Overclocked Core i7 vs. 11,000rpm 120mm Fan

So I've set my i7 5820K to run a Prime95 Blend test passively at 4.2GHz and I'm going to see what happens to the load temperatures when I blast the CPU cooler with the G1238V48BHZP running at 11,000rpm. The ambient temperature was around 21-22C.

Finally a "desktop" fan that can cool the 14900k! Imagine 2 or even 3 of those on a 4090 running furmark. With those insanely overbuilt cooler we might even get near watercooling temps.

I can just tell the model by the casing of the fan. It was the model with the 7. something static pressure right? I think it was the THD1348HE

Not bad! If only it wasn't so loud. But if it was some kind of mining station and it was standing somewhere in your garage - no problem. I know people have done this with 220V coolers, but for GPUs.

Exactly. If you have a separate room with decent sound proofing, this is how you cool a PC. :)

You seem like a Thermalright fan (no pun intended). I've been one since the days of the slk 900 days. The rise of Noctua and their evangelist influencer advertising strategy has coincided with the downfall of the popularity of Thermalright products in western markets. Thermalright is still very strong in Eastern markets if I'm not mistaken but their products are increasingly difficult to find in Europe and USA. Still, they're a great company and they stand by their products as much as Noctua if not more. Just bought an lga1700 and am5 kit for my TRUE120, considering how old it is, this is remarkable consumer friendly behavior from them.

SLK! I Ah the golden age of DIY pc modding where you shop for water cooling parts at an aquarium shop lol. Thermalright was the king of heatsinks! That TRUE copper heatsink weighs 2 kilos! Utter madness.
@FanPhys
@FanPhys 5 ай бұрын
Yep, I'm by no means a Thermalright-only consumer but their coolers have always been remarkable value, and very much top tier. I've tested various other air coolers and have yet to find one that squarely beats the TS140P (not even the NH-D15 does). I only recently found out that the original TRUE is alive and well in the form of a fourth revision, as you say mostly in the eastern world but it can be obtained - perhaps I'll test it in a future video!

How do you power these fans? Do you need a PWM controller or just DC voltage?
@FanPhys
@FanPhys 5 ай бұрын
I made a short video about the power supply I'm using - it's from a Cisco network switch and gives me 56V DC output. To power the fan at full speed is easy; to control the speed is a different matter - I'm using a custom made square wave generator to send a control signal to the fan, also in another of my videos from a couple of years ago. :)

There is a wee problem there: you really needed to populate the second DRAM channel and used smallest FFTs in P95 to achieve maximum heat and keep it that way. Blend mode alternates between all the FFT sizes you see on the screen and is to test the stability of practically everywhere in the CPU (RAM is counted as part of CPU for this purpose). Smallest FFT size puts the most stress on the FPU while the largest one puts it on the RAM.
@FanPhys
@FanPhys 5 ай бұрын
Yep I'm aware - for all my thermal tests I do small FFTs, but this was just a bit of fun. :)

@@FanPhys what you say is like deflating the football before playing for fun; it doesn't make sense at all. You didn't even say anything about 5820K having not 2 but 4 memory channels because you have no idea what I am talking about here. It is not difficult nor inconvenient to click on smallest FFTs which would give you the highest heat load and it is what you do if you are testing some variable in the cooling system. Now you could have a specific reason not to use the highest heat load but it is still counterintuitive to use the blend mode since it's not a stable one. Blend mode is for scenarios where an overclock may be stable for one kind of load but not the other, or when you overclocked the cpu and the memory at the same time. I am not even getting into the whole unpopulated memory channel thing... If you are using p95 you must know stuff like this there is simply no point otherwise. Chalking it up to "just having fun" doesn't work mate, not really. You are making the fact that you don't know what you are doing more apparent and it's funny in a not really fun way when the objective is the exact opposite.

I feel like at that point the heatpipes would be thermally saturated so there's a point of diminishing returns
@DecayedPage
@DecayedPage 5 ай бұрын
That point is quickly reached
@FanPhys
@FanPhys 5 ай бұрын
Possibly, but the pipes themselves are made of copper so even taking the internals out of the equation, they are still conducting heat from the copper base of the cooler. Diminishing returns for sure, but returns nonetheless. :)

@@DecayedPage Most pc cases now have glass sides so even at full speed they aren't as loud as you think. I'm using a super old haf case and even at full tilt it's not bad. I'm protected by the wad of cash I saved on an aio lol 😂
