Here I share my 30-year struggle with anxiety starting in adolescence and finally ending in my forties. I talk about the three things that finally allowed me to find anxiety relief and share the insights that helped me see how to get past anxiety and put this behind me. I also dive into why circumstances like chronic illness (my ME/CFS - Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) didn't matter!

Raelan you have been my guiding light in recovery from ME/CFS! Without you I don't know where I would be today. I still have a long way to go but you have given me hope that no one else did. And because of the pandemic, the support I was referred for never materialised. So I would have been lost. Thank you from the bottom of my heart ♥️

This is so fascinating to watch. I’m 99% sure you won’t remember me, but we actually went to high school together, and-granted, it was 29473728 years ago-but I always remembered you in a way that was entirely unlike how you described your high school experience. I think that’s an amazing indication of how we, especially those of us who came from the generation in which we grew up, had to pretend we were okay even when we weren’t. And sometimes, it’s so dangerously convincing that nobody ever asks if you’re actually okay-it definitely never occurred to me that you were dealing with things that that were bubbling below the surface. I ran across this channel because an ex of mine found your work so helpful and so comforting for dealing with what she battled. And I haven’t seen or even spoken to you since the early 90s, but I’m so weirdly glad that you not just got past your own struggles, but you’re also providing your time and energy towards helping others who are dealing with the same difficulties. For what it’s worth, I was always left with the impression that you were incredibly kind, and I’m unexpectedly happy to see that you still are.

Hey Jonathan! Wow, I need a year book so I can put the name to the face! What a nice surprise to find your message here and how nice of you to take the time to share this. It's fascinating to hear how I seemed to others back then (or at least to you!) because looking back I remember myself pretty much as a low functioning insecure mess. And what a small world that you were dating someone who ran across my channel. I hope that whatever health challenges she's facing she's doing ok. And I hope that you are doing great also! Thanks again for the kind message, I very much appreciate it ☺️

Perception is so weird, isn’t it? I can say that I categorically remember you as being so smart, so funny, so kind, and so capable. But looking back, growing up in the time that we both did, especially going to high school on the north side, I think we had to sort of perform that level of healthiness because there just was no conversation to be had about mental health. I’m sorry that you were actually dealing with much more than you let on, but I’m also glad to find out, decades later, that you were able to address it in a healthy way. It really is a small world. My ex and I are still friends, and she’s doing much better now, thanks in no small part to being able to watch your videos and find strategies for dealing with CFS at a time when very few of the medical professionals she was consulting had any idea how to address her symptoms. She mentioned how helpful she found your channel, and it took me a minute (okay, more like a few days) to realize why your name was so familiar. I have a feeling we probably still have at least a small handful of mutual friends on Facebook, so I’ll send you a message sometime. In the meantime, thanks for all that you do. At a time when everything can seem utterly awful and hopeless, I think the world needs more of the positive energy and love that you put into it.

@@jonathanjames3964 I'm so glad to hear that she's doing better! And that's so nice to hear that my videos were helpful in some way. And perception is really strange, I agree! It's fascinating how we can feel one way on the inside and appear so different on the outside. Thanks so much for sharing your perception of me back then, it was really nice to hear (and so kind of you to say!) And I'd love to hear from you on FB - please reach out! Thanks again for taking the time to share all of this 🌟

Yes, we have all been there! Let me just say that I'm enjoying your book and getting lots of great ideas. Although it's challenging, I am beginning to experience a small change. I'm beginning to let my body dictate the pace rather than my mind. And most importantly, I am beginning to dream of a brighter future! Over the years I have tried to live within my limits, without believing that I could reach beyond my present state because of the messaging around ME/CFS. Raelan, your vulnerability and story of recovery is an important one, and such a gift to others! I think anyone battling this disease is courageous. I am grateful that you take the time out of your very busy life to share your story with us. I don't understand why people are negative. I just don't get it. 🙏

Feelings of low self-worth. Oof that hit the spot. That bachelor's/master's degree example is literally me the last 5 years. But! Let us also not forget that trauma (what I like to call "injuries") also cause stuck survival energy that manifests as MAJOR anxiety in the body. Releasing that is hugely important

I suffered with heightened anxiety and panic attacks back in the mid 90's are two life changing events very close together. Looking back now I don't think it's ever left me as I still get quite anxious now over simple tasks like attending medical appointments. Suffering with ME/CFS hasn't helped as I can get anxious over outside influences such as world events. I'm working on this daily and daily meditation is helping a lot.as is restorative light movements like stretching.

Can you say how you're got a handle on it? I'm getting worse w/ depression and anxiety. Never had such a long spell of it and it's crippling. I've tried tapping lately and I don't think it's helping.

Realan, I just love your videos giving so much advise and hope, I am happy having found you here. Your are so authentic and inspiring, I really appreciate that. Thanks for sharing your story, for your interviews and your compassion for us suffering. One question as I am not an English speaker: what is the difference between anxiety and fear? I thougt it is mainly the same, but on a spectrum...

Fear is from some specific trigger. An animal can make you fearful or a sudden startle. Anxiety is nebulous and there doesn't seem to be an apparent source. It just crops up and makes you feel all adrenaline charged and tense. At least w/ fear, you know what you're dealing w/.

Thanks for sharing your story. So happy you are feeling so much more comfortable now! Could you please link to books/talk if you still remember where you got your insights from? Just like recovering from CFS I think there are so many ways to overcome anxiety and inner stress, and I always love getting new perspectives on this 😊

School is rough on a lot of people. I was bullied by two guys in elementary and then in high school. I chewed my nails off then and I still do. And its no different in private schools. Schools today are not good for anyone... we think a lot of children are being impoverished by being kept out of school due to covid, but I think it's not true. I've heard that all of what we learn in high school could be taught in 2 years!

Thanks for this video Raelan. Very interesting. I also used to wake up hungry at 03:00. Intermittent fasting / restricted feeding window has relieved me of my constant sugar cravings. I’m sure it has decreased my cortisol levels too, so also good for stress / anxiety.
