Hello, friends!
Thank you so much for being here 💛 I purposefully keep my videos mostly light-hearted but I do always make an effort to be honest with you all about how I'm feeling and what I'm going through. This winter has been extremely difficult for many of us in so many ways... I've felt very lost and super insecure.
I let myself become OBSESSED with numbers-- subscriber count, views, likes, dislikes, comments, etc. I've become rather addicted to checking the "status/progress" of literally every single thing I've shared on social media and it's had a toxic impact on my overall opinion of my self and mental health.
This behavior has to stop. And so, I'm making an active effort to redefine what success means to me and to be mindful of where I find validation. I've always begun to repeatedly tell myself "I am not defined by numbers" anytime self-doubt starts to creep in.
I'm SO immensely grateful for this community-- each of you has been like a sunbeam in this dark foggy time ⛅️ We're all doing our best given the circumstances and that is more than enough 💛
The BIGGEST hug,
Morgan

Morgan, I appreciate your transparency about finances and feelings of external validation. As a viewer, i love being able to see you succeed, but it keeps be grounded that you are honest about what you are going through. I am also someone who needs external validation, and I’ve come to realize that over the last year. Knowing this part about me has actually made it easier to feel better when I don’t feel that sense of external validation because I recognize why I am feeling off. As always, you are a breathe of fresh air and calm in all of our lives! ✨

i’ve been feeling the hole in my life that comes from not having your weekly videos (which is absolutely understandable and completely okay of course - its life!) and so i went through your videos from a year ago and selected this one! WOW! this is confirmation that your videos are TIMELESS! its like re-reading a favourite book or re-watching your comfort show/movie! I always have had a lot of gratitude for your videos and have been keenly aware of just how special they are, but i guess sometimes it takes some time away to appreciate things even deeper than before! As I watched this a year later, i newly appreciated so many things! the small details, the quality, the music, the comforting way you spend you days, and your honest talks of struggles (which are super interesting to hear retrospectively). All of this is just to say THANK YOU! thank you for making these videos which mean so much, and will continue to mean so much to viewers, old and new! you have brightened my day and filled me with comfort and warmth and wonder 💕✨❄️☀️

I'm so relieved the tears at the end were happy tears! This week I almost failed an exam because I convinced myself I couldn't answer the question. My lovely boyfriend told me I was being silly and that it was better to hand in something bad than nothing at all. In the end I pushed through and handed in something I was proud of, but I almost failed because I was scared of failing, which is ridiculous... It's so easy to put all of your self-worth into what grades you get and in academia it is practically all that matters, but this video reminded me how important it is to see yourself as more than one thing and to value different things about yourself. Thank you!
@CrisOnTheInternet
@CrisOnTheInternet 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, also a bad grade doesn't mean you reproved a course, for instance I was taking a two-month Statistics course and I did great on the first examen then I failed the second and did great again in the final one, if I were so down because the second one went so bad I probably would fail the whole course, but instead I made a big effort and succeeded. Don't let that a bad result makes you give up, you can always work harder and go through it.
@MorganLong
@MorganLong 3 жыл бұрын
Ah! It's ridiculous how all-consuming the fear of failing can be. I relate sooo much to this story Elli-- I'm really glad you were able to overcome the fear and I hope it gets easier and easier as time goes on. Grades do not define your worth or determine how successful you will be in life. You are the kind of person who lives with your whole heart, there is simply no way you can fail ❤️

Oh Morgan 😭 I had 80k on Instagram in 2014 making plenty then it started to decline for algorithm reasons and I let this get to me so much that I ended up quitting social media and going back to full time 9-5(I’m a pharmacist). I remember just constantly thinking honestly that suddenly people hated me. It was so bad for my mental health. I just recently started again on KZfaq promising myself it was only doing what I love which is content creation. Just know that you honestly have changed my life with your content (dramatic I know lol) but your peaceful spirit and your “wonderous” self is making such a difference. I hope the finances continue to uptick and line up. I know how hard mentally but also freakin stressful that can be! **WILL WATCH ADS START TO FINISH TO GET YOU THAT COIN GIRL**

