In his typical straightforward, no-nonsense style, jeweler and cowboy Shane Hendren shares the stories of how he lost his wife and his son in the first couple of months of 2020. But it's the surprising way that he navigated through his grief that makes this dark phase of Shane's life ultimately a story of hope and resilience. Just as jewelers work-harden soft metals with a hammer, some people become stronger when life knocks them down. Sensitive, and important, topics are discussed, so join me as we learn how Shane got through seemingly overwhelming loss with his art.

💔 "Some people look for a beautiful place, others make a place beautiful. As one can see when the eyes are open, so one can understand when the heart is open. Your heart is not living until it has experienced pain... the pain of love breaks open the heart, even if it is as hard as a rock. God breaks the heart again and again and again until it stays open. Our virtues are made by love, and our sins are caused by the lack of it. Love itself is the healing power and the remedy for all pain. I asked for strength, and God gave me difficulties to make me strong. I asked for wisdom, and God gave me problems to learn to solve. I asked for prosperity, and God gave me a brain and brawn to work. I asked for courage, and God gave me dangers to overcome. I asked for love, and God gave me people to help. I asked for favors, and God gave me opportunities. I received nothing I wanted. I received everything I needed. Each individual composes the music of his own life. If he injures another, he brings disharmony. When his sphere is disturbed, he is disturbed himself, and there is a discord in the melody of his life. If he can quicken the feeling of another to joy or to gratitude, by that much he adds to his own life; he becomes himself by that much more alive. Whether conscious of it or not, his thought is affected for the better by the joy or gratitude of another, and his power and vitality increase thereby, and the music of his life grows more in harmony. Hazrat Inayat Khan "What can you do when you carry scars not on your body, but within your soul? And what happens when those spiritual wounds exist not just in you, but in everyone in your family, community, and even beyond? Our Ancestors knew that healing comes in cycles and circles. One generation carries the pain so that the next can live and heal. One cannot live without the other, each is the other's hope, meaning & strength.” Gemma B. Benton, Then She Sang A Willow Song: Reclaiming Life and Power with the Ancestors “Poverty has long arms that reach through generations of people, leaving telltale bruise marks on its victims even after they are blessed enough to get out.” Julia K. Dinsmore, My Name Is Child of God...Not "Those People": A First Person Look at Poverty “If intergenerational trauma can alter DNA, why can’t intergenerational love?” Alicia Elliott, A Mind Spread Out on the Ground “Judith Hermann' study of trauma linked survivors of domestic violence, refugees and war veterans to the plight of communities living under tyrannical control. She noted the effects of self-medication in assisting dissociation from the feelings of past and present trauma, while also blocking the integration of experience required for healing, setting up conditions for inter-generational abuse and violence. Judy Atkinson also explored the process from an Aboriginal perspective in her work, Trauma Trails (2003). Survivor guilt, a victim mentality, anxiety disorders and depression are amongst the range of psychological disturbances that become masked by intoxication.” Joanne Watson, Palm Island: Through a Long Lens "Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!” Hunter S. Thompson

Thank you for sharing your story of your family. Speaking of what your late wife did for her family and what your late son did. Therapy can teach you a lot and of yourself. It just take that person to want to take that walk and help. I been through it and i have learned a lot of my trauma and so much. Sorry for your lost. I to lost my first born son in 2016 and i keep working through it. Your right we can be so mad but just don't know who to be upset with. But we live for them and honor them. Thank you again.

He’s right about family/community members protecting molesters, rapists, beaters and drug dealers. Growing up on the Rez and in a border town, native friends would tell me that they were sexually assaulted by their own family/relatives. Native children grew up in rural areas, not much interaction with the outside world…just like those religious cults/communities. Also when you go to healthcare facilities on the Rez, you see a lot of info on drugs, alcoholism, but you never see…victims rights and who to contact or how to get help if you’re being molested by your parents or family members… I don’t think there are programs designed for victims of sexual abuse, molestation, assault, etc.

Agreed on all points but we also found out through other conversations with Non-Native communities is treating alcoholism / abuse / rape is considered a taboo and not talked enough about. We hope that these public videos help more families open the conversation and start addressing these issues. We are currently trying to find specialist in the IHS program to speak about possible programs in place and share statistics. Ahe' hee for watching and supporting our channel! 🤙🏾
