How do you account for the kerf of the blade? It seems to me that if the piece of wood clamped to the fence, that you use as a guide is the same thickness as the one in the final joint, your slot will bee one blade thickness too wide?

You're exactly right! I had two 1/16" spacers clamped to the fence in front of the 4x4 that worked perfectly. It took some trial and error to find how much I needed to make the gap correct.
