A nice access to the Appalachian Trail via the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail (OVNHT). The trail meanders through several meadows/cow pastures offering stunning views. No clear footpath but fairly easy to figure out as it follows old farming roads. Once the trail finally enters the woods it becomes a single track footpath, much easier to follow but becomes steeper. At this point there is still over 1 mile to reach Yellow Mountain Gap at the intersection with the AT. Overall, 3.44 miles to the top. The Overmountain Camping site is on the other side of the mountain.
Little Hump, Bradley Gap and Hump Mountain can be accessed from here via the AT without the large crowds experienced at Carvers Gap. A great alternative.
The Birchfield Trail is also a nice hike that follows Left Prong Hampton Creek. You can make a loop with the OVNHT.
The parking area can accommodate 10-12 vehicles and is nestled in the TN mountains. There is an information kiosk with a map and trail description on the back that is too close to the barbed wire fence. There is an overnight parking permit to fill out.