This vlog was so real. You touched topics that not many people like to talk about because their fear of being judged, at least I fear being judged whenever I mention not feeling like I'm good enough, like I'm not doing enough. Specially now during a pandemic, a lot of people are at home all day everyday and it doesn't matter the motivation you have at the beginning, bad thoughts and feelings will get to you because like you mentioned, there's no one to praise you and tell you how good you're doing. But let me tell you Morgan, you're doing amazing! You've accomplished so much since you started KZfaq and being brave enough to do videos and art full time and successfully is already great but also you enjoy doing it and you're oh so good at it, and those videos make people feel better and that's why they subscribe and like and comment and that why Cheyenne subscribe too! Both of you inspire me so much, and I'm so happy she found your channel ✨ I'm so glad those were happy tears haha But let me say it again, and louder YOU ARE DOING AMAZING! That's the end of my rant 😁 I hope you're having a wonderful day x

Morgan, you are worth so much more than your quantitative growth as an algorithm on KZfaq and I admire how you know yourself enough to stop yourself from stretching out too thin especially when trends like TikTok make you feel like you /HAVE/ to adapt to keep up. I LOVE your corner of the internet because it's so you and it's yours. I totally understand what you mean about finding purpose and validation outside of work/school. It used to be 50 or 60 years ago, people were more connected to their local communities through church and civic clubs. Now, I’m not religious at all and you won’t find me in a church service, but I do miss doing service projects. Civic clubs aren’t really much of a thing for younger people these days. I think finding a place to volunteer and connect would be a great benefit to many of us for finding purpose and community. I keep trying to move from connecting with people online to connecting with people in person, but with the pandemic isn’t even harder than ever.

Hola Morgan!!! It is vital that when we have a problem or other obstacles-to either resolve it or learn to cope with it, especially if it is out of our control. Being productive, doing fun things will overcome any problems that we are facing. As I mentioned before, I read, meditate, exercise and do my yoga everyday. Also, I watch your positive videos in order for me to be uplifted and simply be positive throughout the day. Any time you feel blue, you have Landon and Mr.Roo to give you that emotional support that you need. We are always going to have obstacles in life, but the goal is to remain positive The mind is a powerful tool. The purpose is to channel all the positive energies and to observe the negative ones, but the key is to be aware of the negative ones and just let it go. In other words, don't react to the negative energies. Those bad thought will go away. Once the pandemic is over, I will attend a Vipassana Meditation Center for two straight weeks where you are away from social media, phones and not having contact with the people around you. It cleanses your mind and body. Everyone should try it. I have done it. It gets you away from all the distractions. You are provided with a room and offered free meals. All you have to do is donate whatever you can at the end of the program. For two weeks you just meditate. You will feel like a new person. In the meantime, just continue engaging in positive things and let go all the negativity. Remember, you have us to elicit these positive energies. We in the You Tube community will always be with you in spirit. Once again, I am proud that you are doing the things necessary to overcome these weeks of ups and down. Keep showing those videos. Take care, friend!

Thanks for being so upfront. I can't deal with vloggers who are nothing but positive all the time. That's not real life. Speaking of defining your life by numbers: I just applied to my 20th freelance job in three months, with no hits. It's discouraging, obviously. Now that many more people are at home, they are applying to jobs that we freelancers used to be able to get because we chose to work from home--or, as in my case, it was the only way we could get work in our chosen professions. I lost my last two clients when the pandemic hit, and I haven't had any work since. I have a very part-time job, but it's customer-facing and I'm anxious about being around people since the pandemic. Also, I will be helping out a family member come late summer and will need to work from home. Life stinks at times. Thanks for showing that--and for letting us know that there are as many ups as there are downs.

Hi Morgan!! :) I just recently discovered your channel this last week, and I just have to say - you are so sweet, inspiring and so very genuine. I love your honesty and realness. And your home is so warm, calm and cozy! Adore your vibe! :) I feel ya on the emotional ups and downs/loss of human connection this winter. For me, focusing on my core values and going within myself for answers (not looking outside of me for acceptance) is incredibly important to feel vital and joyful. Whenever I look outside of myself for love or acceptance, I feel instantly depleted of energy. I've gone through this with KZfaq and Patreon as well...it takes so much time and energy to create videos. (sigh) It's a process, a journey. I feel like all KZfaqrs go through these ups and downs. Take a rest if you need to. I took a few weeks off from creating this winter and it revitalized my spirits and creativity. In the end, the numbers don't matter. Years from now, we'll look back at this time and realize the numbers were never that important to the journey itself. The process of enjoying the work and having fun creating is what matters. :) But I feel ya on the money ups and downs...it's really frustrating at times. I'm sending you a warm hug and know that you are so fully supported!

