"This was my first lead... and this was the time I started to get nervous." Joe Cermak, Cerm's older brother, hops aboard the Train once again to celebrate and unpack his CDGA MidAm Championship. We discuss how to overcome nerves, how to win with your B game, how to think about match vs. stroke play, how course management plays a factor, what to do down the stretch when it means the most, and so much more. If you want to hear the drama of winning a high level amateur event while also learning things that can help you lower your handicap, this episode is for you.

Be great to ask Cermack or you or your future guests what they think about "talking to your playing partners" during serious events. In those events, everyone is trying to beat you. In the college matches that I have played in, I always enjoyed talking to and getting to know the players in my group; not quite a full Trevino but I was a chatter box. That can throw your opponent off. I wasn't trying to do that to them on purpose - but it made me feel more relaxed. The higher the importance, the less responding (ha) I generally got back. Keep in mind too, if you are only playing with your buddies, talking is a constant. Silence is another aspect of tournament play to deal with and to get used to. In college, there are no caddies and coaches made me over think. I would tell them stay away or keep it short. Always enjoy the POD!

Cerm here - I think forms of gamesmanship are always fascinating to talk about in matchplay. You are a dead on about finding a way to relax in tournament play between shots and the only way can be through talking. Especially early in the round where it isn't unnatural to talk to your playing competitors - ask questions, learn about each other, etc. Helps ease the nerves early!
