Hi, everyone! I'm Stephen. I've been sick with flu-like symptoms for the past week. In this video, I talk about how I dealt with the flu and some of my worries about medication.
Overcoming the Flu while Managing Schizophrenia: A Personal Journey.
Today we will delve into a critical topic brought up by Stephen, a courageous individual who has been "Surviving Schizophrenia." In this video, Stephen gives us an intimate look into his life as he managed through the week-long flu, all while continuing to balance the complexities of his medication regimen for schizophrenia. He emphasizes the importance of monitoring medication interactions and the potential amplification of schizophrenia symptoms due to illness-related anxiety and sleep disruption.
Struggles with the Flu
Stephen begins his narrative by telling us about his recent bout with the flu, a common ailment that, for many, is a minor disruption in life. However, compounding with a mental health condition like schizophrenia, something as seemingly simple as the flu, can pose additional challenges. He spent a week feeling ill, contending with the typical flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, cough, and aches. In his video, Stephen navigates the difficulty of managing these symptoms alongside his long-term mental health condition.
The Medication Balancing Act
Living with schizophrenia often means maintaining a steady regimen of medications. In Stephen's case, he's been taking Clozapine and Abilify for the past 11 years. These medications, while essential for managing his schizophrenia symptoms, can interact negatively with over-the-counter remedies, complicating the process of treating acute illnesses like the flu.
Stephen underscores a valuable point when he reveals he can't take Sudafed, a common cold and flu remedy, due to the potential adverse effects of his antipsychotic medications. Instead, under his doctor's guidance, he takes Zyrtec to alleviate his flu symptoms. This speaks volumes about the importance of understanding how various medicines interact and ensuring that even common over-the-counter drugs are safe to use.
The Flu, Sleep, Anxiety, and Schizophrenia
Having the flu isn't just about dealing with physical discomfort-it can also disrupt sleep and cause heightened anxiety. These factors are particularly concerning for Stephen as they can exacerbate his schizophrenia symptoms.
Sleep plays a vital role in everyone's health and well-being, and a lack of quality sleep can lead to various health issues. In Stephen's case, interrupted sleep caused by the flu could lead to increased schizophrenia symptoms, making managing his condition even more challenging.
Additionally, anxiety-whether due to the illness itself or a byproduct of sleep deprivation-can also worsen schizophrenia symptoms. Stephen's experience managing his anxiety levels during his illness provides an enlightening example of the layers of complexity that individuals with mental health conditions often face when dealing with physical ailments.
Finding the Silver Lining
Despite the challenges, Stephen's video ends on a positive note. He tells us he's feeling better now, demonstrating his resilience in a challenging situation. It's inspiring to see Stephen navigate this complicated physical and mental health interaction with grace and openness.
Key Takeaways
Stephen's story offers invaluable insights for those managing complex health scenarios, particularly where mental and physical health intersect. The importance of understanding medication interactions cannot be overstated-always consult with your healthcare provider before adding or changing any medications, whether prescription or over-the-counter.
Secondly, this narrative reminds us to stay aware of the impact physical illness, sleep disruption, and anxiety can have on mental health conditions. Ensuring adequate sleep and managing anxiety levels are vital to coping with any health condition.
Finally, Stephen's resilience and his commitment to sharing his experiences serve as an inspiration to all those facing similar situations. His openness about his journey aids in destigmatizing mental health discussions, a significant step towards a more empathetic and understanding society.
Stay strong, stay informed, and remember-you're not alone in your journey. Till next time, readers. Be well, and remember to care for your physical and mental health. Stephen.

Bless you. I have schizoaffective disorder. The flu makes me feel very strange and disassociated from reality. Gardening helps my illness, Stephen...and playing guitar. I also enjoy feeding birds and taking pictures of them with trail cams. If I want to watch them with binoculars I set up a driveway alarm to alert me when they arrive. Metal detecting helps too.

I had Covid 3 weeks ago. It was like the flu. However, between the lack of sleep, cold medicine and stress, I went into a mild psychosis. I almost went to the hospital! So glad you are feeling better and thank you for your videos ✨⭐️✨

Chronic stress can suppress the body’s immune system making it more vulnerable to other illnesses including the Flu. As long as stress remains elevated, the body can struggle with health issues causing flu like symptoms.Try to deal with the stress first practicing relaxed breathing, increasing your rest, relaxation and these Flu like symptoms gradually will completely subside. Great video! Thanks for sharing it with us Stephen!👋

Any extreme stress on the body can also put stress on the mind. Be very careful with yourself if you have the psychotic episodes related to your schizophical disorder. Whenever you're sick just relax spend plenty of time getting plenty of rest and avoid overstressing yourself. God bless you and I hope you get better soon

I cannot take Sudafed or other medications. It makes my body react in some strange way. Keep going young man cause you’re doing great!

Hi Stephen. First, thank-you for doing this excellent KZfaq channel! Your talents are perfect for this, and you are providing invaluable help for people, families, and friends to better understand and cope with sz-affective challenges. My family faces many challenge from this illness, so I love what you are doing here. Question: Has anyone ever found any correlation between sz and asthma? A family member is severely affected by both conditions, causing me to wonder whether there are any known correlations?

I have severe depression and anxiety and when I get sick omg! Having depression makes it feel way worse than before when I didn't have anxiety and depression. I get way weaker and more depressed. It feels as if being sick makes my medication not work properly for me 😢

I do not have schiz. But I do remember when I was 5 years old I had a fever and I was hallucinating terrible things, scary people, the walls were moving and breathing while my mother & sibling were trying to force me to take medicine and the hallucination were are real as the hallucinations. I imagine this to be like what schiz. must be like. Even decades later I remember those hallucinations and how scary they were. About every 10 years if I DO have a fever from the flu ill have vivid flashbacks of that.

Hello Stephen, I happened to see your channel today. Sent a message to a video you made a year ago. You can be proud of how you are managing and documenting your experiences living with schizophrenia. Have you looked at recent research on the connection of the microbiome and schizophrenia? Check out ZOE studie being done in USA and Britain. Perhaps they have some useful information for you. Best of luck in your personal journey. Greetings and warm regards Dagmar in Haarlem Netherlands
