Oh our singing star! HOW BEAUTIFUL she scrubs up eh? The flick of her hips surpassed only by the way she kicked her dress up like a boss. I've got goose bumps and I'm crying. Bravo bravo bravo!!! and thank you to all who took part - it was like the Wizard of Oz, everyone got their missing element (which was always there all the time). I do recommend watching DB on Steven Bartlett - Diary of a CEO. What an unpretentious, vulnerable and sweet man he is.... surprisingly shy. Love him to bits, one of my favourite Brits - a real National Treasure.

Do you REALISE how IMPORTANT and PROFOUND this experiment is?!! 😳 Derren points us towards one of the most insidious misunderstandings in human psychology! That people and circumstances can MAKE us feel a certain way! But the TRUTH is... NOTHING outside of us can determine our experience NOW! Not bridges, not people (not the past, not the future, not our body, not OTHER COUNTRIES (war), not our work, not the weather, not spiders etc. etc. etc.) What we're experiencing is coming from INSIDE US! Our feelings are coming from THOUGHT in the moment! Which is GREAT NEWS! Because, as you've seen in this video, WE can OVERRIDE THE FEELING and respond to the present reality based on what we actually want!!!! In a way that makes more sense!! There's a feeling of calmness and a wisdom and creativity that's hovering below our unhelpful thoughts... Thank you so much Derren for your creativity and effort ~ you're part of an army of people around the world trying to quash this misunderstanding once and for all, with a vision of a happier world. (Big pharma won't like it!!) ❤

Derren using his placebo to help people with fear, phobias and stopping smoking makes perfect sense. There are psychological elements to all these things, therefore suggestion and placebo can obviously have an impact. However, his suggestion that a placebo cured people of allergies is nonessential. Allergies are real, biochemical disorders - it's irresponsible and factually incorrect to suggest that the power of suggestion is a potential therapy.

It is great that these people were able to overcome fear that had a negative effect on their life. Thr truth DARPA has been working on pharmaceuticals as well as neuro implants that remove fear from soldiers which I am not sure is a good thing because human beings as well as many animals are wired for fear and anxiety to avoid danger....so often fear is a mechanism that keeps us safe so removing fear all together cannot be good

For Kati, you should have had actors come up and start clapping or smiling and waving other people to come listen. In her case people did walk up to listen but they were stone faced random people on the street. Wit nick he did good as he said because the actor didn’t have an issue with him. I wanted to see a direct conflict with HIM by the actor. He might have failed that first test.

I do love Derren Brown, BUT... remember, this is a TV show, that follows a tried and tested narrative arc, particularly including the part where it looks like it hasn't worked (in this case the singer), and then turns out to have worked better than you thought - he uses this in almost every trick! What you think is happening (in this case, a placebo curing all kinds of conditions), is NOT what is happening. That is just what the show is superficially about, but this CANNOT be what is actually happening. I've worked in clinical research for over 20 years. To do any sort of research on human subjects, there needs to be informed consent, supported by mandatory ethics approval by an approved review committee. The show works on 2 levels: you are watching people who think they know what's happening, but you the audience know more (level 1), but you the audience are also being manipulated in the same way, and think you know what's happening, but the show's creators know more (level 2). NONE of Derren's stunts like this (whether it be getting people to rob a bank, steal artwork, play death by Russian roulette, or in this case, treat a disease with a placebo), NONE would be allowed by a research ethics committee for the purpose of a TV magician's show, whose approval would be mandatory for ANY research with humans. A TV show involving research on human subjects, would be no different, and wouldn't constitute a pass to the Declaration of Helsinki (1964) on human experimentation. The ethical implications of the premise of a show like this (or any of his other similar ones) would be enormous, myriad, potentially long-term and multiplicative, and notoriously difficult to predict. As such, the premise itself would NEVER be allowed by an ethics committee, let alone the obvious risk of harm in additional scenes like the fight in the pub. An ethics committee would have to weigh the benefits vs the risk, and since this is a TV show, and the only conceivable benefit is increased viewer ratings, this could never outweigh the risks of surreptitiously manipulating vulnerable people like this. So this ISN'T what is happening, even if it appears so, it isn't! There is also no such thing as a 'snap induction' to hypnotise someone to sing at a level they were previously incapable of performing, or any other exceptional ability that Derren has seemingly created 'through the power of suggestion' during his shows. As a neuroscientist, I can tell you, this just isn't how the brain works! And yet... I love Derren's shows, because, even if you watch it with level 2 in mind, you're still left wondering what has happened. Clearly he hasn't done what the show is purporting him to have done (level 1). If we assume everyone isn't just acting, and pretending to be involved when they're fully aware and essentially stooges (that would be asinine, a waste of time and I think beneath Derren who is a great entertainer, and has stated stooges are never used in his shows), then what have we just seen? Clearly it ISN'T working on level 1... so what are they doing on level 2? That, to me, is the most interesting piece. When people discuss the programme at level 1 (as evidenced by the comments section on this video), or even write in to complain how unethical it is to do these things, they too have been successfully manipulated, just like the protagonists in the show, and thus the show works at multiple levels. That's great TV! Well done Derren! He's great live too - go watch his shows.
