germans at the other hand never resolved their strategical narrowmindness and logistical issues.

The only plan the Germans had in 1914 was to defeat "the Enemy" and then dictate peace terms. Beside a tiny fringe group on the political right, the Germans didn't had any plans for annexation. In fact the Reichstag even made that the condition for their support of the war.
@merdiolu
@merdiolu 5 жыл бұрын
German militarist ultra nationalist clique who run Germany after 1915 did not care what Reichstag thought. Most of them considered Social Democrats as traitors anyway. By 1918 Ludendorff who was de facto ruler of 2nd Reich not only planning to annex Belgium and Luxamburg and Ukranie but to extend newly acquired German territory all the way to Caucaus even to India ! We have talked a lot about David Lloyd George trying to interfere with the bussines of and getting in strong arguments with British generals and especially with Sir Douglas Haig. Did such a thing ever happen with the French President or with the Italian Prime Minister and did any event in which politicians of one country tried to influence the decisions of high ranking officers of other allied states during WW1?

For all of Germany's Victories they seem to be short minded about the bigger picture. They could have won, time and time again. But they always come up just short of there objectives. Now they will pay the price for there lack of foresight.

My Grand Grandpa was a prisoner in the Donets Basin. He agreed to leave even though it meant he had to fight in the Spring offensives. He did it because he wanted to see his home again. Luckily he wasnt sent into action anymore. He felt angry though for all the men sent into death due to the spring offensives.

I get a feeling that the stagnation of trench warfare is starting to give way like a dam built across weak ground that allows the water to percolate around the foundations until troubling leaks begin to appear in the dam face.

I have a question : Why do you have so many informations on the British Army offensives (numbers of divisions, division in spearhead, number of tanks...) but not so much for the French or the German armies ? P.S : your work for the serie is just amazing :)

Can you please make a Napoleonic Wars and French Revolution series 220 years after? The series could start in 2019 with the people of France declaring the National Assembly and end the series in 2045 with Napoleon surrendering to the HMS Bellerophon? It would end at about the same time as a WW2 series. I think it would quite a hit amongst fans of The Great War.

I wonder what the troops, not the commanders or generals, would say if you had told them that that the war would be over in just under 3 months. "The Germany army's greatest tactical handicap was its mobility..." Guderian, Rommel, Manstein during the interwar period - "Hmmm...."

QUESTION: what were Austria-Hungary final objectives in WW1? Being Italian, it is not clear to me especially what did they wanted with us. Re-conquer Venice? Milan? Annex Northern Italy? Us, We wanted Trento and Trieste, but them??

Austria-Hungary was just trying to survive. Their original war ambition was to crush Serbia. They did not really think beyond that. By spring 1915, they were already in a bad shape and did not want war with Italy - they did not think they were capable of taking on another enemy. But they were forced to. Austria-Hungary was also increasingly wary of Germany, as the "senior partner" began to dominate the other Central Powers more and more. By mid-1916, Kaiser Franz Josef himself did not think victory was possible and that the survival of the empire was unlikely.
