In my experience there’s more land out west, more trails but not to the degree some think. 60/40 I’d say. The terrain is the biggest difference. More water and mud on a regular basis here in the east. I’m from Memphis but grew up in NV and CA age 8-48. Just a few wheeling trips in the 90s out east while stationed at Norfolk. We’ve been in SC a year now and we love the green but still appreciate the desert and mountain landscapes out west. Mind you I’ve only been doing mild trails in a 2wd Ram while doing some way overdue work on my old Ramcharger. I look forward to doing some real trails once it’s done.

Many times the best overlanding is what you can get to in the amount of time you have. Although I'm retired, my wife would rather go out in our RV to a campground than to "Sleep in the back of and old Toyota". Given that, most of my trips are a week or less and tend to stay within a few hundred miles of home. Luckily, that includes western NC, North GA, East TN and the western portion of Va. As you guys well know, that includes some pretty nice National Forests. Nice video, I enjoyed the chat format.

@@CoddiwompleOverland Not to worry if you're driving or in your camp, you won't be bothering any hunter. If hiking in the woods, wear lots of hunter orange. Most moose hunters are "heater hunters". That is they drive the gravel roads looking for moose and sometimes stop and try to call one in. You do not want to kill a 1000# animal deep in the woods as it becomes very difficult to get it to your vehicle to take to a processor. The state of Maine puts out a foliage forecast in early September every Wednesday.

one of the best videos out there. the talk on the real gas usage. when you have a group going out need to plan for the one who has the least amount of gas mileage..gas stops are important. many have the tiny rotopacks. so you have to know what an extra 2 1/2 gal will get. smaller and lighter but the 5 gal jerry can is my choice leave home with no less than 10 gal extra fuel for me or somone else. middle of no where is no place to be out of fuel. down2mob experienced that played hard didnt have extra or watched fuel economy. keep going oh and more jk please.

That fact that you are able to "find ice" when talking about an overlanding trip in North America kind of cements the fact we're all just camping/roadtripping for as long as we can stand it with creature comforts bolted to our overloaded vehicles getting shit fuel mileage until we miss getting cheese burgers from drive thru windows. Never really more than an hour away from a fuel stop, lodging or cell service.

Having lived in Georgia almost my whole life and now a few years in Utah, and having done some overlanding in both, I love the opinion shared here. They both have their pros and cons and I love both sides. If I had to pick one side though, I prefer the west quite simply because of the plethora of public land. Even on crowded holiday weekends, I can always seem to find some peace and quiet not far from home. It took a lot more effort to find solitude in the east.

So we were thinking of going to the Natural Bridge area to try our luck at Overlanding. We have a 2010 Nissan frontier 4x4 that I’ve added skid plates too. With 32” MT Patagonia tires. You mostly hit it on the head East vs West is comparing apples to oranges. Both are incredible in there own way. The wide open western scenery and history is incredible but then again the lush green forest of the middle to eastern US is incredible too. It’s just a matter of what interest you. I like South Dakota and Wyoming because of the absence of people. The eastern states while beautiful and blessed with lots of cool history are jammed with way to many people. Even here in the Midwest I’m surrounded by corn fields and cows there’s starting to be too many people. I’m a fan of solitude. Thanks for sharing your travels and opinions with us . Peace ☮️

I've been overlanding for 25 plus years favoring dispersed camping spots. it's my experience that in the past two years after the main covid surge that people have sat around watching KZfaq videos and dreaming of travel and now it's hard to find dispersed spots. you will have better luck if you're carrying a small footprint IE no trailer, have four wheel drive and can get into tighter spots. have fun, enjoy the world and take your trash out with you.

The two of you have an amazing channel and I thoroughly enjoy it and thank you for all the hard work you put into producing such quality content. When I was much younger I did a lot of camping and four-wheeling in my home state of California. Back then we didn't call it over landing, it was camping in our Jeep! Things have come a long ways. I have lived in Tennessee for over a dozen years now, and I would agree with you that each region of the US has a different kind of beauty. I love how lush and green it is here, and how there is beauty at every turn in the road. I do miss the abundant availability of dispersed camping compared to the Western states, which was the only camping we ever really did. There is something about pulling out a map, finding a secluded Alpine lake and picking your route to get to a remote and gorgeous camping spots. I am much older now, and am living with a disability as a result of a stroke from a couple of years ago, so I get to live my adventures through you and your channel. I think that is one of the reasons I enjoy Coddiwomple so much. Thanks for taking me along!

My thoughts are people get too hung up on the dispersed portion. I totally get it that is the main goal for a lot of people but if you stay at a campground every now and then doesn't mean you aren't overlanding. I firmly believe traveling with your vehicle and camping from it is overlanding no matter where you are camping for the night. You hit on why overlanding can't just mean one thing, there are tons of areas where you can get off-road but there is no where to camp but in campgrounds. That is still overlanding because you are traveling "over land" to get from one place to another to stay the night camping. Staying in a structure is not overlanding, anything else is.

Great video. You have done some great camping, and amazing wheeling. You've boondocked in some diverse dispersed camping areas. What you are doing may be considered touring, but it is not overlanding. In the same way that a ballerina is a dancer, but not every dancer is no ballerina. Overlanding may look similar to that but it requires long term world travel. Overlanders leave their home countries and travel the world for long periods of time, like months or years. If you are not using a passport, and you don't need extra insurance, and the locals speak your language, and AAA can take your rig to your regular mechanic you are car camping. I don't mean to diminish the wicked cool stuff you are doing, but overlanding is the ultimate, extreme, MVP, marathon, pinnacle version of that. Like comparing rec hockey to the NHL All Star game. You are doing a better job then I am doing currently, but all you Americans need to stop miss using the term. You are watering it down! Think of it like running. I have a tread mill I hang clothes on. You just ran your first 3 mile race, and we meet Forest Gump in a crowd of professional runners at the water station where I am giving out water, after he ran the lower 48 states. If I claim to be an ultra marathoner that might not go over well in that crowd even if I am wearing the same sneakers as Forrest. It is not about thinking about it, or training for it, or gearing up for it, or planning to do it or practicing, or going to an event with the word is on a banner. To be an overlander you have to "have done it". Past tense! Traveled the world, outside your home country, self supported by vehicle. Until then we are all just campers with nice gear, practicing.
@markgriggs1808
@markgriggs1808 2 жыл бұрын
I think the term Overlanding has become more generic than its roots. To me it's the vehicle version of "Backpacking" as opposed to "Day Hiking". Just to mean you are not relying on anything outside of what you carry with you, for however long you are out, other than supplies. But I see what you mean in that a 3 day backpacker is not the same as someone that just spent months on a thru-Hike of the PCT or AP. But they are both still "backpacking".

@@markgriggs1808 again: pole dancer & ballerina, both are dancers, only one is a ballerina. A car camper, a truck camper, a boondocker, a van lifer, an RV'er, a weekend wheeler, a rock crawler, everyone at King of Hammers or Burning Man, and the Overlander are all campers. Only one is an overlander. The term used to be aspirational, now it's just asinine. Just because a small marketing company trademarked the word to get make commissions off of selling camping gear and confused 300 million people, doesn't change the real meaning. If your 2 year old calls a cow a dog, then she gets together with a thousand other confused 2 year olds on Facebook and starts a bunch of DOG Facebook pages, doesn't make your McDonald's burger, dog meat. Seriously. Stop.