Morgan, you made a point that some of my friends have been discussing recently about praise and how when we are young and in school we are told constantly we are doing a good job. I do this as a teacher, constantly telling my students they did great, but then we go out in to the working world and it is very rarely that we are praised. There is a normal human need for external validation and I don’t think that’s necessarily wrong. It’s nice to be told you are doing a great job, regardless your age or experience. And so, friend, you are doing a great job and I am so glad to be a part of your Patreon community. Keep doing what you are doing, you bring so much light to my life in this heavy year.

I fully understand the external validation thing. I don't often think I need validation from others, but when I really sit down and think about it, I do rely a LOT on what other people say. I'm always happy to see you succeed, and here's to only more success in the future. Cheers!

Hi Morgan! I just wanted to say that the way you love Cheyenne Barton's work is exactly how I feel about your work. Every single time I feel sad, I go to your channel and watch one of your videos. Also, some time ago, I was having an emotional burnout that lasted about 2 months and what got me to fight through that was you and your videos so I just want to tell you that you are what Cheyenne Barton is to you, to me. If that makes any sense :)

How beautiful (as always) to see your heart on screen. You are MY Chey Barton! You are who I'm looking to for how to mold my future channel. I love the way you film everything (especially the recipes with the hands coming from off screen and grabbing things). The self-worth thing is huge challenge for me as I am starting my own handmade business. I had to order boxes and packing materials last week after figuring out the sizes of all my items and maximizing shipping space, and the price tag really made me cringe. Not because I didn't think it was worth the money but because, "what if no one buys anything and I'm stuck with all these boxes??" And don't get me started on the emotional breakdown I had when figuring out my prices! Anyway, you always bring a sense of calm to my space and I look forward to having coffee with you every Saturday morning and catching up with you! ((HUGS))

Hello my dear, I don't know if you read each and every one of your messages. But I just want to say what my mom use to tell me. You got to love yourself first, then anyone else. You give your all 101%, but you can't please everyone. So don't be sad about it. There's days it goes well and then there's months it goes bad. But you got to keep your chin up high and do what your best. Never think of yourself that you're any less. You can't make everyone happy. As much as we try, we know that everyone appreciate things differently. For me you do a great job. Keep up the good work and be proud of yourself. 👍

I can really relate to receiving validation through external means. I have been having a difficult time lately with feeling successful in my work. At the end of the day I am usually rethinking everything I said and did and wishing I could go back and change things. This is not healthy or helpful. All you can do is try your best and find small ways to improve. Your video helped me feel better about my day today and I just want to say thank you. I appreciate you so much! Hope you are doing well!

Thank YOU, friend ❤️ I can’t stand the feeling of constantly second guessing myself, or rather, I can’t stand being in a situation where I don’t have much support or feedback so I’m constantly second guessing myself. I see so much of myself in you as well! I am a major perfectionist that graduated last year valedictorian from a good college. I miss the praise, I miss the ability to tie my worth to how well I can perform. I am learning to find my worth in far more but it is a daily struggle! Working a job I find no meaning in where I don’t feel valued has not helped. I see you and hear you and feel where you’re coming from! There is a reason I instantly will click on your videos on Fridays. Your area is a place I find peace and understanding and is almost like solace to just feel heard.

Hey Morgan, I have paused to comment on your midnight reverie as I have a few things to say that might help x firstly yay for the realisation, that's fabulous! And what you said about receiving validation just for being a good human was so true. I thought of two quotes as you were talking - the classic "comparison is the thief of joy", but also I heard iyanla vanzant say that "comparing yourself to others is an act of violence against yourself". That was very powerful to me. Big magic will help, I'm sure. I'd really also recommend 2 episodes of Oprah's super soul podcast. The first is called your own truth - this is so wonderful that I relisten regularly. It's a speech she gives, and it's phenomenal. The second is called you matter (still super soul, with iyanla vanzant). They are just wonderful for me. Liz Gilbert is also on there discussing big magic and the hero's quest, another great one. I love to share things that help me through hard times and self doubt. Lots of love xx

Morgan this is coming at the perfect time for me!! I am also struggling with this. Especially with imposter syndrome. I just got a few new contracting jobs as a video maker!! But I feel like every second I am faking it till I make it. And I feel like one wrong move can make it all vanish. I am so excited, but also all of my self worth is relying on these gigs. I find that if I ever have an awkward moment or have to ask a question I am completely a mess on the inside. I believe in you! I see you. You are absolutely one of my favorite creators! We can do this.

