Guitar distortion pedals are like the secret sauce of rock and roll, metal, and various other music genres. They take your clean guitar signal and, well, "distort" it, adding grit, warmth, and that quintessential growl that can turn a simple chord progression into a powerful riff. If you're new to the guitar world, diving into the vast sea of distortion pedals can be as thrilling as it is bewildering. So, let's break it down in a way that won't make your head spin.
First things first: what exactly is a distortion pedal? Imagine you're singing softly into a microphone, and then suddenly, you start screaming. The microphone can't handle the intensity, so your voice comes out all gritty and, yes, distorted. A distortion pedal does something similar to your guitar signal - it amplifies it beyond its normal limits, creating a thick, powerful sound.
But why can't you just crank up the volume on your amp for the same effect? Well, you can, but distortion pedals offer a variety of flavors and control that your amp alone might not provide. Plus, they allow you to keep your volume at neighbor-friendly levels while still getting that meaty sound.
Now, when you're standing in front of a wall of pedals at your local music store or scrolling through pages of options online, you might notice terms like "overdrive," "distortion," and "fuzz." They're all relatives in the big, happy family of "make my guitar sound awesome," but they have different personalities. Overdrive simulates the sound of an amp cranked to 11 (without actually having to do so), giving you a warm, natural distortion. Fuzz takes it a step further, giving your signal a woolly, sputtering character. Distortion, the one we're focusing on, sits somewhere in the middle, offering a more aggressive and sustained growl.
So, how do you choose your first pedal? Think about the music you love and the guitar tones that give you chills. Different pedals cater to different genres, so whether you're into the smooth bluesy solos of B.B. King or the face-melting riffs of Metallica, there's a pedal out there with your name on it.
Most beginner-friendly distortion pedals will have at least three knobs: Volume (how loud the effect is), Tone (the color of the sound, from dark and muddy to bright and sharp), and Distortion (the amount of, well, distortion). Playing around with these settings will give you a feel for how the pedal can shape your sound.
One piece of advice: start simple. You don't need a pedalboard the size of a small country to find your sound. A single, well-chosen distortion like the BBE Sound Green Screamer Distortion pedal can provide endless fun and inspiration.
Finally, remember that the "best" pedal is the one that sounds right to you. Trust your ears, and don't be afraid to experiment. The world of guitar pedals is all about exploration and finding your unique voice. So plug in, crank it up, and let the distortion do its magic. Welcome to the club - your guitar is about to get a whole lot louder.

Great review, currently considering this pedal. I also have a G&L Fullerton Legacy in that exact same color. Had some questions and comments. 1) 3:45 are you playing minor pentatonic in B? 2) G&L Strap lock buttons are small detail that I think exceeds the standard strap button. I left them instead of the locking ones. 3) Do you think a G&L Legacy gets that Strat nasal sound closer with a Fender-type clean amp? I'm using a Marshall Origin 20c and although it works, I was reconsidering switching for an Orange.
