"MGM is an asshole" This ain't no lie. You ever hear about how they treated Stallone during "Rocky Balboa"? So Stallone wants to do a sixth Rocky and he meets the head of MGM at a party and the guy tells him "Come on in Monday morning and let's talk about it." Monday rolls around and Stallone comes in for the meeting, but the guy he talked to isn't there. Instead, he gets some punk-ass second in command who tell Sly "We have no interest in doing another Rocky." Stallone replies, "Well, your boss told me to come in to talk about it," and punk-ass second in command screams at him "I RUN THIS STUDIO! NO ONE LORDS OVER ME!" despite the fact someone obviously does. At any rate, Columbia Pictures and Revolution Studios catch wind that Stallone wants to do another Rocky and they're all "We're in!" But since MGM owns the rights to Rocky, they just have to be involved. So they all get together and work out a deal where Stallone/Columbia/Revolution go off and produce the movie independently as a negative pickup for MGM, who'll distribute it. Stallone funnels his acting, writing, and directing fee back into the movie (essentially making it for nothing) and proceeds to make "Rocky Balboa" for 25 million dollars (which, in 2005 dollars, is roughly the one million budget it took to make the first Rocky in 1976). So anyway, it comes time to release "Rocky Balboa", but punk-ass second-in-command is still pissed that Stallone went around his punk-ass and made the movie anyway. So what does he do? The night before theatrical release, he leaks a DVD-quality copy of the film onto the internet! It doesn't work, though, and the movie goes on to be a huge success, racking in 100 million at the box office. 100 million may not sound like much, but on a 25 mil budget, that's a good return. So Stallone's deal with MGM said that he would get a percentage of the profits as his payment for the film (known in the business as "back end"). Well, as of 2010 or so, MGM claimed they never made any money from "Rocky Balboa", and didn't pay Sly jack. So if you're wondering why Sly initially turned down "Creed" for years, this is why. He had no interest in working with MGM ever again. It wasn't until MGM said they were actually going to recast Rocky, that Stallone relented and did the movie (he essentially took the position of "Well, if anyone's gonna fuck up my character, it's gonna be me"). That's the kind of dickholes you're dealing with at MGM.