I am SO FAMILIAR with these feelings! It gets easier but it’s always there. It’s especially difficult when people have a vision of the type of video they want but they have no idea how much work it will actually take and the supplies/equipment it requires. Really though, you know your stuff and everyone else is faking it until they make it as well. There’s a reason you were hired for these gigs- you absolutely have what it takes, Diana. Whenever you’re unsure, just ask yourself what YOU want to do and inspiration will come 💛

you know, i much prefer smaller independant artists & people. it’s so true that everyone wants more and more followers/likes, but i find that sometimes being too big is where you loose me because you loose the intamacy, or maybe more the closeness with the community you bily. we became just numbers... i love everything you do so continue sharing your journey with so much lightness, love and creativity✨ Plus, it’s so true that i define myself with numbers, especially with school. I’m use to having good grades, and when i’d get one a bit less better (again with my high standard it can’t still be pretty good but not for me) i’d feel so sad and my confidence would drop... because of a number!!! i am too slowly trying to get over what years and years of programming have done to me... i feel the struggle💛

Oh, I am the exact same way needing external validation in my work. It’s really hard being a creative. When I started taking on photography clients I constantly judged my work + compared it to others (and still do.) And when you add receiving money into the mix it can really hurt your soul AND creativity. Whenever I feel low + unworthy I try to reconnect with my why + create something just for me, and no one else. Starting a YT channel has helped me find a creative outlet outside my business!

Your transparency and rawness is greatly appreciated! Congrats on the 40.000 subscribers! ✨ As a child who showed early signs of academic success, your talk about external validation hit hard and really made me stop to think. I've been struggling in university with all the assignments, tests, exams, online courses etc. and feeling really disappointed in myself for not getting high grades and amazing feedback on my assignments. I've realized that I am studying for my self and my own future, and as long as I pass my classes and get my degree, I've succeeded. I've also found that really structuring my day and creating a "closing time" (In danish we call it "fyraften") for my uni work has helped me separate my life and appreciate my off-time so much more. Have a great weekend ☀️🧡

Oh gosh, you don't even know how much this hits home. It is such a horrible feeling to feel like you've put your heart and soul into something you're proud of and then you put it out into the world and it feels as though no one else thinks so. My shop had hit a stand still after Christmas and for the past couple months its been a very discouraging quiet and then to top it off I launched the biggest shop update I've ever done (so much time and financial investment) and then flop. Hardly any interest at all and it is SO hard to not feel like a failure. But you are so so right that we cannot depend on numbers and likes and shares and views to tell us our worth or our success. Life is always going to ebb and flow, and that truly is the beauty of it, so we can learn to appreciate and be grateful for all we have and for what is most important in our lives; our family, friends, love, joy... I need to go listen to that podcast now and have a real sit down with myself to figure out how I might find success and value and worth from within & not be controlled by what I can't control! As always, thank you so much for being so vulnerable and honest, it always makes me feel so much less alone on this creative journey. Hugs, Randi

I feel you SO much, Randi!! The products you create are so so so beautiful and I know that once you have your audience, your shop will thrive! I'm not sure if it helps at all...I know that it looks like everything I've done is a success (and with my new definition, it most certainly is) buuut Vlogmas was a total flop for me and I've been literally getting NEGATIVE subscribers. My channel has been growing slower than before I had 1000 subscribers! So I think the flop is bigger than us. Hang in there

Hello Morgan from Minnesota! I totally agree with you that me as a beginner KZfaqr, the numbers (number of subscribers, likes, dislikes) are really stressful and it affects my mood so much. I tell myself I shouldn’t be affected by people’s opinion of my videos but it is hard to keep thinking that way because I create videos for people to watch. I want people to enjoy the content of my videos. So it is very hard not to be affected. I enjoy introducing my cabin life and hopefully viewers enjoy watching it. I believe It is important to balance my enjoyment of self expression and feedback from viewers. All KZfaqrs go through this?
