A lot of beginner beach volleyball players resort to underhand serving simply because they do not yet know how to overhand serve over the net consistently. In this video I go over 4 simple tips that tend to help players to get a consistent overhand serve. Over time, these basics can then be advanced further into powerful float serves as well as topspin serves.
----------------------------------
For people that need more than these 4 tips to learn a consistent overhand serve:
Usually the people that do not find the power to overhand serve the ball over the net, aren't finding the way to get power from your core to the ball. The one cue about the core that I talked about in the video helps enough for some players to make this connection, while some players unfortunately need even more guidance on how to find this. I have planned to make more videos about this in the future, but until they are done, here are two routes you can go to continue your discovery journey:
First watch this one minute video about the "torque serve" ( • USAV Skill Video Torqu... ). Notice that this is basically an underhand serve where the angle is more to the side rather than straight down. This type of serve often makes it more intutive for players to get power from their core rather than their shoulder, you want to "catapult your arm" into the ball with the help of your body, rather than "push your arm" into the ball with the help of your shoulder muscles. Go watch the above video again, notice that the girl with the headband gets more power to the ball than the other girl, and she is "torqueing" her upper body to create momentum into the arm rather than keeping the body still and swinging the arm with the shoulder like the other girl. You want to do it like the girl with the white headband. Once you have found the way to do it like the girl in the white head band, you can slowly start doing the serve "higher and higher" until you basically in the end end up doing and overhand serve. So just as we could find a lot of techniques "in between" the underhand serve and how the torque serve is done in this video, we can similarly find techniques in between the torque serve and an overhand serve, meaning in the end we can serve with the arm in all positions in a 180 degree "half circle" - all the way from underhand serving, to torque serving, to overhand serving.
Hope this helps. If it doesn't, and you are desperate for answers, the second option I can provide is of course coaching. You can find more info about that at www.learnbeachvolleyballfast.com/coaching Or you can of course always wait until I one day make more videos on this topic! :)
