Taking apart a Honda R18 engine that was badly overheated to see if I can find why it wouldn't run. Blog: www.MechanicalMalarkey.com Facebook: / mechanicalmalarkey Twitter: / mech_malarkey Instagram: / mechanicalmalarkey

It wouldn’t start because the coils were melted in the block, could of repaired all that and the engine would of ran just fine, it’s a Honda after all.

Mine has a lil bit melted in cylinder 2 and the engine won’t start at all think that would help? 😂

Pre-2011 R18 engines are pretty fragile and, have been known to crack in seems close to coolant ports.

Any tips on keeping it going?
@patm958 ай бұрын
@@PiLLO360 just recommended maintenance. I use mobile 1, change when maintenance minder says. Use Honda ATF fluid and change every 25k miles. I’ve only replaced alternator and AC compressor.

For those that don't know the Honda R18 is very similar to the Honda d series engines except it doesn't have performance VTEC on the camshaft the Honda R18 engine or the Honda R Series engines performance VTEC is in the intake manifold past 5,000 RPM a flap in the intake manifold will open up so that it uses a shorter intake runner

Usually the head has slight warp but ive also had the cylinder liners slightly sink/drop/shrink below the deck surface making decking the block necessary

I worked at a Honda dealership for 14 years, and ran the parts dept for 12 of those years. There was a defect in the block casting of early ('06 and I believe some '07) Civic R18s that caused the block to crack on the back side, towards the firewall. This caused a coolant leak, and engine overheating. If you look on the side of the block, you may be able to see the crack. We replaced TONS of these blocks under warranty. Other than those blocks, it is a very reliable engine. It doesn't have the potential for mods like the B or K series engines, but it's perfectly adequate for a daily driver.

Yeah, that's the only common problem I've seen that wasn't from neglect.

The coolant passages were known to break. Honda has technical bulletins related to the r18. Its a known issue on the earlier models

enjoyed that Im old but new to dismantling engines. Wish you would get into the habit of treating all parts as if they were going back onto the car good habit to get into even when you know something is toasted. Otherwise very enjoyable

This engine might be okay to run, new rebuild but these suffer with head gasket failures a lot

19426-RNA-A01 is the stamped steel gasket between the heater outlet and the head?, block? When it leaks it give the indication of a blown head gasket resulting in a broken/ split radiator. My gasket imprinted itself in the poor outlet casting. I filled the impression and pits with JB Weld and sanded it on glass. Worked fine after that…..but first a new radiator or 3 and every other coolant part replaced…. It was the last part of the coolant system I checked.

I once bought one of these a few years ago it was a 2007 Honda Civic and it was not overheating at first cuz I bought it in spring but during the summer it kept on creeping up there was a crack in the block and I replaced the engine after I replaced the engine a disassembled the old engine and found that there was remnants of an old dipstick in the oil pan these motherfuckers that sold me this car knew it had overheated did not tell me and also replaced the dipstick so that I wouldn't be able to tell

The most likely reason it wouldn't start is that excessive heat warped the cylinder head, possibly also the block. Skimming the head would probably have gotten that engine running again. The soot on the pistons is normal, pistons tend not to melt, the gasket usually goes followed by the head warping. This guy seemed to be enthusiastic but the things he said would discourage me from having him fix my car 🤣.

One of Honda's best engines lol. I've owned all kinds of Hondas and this thing is a hot pile of garbage. About a year after buying my Civic I get a letter from Honda saying that my R18 engine block can crack it anytime! Plus it's a gutless turd.
@514aam Жыл бұрын
It's a Civic, it's meant to be economical not fast. Even like that 145hp from a 1.8 NA engine In 2006 is impressive. Also, the thing gets 40+ mpg if you know how to drive it.
@theejoeylee Жыл бұрын
@@514aam I can Average 42-44 MPG via Torque app, and calculating at the pump. The HP#s don't tell the whole story. It's the power curve, and this engine is peaky & low torque compared to other 4 cylinder engines. Even worse on a hot day. You need a big gap compared to modern cars to merge into traffic, They get impatient and start honking at you because you haven't pulled out because your car is slow as hell
@514aam Жыл бұрын
@@theejoeylee haven't had that problem on the R18 to be honest, the thing gets up to speed nicely, it's not a fast car at all, but enough for daily driving
