Conrad was the only hope they had of winning. There must have been a reason he held on through 3 failed carpathian offensives, 2 failed invasions of Serbia, 1 failed punishment expedition(which involved a disastrous redeployment of troops from Galicia, 1 failed Rumble on the Piave, and millions of Austro Hungarian casulties. He did stop the Russians at Lemanova back in 1914 though... who else remembers that episode!

I just love (and am astounded by) how much the war still seems to be in flux at this point. I mean, just the sheer manpower and (eventually) manufacturing output of the US is bound to win in the very long term, but Germany is still far from defeated. And then there are so many machinations going on everywhere, a significant surprise can come out of nowhere!
@petergray2712
@petergray2712 5 жыл бұрын
The problem is that both Germany and the Allies kept trying to find alternatives to the Western Front slugfest, and expanded their military and diplomatic efforts into areas they perceived could outflank their adversaries. So the Germans embraced Lenin and the Bolsheviks, and Britain pulled in the Italians and Romanians, and bankrolled the Arab and Caucasus independence movements, all of which massively destabilized these flank regions and complicated the strategic calculus. This is a result of stubbornness of the political leaders in 1914, who refused to believe when told by their military commanders that a negotiated peace would be much easier compared to the looming savage stalemate.

This is an excellently video of the U.S. Army's rapid growth, in just over a year and a half, from essentially a constabulary force, with only limited modern weaponry, to become an increasingly important and effective member of the Allied coalition and a key factor in the defeat of the Central Powers. In doing so, the Army was able to overcome a whole host of challenges: shortages of modern equipment, lack of shipping, limited logistics, inadequate training, an outdated and wrong-headed tactical doctrine, President Wilson's obtuseness in dealing with his military leadership and the constant scheming of the British and French to use American soldiers piecemeal as replacements.
@petergray2712

Thanks to Pershing, Hunter Liggett and Charles Dawes. Dawes is the unsung hero of the AEF, as he was a civilian lawyer that volunteered to help Pershing acquire the weapons he needed to put the Americans into the field. Thanks to bureaucratic wrangling between the Army and the Navy, and President Wilson's poor handling of civilian industrial mobilization, American industry was only just beginning to build sufficient armaments in September 1918

comments lead me to believe. However, it is a well done piece of work and obviously done on a very modest budget. The story is a bit heavy-handed in places, and the scene where the wife tells her husband that he's a loser is very hard to believe. That all being said, it is a dreary, gritty slice of England in the early sixties and is a showcase for the dramatic talents of Peter Sellers. While some of the supporting roles are well done, Sellers shines like a bright diamond with his intense and convincing portrayal of a carjacker, free of any moral pretense. If this film had been widely seen, I am convinced that many directors would have tried to get Sellers into more serious roles. His ability to leave all traces of the Goon comedy figure behind is truly astounding. If you are interested in post-war English cinema, this is an interesting film. If you are a fan of Peter Sellers, it's a must see.

Excellent timeline series. When watching, I sometimes wonder if it will ever end. How it must have been for those who lived through it. I just watched your segment on George Guynemer. While you mentioned that there were numerous tributes for him, there was no mention that one of the Spad aircraft he flew (according to the placard) still exists and is on display at a museum in Paris. Great museum to go to. Thanks for bringing a freshness to this pivotal period in history. "Guynemer ‘s Spad VII aircraft descends upon the Air and Space Museum in Le Bourget. Remember that the American troops had been taught how to fight a modern war by the Australians. In the Americans first few battles the American officers had been sent on leave and the troops were actually led by Australian officers. The Australian officers reported that the American troops were very brave, if a bit too enthusiastic, and if well led they would acquit themselves well in future battles.

I think that there is one thread throughout this series that is sort of unexpected. And that's that, in much the same way to how it happened in the war, at the beginning of the series your listing off the numbers of people dead in these battles was saddening and disheartening, the thousands dead minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week. But also, much the same way it happened in the war, it's hard not to just gloss over the fact that there as still thousands of human men dying daily in skirmishes on the front. And thousands of other people dying of starvation in the cities. It's hard to not be numb to it. Much the same as what happened in the war.

The soldiers of Germany may be forced to retreat, but this will only shorten the front, and allow us to better concentrate our forces at our formidable defensive positions! The Entente's resolve will break when wave after wave of their men are cut down before the mighty Hindenburg Line!

I think that many people forget that World War 1 was, indeed, a WORLD war. In every comment section about anything even remotely talking about WW1 there is always that one douch bickering about who did what. People often forget that the war was fought all over the world with many theaters. There was of course, the Western and Eastern Fronts, but there was also the African fronts, the Serbian front, the Mesopotamian front, the Italian front, etc. A war like this can't be put into terms of "The British/French/Americans/etc won the war by themselves". It was a combined effort that won the war, and that's just the truth. I hope people can learn to accept this one day but it's highly unlikely.
@DeathOnSernpidal

Very well put. A lot of countries and nations contributed their efforts in ways large and small. All of that mattered. All those forces and fronts influenced one another. Even successful actions and battles weakened the Central Powers somewhere else to some degree. Even Allied countries like Montenegro, Japan, Belgium, Romania, and Portugal all contributed.

@@DeathOnSernpidal Glad to see you agree. It gets really annoying when people start to buy in to their countries propaganda and start spouting nonsense trying to downplay nations in a war like the Great War.

3:56 the Belgians had been held back since 1914. I wondered why their casualties for the war were relatively low. Did this lead to resentment by the British and Empire forces fighting in Flanders?
@petergray2712

No. It's just that ninety percent of the Belgian population were under a tight German occupation. If the Belgian Army suffered heavy casualties like they did at the Battle of the Yser, where were the replacements going to come from?
