Thank you so much for this video. I was ready to send my new serger back and I used to sew on one for years, but also took a break for years. I have the Janome Pro 4DX and could not get the hang of the first thread. Once I saw your tip to push the one part back it was easy peasy. I finally was able to sew a seam, its a little puckered but I will work on that! It was just test fabric! Thank you thank you so much! :)

You are so welcome! I'm glad I could help in some way. The puckering might just be the differential feed needing adjustment. Different fabrics require different settings. x

Thank you!!! I watched your second overlocker video last night and learnt two things which will make all the diiference to my sewing life. One: I've been totally confused by all the advice on how to adjust the settings on my Janome 8002DX. I did what you said, 4 on loopers and needles.Perfect! Two: your nifty tying trick for the tails. Genious! 3: Just now I learnt how to avoid the loopy edge by moving the knife. I can't tell you how good it felt, sewing up my Freya sweater this afternoon. Thank you again!

Oh, my goodness. Your video was PERFECT. I just bought my Janome Pro 4X, and I couldn't wait to get going. Of course, I broke the number 2 thread within seconds. Yup, that's just my luck. BUT thanks to your video, which I had watched a few days before I made my purchase, I was able to re-thread my machine. I can tell you the first run I had made an error, I pulled all four threads out and started over. It really isn't that horrible at all. I thought to myself you invested in this machine. You better learn how to change the thread. Thank you so very much for your video and your guidance. I look forward to watching more of your videos.

Just a note, Some overlockers tell you to thread the upper looper first, then the lower looper. I have two (long story, I don't really need two!), a Singer 14SH754 and a Janome 6234xl like yours. My Singer says upper looper first and, as you know, the Janome says lower looper first. This may confuse some so I would say follow what the manual says. I love my Janome far more than the Singer though it does have a free arm but the lower looper is a so and so to thread. There was lots of swearing then. I haven't used either machine for a while so it is so good to have a refresher. Thankyou.
@Jessalli
@Jessalli 4 жыл бұрын
Yes thank you Maggie, I've played on a lot of overlockers (some without manuals) and in general I've found as long as you thread right to left, it's normally absolutely fine. But yes, always check the manual first. x

THANK YOU!!! I recently bought my Janome overlocker, and the thread it came with ran out, and I tried watching the video that came with the overlocker but I kept getting stuck at the end when rethreading the lower looper as it didn't clearly show what to do with the thread tail. You talking through that part just made it click for me. Also kind of weird that your sewing school is in the town I grew up in (though I live in Australia now!) so maybe I was meant to find your video :)

Hi Allison, I use mine on nearly every project. I use it to finish cushions, on all my clothes and dress making, even to finish edges on framed pieces. It's so useful. But you can get a similar effect by just using a straight stitch and then going over the raw edge with a zigzag stitch on your normal machine. The benefits of an overlocker are; it's more professional, it's super quick, and it cuts and finishes the raw edges for you. Downsides; it's not a good thing to unpick if you make a mistake and you need a lot of thread (although its cheap). Hope that helps!?

Thanks for posting this. I was given a Janome overlocker for Christmas and I've never once used it. Finally threaded it today but feel so intikidated by it. I just don't see how you use it. If it slways cuts as well as finishes, ot is cutting away part of your seam allowance, so how do you know where your sewing line would be? I finish all pieces before sewing to prevent fraying but I don't see how I can do this with an overlocker. I feel bad about not using it but it seems a bit of a pointless maschine to me. Also those straggly chains don't look tidy to me and defeat the purpose of finishing the edges. I don't know maybe I'll come to love it but not feeling the love yet.
@Jessalli
@Jessalli 4 жыл бұрын
If you're only using it to finish edges before sewing, don't cut anything off. I personally sew a seam, then use my overlocker to trim and finish it. I also use it to construct all stretch items. x

You showed everything except the parts that the 634d manual doesn't show: What do you do with the threads AFTER you put them thru their needle or other final hole? Are you supposed to lay them under the presser foot, from front to back, right to left, or what?

Really helpful video. Could I ask about needles. I have the model before (9300DX) the one you have, but it does use the same needles. However I am always unsure about whether I have the right needles in. Do you use (like a sewing machine) different sizes for different fabrics? Also I am never sure if I am purchasing the right needles. I think I have just got a phobia about overlocker needles and maybe I am over thinking it. Overlockers are such powerful machines! Not long after I got my overlocker, a needle broke and it really scared me making me feel anxious when I get it out to use. Anyway, any information on the needles would be greatly appreciated 😊😊

@chrislusbytaylor3197
@chrislusbytaylor3197 4 жыл бұрын
@@Jessalli Nearly all overlocker manuals, except Janome and, I think, some Frister & Rossmann, say to do the upper looper first. This is nearly always the second from the right. Brenda says hers is like that. Your reply to her says "some say lower looper before upper". It is the other way round. You in your video say lower looper before upper, she is saying the opposite. But I think you are right that it isn't always important, depending on where you take the tails to after threading. If you take them to the back of the foot, the lower looper thread should pass over the upper looper and its thread. This, I believe, is why most manuals specify that order. Far more important, in my experience, is to unthread the needles, or at least cut the threads after the needles and pull new tails out, whenever you rethread a looper. Personally, I find threading the needles hard with my eyesight, so I prefer to pull the thread through the needles with tweezers, then cut it and pull out any existing thread chain.

I put close up shots throughout. This was filmed years ago so if I get time I'll do it again in future.

Well in my personal opinion for a free video that was filmed 3 years ago, I give adequate advice. If you would like a personalised online lesson please do let me know as I run a sewing school and would be happy to do so at a charge of course.
