Here's another song for this Texas artist. The reference is Morgan Wallen. Any time I hear that as a reference, I just think, "make it sound like country radio." That can carry some negative connotations for people, but honestly, there is a lot of great music on country radio. My favorite quote regarding music in Nashville is from one of my favorite songwriters, Lori McKenna: "There's a lot of great food in this town. No one is forcing you to eat at McDonald's." Well said!
Check her records out. You might even find some of yours truly's guitar playing.

There's that Reverend . . . sweet. I watch these longer videos intently to try to absorb the process and the creativity of making those parts. [and by "creativity" I think I mean your rhythmic and intervallic choices . . . you are teaching me to "unlock the fretboard" even if you don't intend to. :) ]

Love that you show the actual process - the constant tuning, the re-tracking, the process of developing your ideas as you go. A pro at work

I love watching the comparisons between how you Nashville guys track guitar to say the LA cats. It's really insightful!

Thanks for your generosity in sharing your craft man. It gives a greater depth to the beauty that you’re creating. That 335 tells a beautiful story.

Watching you tune makes me realize I could be going about tuning wrong. I would like to see a short video on how a pro tunes!

Hi working musician/ guitar player/teacher from Montreal here. I find your workflow very interesting. I don't usually use a click unless drums are not present...I'm assuming you do it to keep on top of the beat. I don't usually put so many layers of guitar parts, but I think I may experiment. Your a fine player Justin.

If you would have played ”the move” on the baritone going into the 6 (after the alternate 3rd run on the melody) ALL the stars would have aligned!

I hear you. Sometimes doubling or tripling up on the move gets to be a little too heavy handed or “plodding” as we say…

Thanks for all the cool posts! The tone on the 335 in this track was legit! I have a Strymon Blue Sky on my job out board and I have just been "so so " with it. I have an RV-6 here too I could throw on it but I was curious to know if you are using the Mercury 7 on most of your tracks because the verb you are getting is beautiful!

The baritone sounds great Justin! On the rhythm chords it seems like you are playing in the same zone as the bass. Are producers "not concerned" about this pancaking of sound? I mean, if it was vocal that you were stepping on, they might go bananas.
@JustinOstrander
@JustinOstrander Жыл бұрын
They would go bananas, and rightly so. But I'm not stepping on the bass. I don't mind being down in the baritone range at all as long as things aren't competing (e.g., playing different lines between chords). I'm just playing simple chords here with a bright cutting tone on the choruses. The final mix will definitely sound very different without my parts way out front like they are in this video!
