JUST back from the 8,650 mile overland off road adventure through 22 states around the USA - this is what worked and what didn’t.
This rig started out as a 2017 Can-Am Maverick X3 X RS Max on it's first few overland trips - got left at CT Raceworx outside Charlotte, North Carolina last year for a TOTAL rebuild making it into what I THINK is the ultimate adventure vehicle that can go ANYWHERE on OR off road.
She got a new 2020 chassis, had the power-coat burned off, gussets welded in, RE-powder-coated in desert tan and had a new cage added, which reinforced the upper rear shock mounting brackets.
Roof rack got extended for added capacity and lights and tool mounts added all the way around it.
Since the trip in the video, she's gotten a few extras like belt changing and oil swapping kits mounted to the cage, and a couple LIGHTWEIGHT (1/2 pound) fire extinguishers.
And onboard are PLENTY of spare parts - spare knuckles for all four corners, with bearings already pressed in, spare hubs with brake rotors and lug bolts pressed in, and LOTS spare bolts and nuts along with a host of other parts that MAY or may not be needed.
Where the rear seats used to be is a tool box fitted to bolt into the seat mounts, which carries all the tools and jacks necessary to strip the car down and put it back together again.
For communications, its' got Rugged Radios for car-to-car in case somebody wants to come along (ALL are welcome to RIDE), a Garmin InReach mounted to the cage, which connects to the iPhone via Bluetooth for satellite texting, a SPOT GPS beacon, which throws out the location of the rig every 30 minutes or so, and an ACR emergency beacon for a backup.
She's COMPLETELY street legal and gets me and hounds around MOST of the country with speed, comfort, AND style.
it's got 15' Fuel 6+1 offset wheels with 31" BFG KO2 All-Terrain Tires, an OEM electronic flip up windshield, Baja Designs Lights, PLENTY of spare fuel and water, a shovel, high lift jack and a hydraulic jack with jack stands, tools,
What it DOESN'T have is a BOOMING stereo OR a cooler.

Hey Al, I use the iPad Pro also in my set up, suggestion for you is to use a anti glare screen protector. Made all the difference when running in bright sunlight.

So bloody cool. Exactly what I want to do! I’ll look below but was that a wheel bearing failure? Other than belts, what else broke. I’d love to hear the lessons you learned getting stuck in the snow. And the other tow ditch?
@alroden6802
@alroden6802 6 ай бұрын
Sorry for the late reply…AXLES…that’s the only other thing besides wheel bearings that broke on mine. The other X3 went through two transmissions/gearboxes, but that was kinda unusual. That slowed us down a few days. Main lesson I learned about snow…is to AVOID snow. I can make it through some short areas of snow with some momentum, but eventually it’s gonna be sitting on the skid plate.

Great setup, really instered in the shotgun holder in the cab and rifle holder on top. What brands are they and do they use separate mounts? What brands are the mounts? Thank you in advance.
@alroden6802
@alroden6802 6 ай бұрын
The shotgun rack inside the cab is a Big Sky law enforcement rack (bigskyracks.com) - it’s just mounted to the cross tubing behind the front seats. And the rifle rack on the outside is just a Kolpin case and it came with the mounting bracket, which mounts with two bolts…had to have a bit of fabrication done to the roof rack to receive the bolts.

What toolbox did you use for the rear? Did you delete the rear seats with a rear seat delete kit or just complete removal.
@alroden6802
@alroden6802 Жыл бұрын
Yep, removed the rear seats and put in a lightweight truck tool box from Home Depot…the tool box got cut and welded to fit over the driveshaft tunnel and mounts were added so it attached to the original seat brackets. Added outdoor carpet to the top so the dogs could grip better.

CT Raceworx built that for me when they did the chassis swap - it’s nice having it up there where it stays high and dry. Think I would still prefer the Switch-Pro down low though - at least to turn the light bars on an off.

What’s the model of gps that you use to connect to your phone and text?
@alroden6802
@alroden6802 Жыл бұрын
That’s a Garmin InReach - connects via Bluetooth for texting any number in the phone contacts…there’s a lag between sending and receiving…up to a minute or two, but it comes in MIGHTY handy.

@@alroden6802 I will look for it 😉 I have a 2020 rr I have been building very similar setup to you except I have 3 kids in the back, got the bump seat for my 3 year old. We did a 20 state run last year, and hit Glacier National Park. It was amazing, we load and move instead of driving it all over we have trucks and trailers, it's a must with a family of 5. But I love your channel and totally admire what you do bro. Keep it up. Cheers Michael

Stupid question coming from a not tech savvy person.... What gps app do you use? I haven't found anything useful. Awesome content, Subscribed!
@alroden6802
@alroden6802 2 жыл бұрын
I use the GAIA GPS app for following the created route(s) - to create routes, I’ll import from sources like the Trans America Trail website or one of the MANY BDR (Backcountry Discovery Route) sites. Then use both Gaia and Google maps to connect em all and find fuel and other resources along the way and adjust the planned route(s) as necessary. I’ll import the route, in a GPX file, to and from Google Maps SEVERAL times to search for fuel stops and repair/service/parts sources. And when the route is all planned out and all the fuel, camping, hotel…spots are plotted and saved as waypoints, I’ll run the route in Gaia or the LeadNav app on my iPhone and IPad - good to have both…one zoomed in and one zoomed out for the big picture view to see upcoming turns and waypoints. Anyway, the GAIA GPS app IS useful, BUT only after DAYS of plotting, planning, exporting, and importing….

@@alroden6802 have you tried garmin stuff at all? I found GAIA to be a complete waste of time if wanting live guidance/tbt directions. Good for plotting routes but also a bit cumbersome there too. When I had it plugged into apple car play i kept driving off the screen and couldn't get the map to orient to my direction of travel. Pretty annoying.
@alroden6802
@alroden6802 2 жыл бұрын
@@dru24334 - GAIA gets REAL buggy and lags if you download lots of maps; works better without maps downloaded, but then all you have is a line to follow on a blank screen when there’s no cell service. Garmin Tread was too buggy too - wouldn’t take the GPX routes and display em correctly; impossible to navigate with it on long routes, but the group ride function is phenomenal…worth the cost just for that. LeadNav is my GO-TO app now for running routes - I’ll plot the routes in GAIA, then import em to LeadNav to run em….worked flawlessly so far…and I like the audio markers for turns and distances to fuel, ect.

@alroden6802
@alroden6802 Жыл бұрын
Yep..that’s loaded with me, hound dogs, fuel, and gear…it’s definitely HEAVY, but it made the trip several times, so… Some of the weight is in the cage, gussets and extra chassis braces that got welded in during the chassis swap. Spare parts weighed about 150 pounds or so…tools weighed 75 pounds, including jacks…

@alroden6802
@alroden6802 4 ай бұрын
It’s REALLY heavy - a LOT of the weight is in the chassis, cage, and suspension, but YEP, it definitely weighs more than it did when it was new. Still, the original chassis lasted just 7,000 miles or so before the chasing of cracks commenced - this chassis did 30,000+ miles carrying an extra 1,000 pounds before cracking, so I suppose that’s a significant improvement. The gearbox/transmission did 64,000 miles with zero issues - originally guessed that that might be the weak link, but I figured wrong 🤠.
