The ferry from Kiel in northern Germany to Gotenburg in Sweden is a great way for a missing sleeper train (especially for passengers from The Netherlands, Belgium northern France and big parts of Germany) on the route by train to Norway. In this video I'll take you on board of the Stena Germanica, one of the vessels on this route and give you as much useful information as possible.
If you have any questions, feel free to let me know.

Try Color Line from Kiel to Oslo? Much bigger ship, you will love it! Panorama lounge, several restaurants and shops, shows, aqualand, pool, casino, and much more!

Last trip I made in the summer of 2023, the WiFi was free even in the cabins. Just quite slow.

Oohh thats nice, I guess on board of a vessel it's impossible to offer fast free wifi.

@@Trainviking It's faster, if you're willing to pay. ;-) I tried that once, but usually I don't need it, so I stick with the free one.

I calculated a decent cruise ferry with dual RORO decks (that is dual full hight, not the half hight), and it turned out, calculating on lorries alone, that (also considering the shorter route) the ship use less fuel than if the lorries would be driving, and that was even when calculating it on 25.25meter long lories. But the diffrance was not huge. It was a Travemünde-malmö route i calculated it on, and there was no consideration for foot passanger what so ever, they was so to say carbon "free": Its worth saying that ships like Color line Fantasy and Viking glory, while having just one truck deck are absolutely gigantiun being 2-3 trucks longer and about 3 trucks wider, still carrying capacity not far of the dual level roro ships. Specially since viking glory have a very efficient drive train 11:20 Either that shower is huge, or you have ultra wide angle on. The first one or two number in the cabin name is the floor, but the 3rd to end number, tells you where it is on the ship. Even odd are (if i remember it corect) the left side, and even are on the right. Number y1xx and y2xx is in front of the most forward staircase. y3xx and y4xx is between the first and second staircase, and y5xx and y6xx is behind the second staircase.. The numbers after that is just in order. so 10614 or what it was is 10 floor, right side, behind the second lift/staircase, and good a bit back (this is not quite unversial) 13:24 Bummer, i really want them to ad a cruise ferry category on that platform 19:32 I see there that they have e bit diffrent layout, but basically the same

Haha I use a wide angle, but the showers are pretty big as well. About carbon emissions, I think I might have spoken before I should have done this for the route Oslo - Kiel (maybe that deserves another trip report one day) however it's really hard to find a good comparison for ferries, also because a ferry is caring freight, etc. Freight vessels are know for being big environmental friendly at all, so I guess the difference between different ferries van be HUGE. I also want to make some videos on ferries in Taiwan, because to the Islands of Taiwan you find most (basically only, apart from one other route) domestic flights. If you know more on how to calculate this, please let me know. I want to inform my audience with facts, not opinions haha.

@@Trainviking well.. its not that hard to calculate. The issue is that its never fully objective because even if you calculate correctly, there is still some source data that need to be selected.

The Stena Germanica is two years older than the Scandinavica, but I like it much better. The layout of decks on the Scandinavica is very confusing, on the Germanica I find it much easier and also much cozier.

Aahhh actually now you made me curious about the other vessel haha. Maybe for the next time, I'll be sailing on this route (although I try to take other routes for trip reports).

@@Trainviking yep, sounds nice :) the Germanica has all the restaurants, shops etc on one level (7) with only cabins on the remaining decks. On the Scandinavica everything is at the front and the staircases there are pretty confusing, for me at least.

I intend to use it in a few months by myself, so thank you for the review. I"m still undecided about choosing the Taste or the Metropolitan Restaurant. Buffet restaurants happen to be not so relaxed for the solo traveller, but in the video it seems quite okay. Couldn"t find details on the offering in the Metropolitan a la carte restaurant either. Any thoughts about that?
@Trainviking
@Trainviking Жыл бұрын
I don't know the offering of the Metropolitan restaurant, must be better I guess. And for a solo traveler, it's just what you prefer. Of course going out for dinner alone is different then together but I saw more solo travellers.

If you take in consideration the impact on nature the manufacturing of the ship, train, train tracks and the fuel used on open sea by ferry this is a much larger nature killing way of tea el than do the trip Netherlands to Oslo by flight. Beautiful video however

Can you show numbers? Come with numbers and scientific research and I can maybe change my mind. However I think none of this is true, when I looked up numbers at least. You will have an audience if you can proof this.

@@Trainviking no problem too little space here. First you need to find the raw material for train tracks then diesel is used and you blow up mountains that has taken millions of years to form, then transport to factory means tons of CO2 emission, then melt the raw material using high temperature, then next transport to building site using ships traveling with oil on open sea letting out more tons od CO2, then work on site to put the tracks in place even more emissions Then manufacture the train itself uses about 100x more energy than building a plane Build a ship just find data from ship manufacturer and you will see How fresh is the air in China where they build these monsters? You cannot see 2 km because of pollution in the air The ships on open sea use oil to run engines, use maritime radar to see all ships on the oceans, they clean their tanks polluting the water in open sea as well even if it is not allowed And a thing I didn't mention before, electric cars are the same polluting manufacturing since you need raw material from earth for batteries But okay you do not see the pollution ships, trains, cars use while all things are manufactured you just travel If the factories were in your backyard then you would realize the problem but everyone ships manufacturing to other side of the world and brag how well their country is doing while they instead hide the pollution to another side of the world Be real friend, open eyes and do your own research I have done that but who cares everyone wants cheap junk and be "environmentally friendly" by not see the real problem

As a big enthusiast of transit and view minimizing the environmental intensity of my travel (I just went from Bratislava to antwerp yesterday by train). I appreciate you mentioned the challenges of sustainability of ferries. I find the data transparency extremely poor. It's very hard to compare the real carbon intensity of these ferries, as the EU doesn't require (imo) detailed enough disclosures. I have considered taking the TGV from Brussels to the south of France, then a ferry to Algires or morroco, but I'm not sure it's actually better than flying based on what I have read.

For passenger transport the majority of ro-ro ferries are practically zero emissions because their primary function is freight transport, without any passengers they would still run using near enough the same energy.

@Trainviking
@Trainviking Жыл бұрын
It is still depending on many factors and I guess the lost I show in my video isn't really an independent list. Ferries are better than cars and planes that's 100% for sure. On this route there are alternatives as well, however for most routes that's not the case so the only option is between a ferry and a flight, than the ferry pretty much always winns.
@matsv201

@@alang5764 It kind of depend what balance they have. There is rather big diffrance between something like Serenade for Color Fantasy and Stena germanica. The first two are basically cruise liners with 2 floors of trucks and cars While the second category is basically ferries with half a floor of cruise like activities.
