Planned to head up to New Hampshire to hike this weekend to a couple possible different locations. Got a call from my buddy who wanted to come with. We decided on hitting Mt Garfield for the weekend. We headed up the Gale River Trail (which I think I refer to multiple times as the Galehead Trail within the video), then met up with the Appalachian Trail or the Garfield Ledge Trail. Stopped and stayed at the very busy Garfield Shelter and Tent site that was filled with AT hikers, Pemi Loopers, and the likes of us. Hit Mt Garfield the next morning and then went back out the Garfield Trail and road walked back to the car.
This was probably my favorite trip so far this year. I was able to chat to a bunch of NOBO AT hikers on trail and talked to two sisters heading Nobo for probably a good hour while eating at the camp site. Also, through 100% sheer coincidence, it turned out that 5 years ago, exactly to the day, was the day that we had stayed at this shelter while I was out on the Appalachian Trail. We even pulled up the old pics to check the date and suffice to say our minds were blown.

During the pandemic I was leaving trail and summit names out of many of my videos due to issues with massive overcrowding on the trail, as well as, issues in regards to what I would consider uneducated or irresponsible hiker behavior. The most notable of which was trash, and human waste / toilet paper I was finding directly on, or just off, trail. I kept some of the trail and location names in this video. If you are using this video for planning purposes, please use the trail responsibly and try to follow leave no trace principles. It only takes one person not doing so to ruin it for everyone. If you are a newer hiker please watch this video before heading out on trail: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ms6Uaqhl162tp3U.html Here is an article about the issue with trash and human waste specifically in the Whites www.nhpr.org/post/trouble-trails-forest-service-grapples-crowds-trash-and-human-waste#stream/0 Another article about Max Patch (an iconic part of the Appalachian Trail) and the issues occurring there www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2020/09/23/max-patch-residents-campers-creating-safety-hazards-mountain/5858936002/ Here you can learn about leave no trace (LNT) principles lnt.org/why/7-principles/ www.nps.gov/articles/leave-no-trace-seven-principles.htm

Thanks for posting this. This was really enjoyable. I have been watching a ton of New Hampshire hiking videos lately trying to pass the long winter days by. I have to say this is one of the best produced and more enjoyable ones i have seen. I appreciate how you let the scenery just speak for itself. But wow was that campsite crowded!

Very interesting. Next month I plan to be in that area doing the Pemi loop and plan on camping at that site. I visited the first time in late June doing the presidentials to celebrate my 60th birthday using the huts to simplify the process and liked them so much I have Lakes of the clouds reserved again.

I don't like hiking on wet rocks and then I see you get to the part where water is running down the trail over the rocks. Yeah, when you pulled out that cinnamon roll, I figured if there were any thru hikers nearby, they would come out of their tents for that smell. Enjoyed this one. John from MI

Love your videos Chris. I go to NH once a year. I’m a guy from Kentucky and I love Kentucky but NH is so incredible. I love the Whites. Those mountains and creeks are so incredible out there. Awesome video and area Chris. 👍🏻👍🏻. I can’t wait to get back there in NH in April. “Live Free Or Die” 😁

great to see you hiking with your friend (did we last see him in the winter?), really amazing video of the scenery, tasteful choice of music. Chris, glad to see you've been making more videos of late. My wife and I really enjoy the chill nature of them and the awesome job you do putting them together. What's your camera setup? I had been looking at getting a gopro for my wife due to the compact nature and internal stabilization but reviews have been very mixed, especially in regards to battery issues. I'm not opposed to other camera styles, that's just what she had expressed interest in.

I own a full Sony and Panasonic mirrorless setup. This video was filmed with the Panasonic s5 and 16-28 sigma f2.8 lens. Some of the other photo gear is listed in the video description too

@@ChrisGoesOutdoors Haha, thanks, now I feel like an idiot for not look all the way down through! I would love to go with a mirrorless setup since it's not as bulky as by DSLR that I hardly use, just not sure if she'd prefer to keep it lighter weight and compact.

What do you think of an October pemi loop first week? like average temperatures at night. I have a 20 degree bag, north face Stormbreak one, and would get a sleeping bag liner. Warm enough? Kelty cosmic down 20 is the bag. Thanks man
