This QB money conversation is so over blown. Trevor Lawrence's projected Cap hits until 2027: 2024 - $15 million(5.9% of cap), 2025 - $17 million(6.5% of est cap), 2026 - $24 million(8.5% of est cap), 2027 - $35 million(11% of est cap). This is why you get the deal done. If he's league average, you are spending less than 10% of the cap until 2027. If he's top 10 or better, he's a bargain.

It's overblown bc the media is making it that way. That's all I heard "RECORD BREAKING CONTRACT" except everyone knows it's not
@snowhawk04
@snowhawk04 7 күн бұрын
Getting the deal done sooner than later was the right choice. And yea, people are overreacting to the topline number. The contract is closer to Herbert than Burrow. I do think only looking at cap hits is wrong though and the % of cap is based on an unlikely projection of cap growth. The guaranteed dollars essentially makes the contract floor $202M for the next 5 years. There just aren't any opportunities to walk away from him without a full salary buyout. You said "If he's top 10 or better, he's a bargain" and that "If" is really doing a lot of work here to not be Danny Dimes.
@173jaSon371
@173jaSon371 7 күн бұрын
The one thing you are missing is that QBs are taking up a higher percentage of the salary cap than 10-20 years ago. I think that is the one thing that is being overlooked by most people. In 2024, 5 QBs will be 19% of their teams entire salary cap. Just last year even, there were 0 guys taking up that much cap space with the 3 biggest hits being Mahomes(17.7%), Tannehill(16.3%), and Goff(13.8%). There has been a big shift these last 4-8 years. Carr getting 25mil was a huge deal exactly 7 years ago as of this week. Now 50mil is a bargain. It'd make some sense if the cap had doubled since then, but it's only climbed by about 50%.

Extension or no extension, BA is making the same amount of money this year. Niners extended Dre Greenlaw early for a team discount and they're trying to do the same with BA right now. My guess is camp rolls around and they offer $29 or maybe $30. They're doing their due diligence, as they always do.
@snowhawk04
@snowhawk04 7 күн бұрын
"Extension or no extension, BA is making the same amount of money this year." This is wrong. Right now, Aiyuk's 5th year option has him slated to make 14.124M. An extension around $29M APY is going to have a minimized P5 Salary and a sizable signing bonus to push more money into years 4 and 5. The same happened with Deebo. Minimized salary and a 24M signing bonus. A 25M signing bonus would push BA's cash flow to 26.125M this season. Almost double the amount of cash for 2024 and job security for the next 3 seasons. Aiyuk has been eligible for an extension for a year now. This isn't the "early" stage anymore. And the 49ers aren't slapping BA with a $24M franchise tag next offseason. The deadline to get this done is approaching quick.
@JoshuaByfield
@JoshuaByfield 5 күн бұрын
@@snowhawk04 fair enough but I would push back on the franchise tag offering. Why wouldn't they do the tag next year for less than the AAV he's asking for?
@snowhawk04
@snowhawk04 5 күн бұрын
@@JoshuaByfield The Salary Cap still exists is why the 49ers can't tag him next year. Right now, the 49ers have roughly 30M in cap space with Aiyuk's 14M 5th year option charged against their cap. Say Aiyuk plays this season on that 14M cap number. The 49ers will make their end-of-season cap adjustments and have about 26M in cap space remaining at the end of the season. The 49ers have aggressively rolled over any leftover cap space instead of the owners pocketing it and I expect nothing to change for 2025. They'll rollover all 26M in cap space into next season. Based on the current projected salary cap growth, the 49ers 37 contracted players in 2025 have the team 16M over the cap. Add the 26M in 2024 rollover and they are 10M under the cap. The WR franchise tag for 2025 should be about 24M. The 49ers would need to manipulate other contracts (cut, trade, restructure/extend) to create the extra 14M in space needed to account for that franchise tag. Then you have to make a deal with him, which again takes time. With no cap space, the 49ers are going to be prevented from doing anything in free agency. And if Aiyuk signs the 24M tender, there goes all the money the 49ers have been saving to pay Purdy. Aiyuk still doesn't have to sign a long-term contract and can just walk in 2026. If Aiyuk is extended before this season starts using the structure I mentioned in my previous comment (29M APY), his cap hits would be 6.1M, 12.6M, 25M, 29.55M, 36.775 with 2 void years of 3.7M and 2M. He would fit next year and then we get back to what 49ers fans were talking about around the draft, moving on from Deebo to accommodate Purdy's contract. edit - I brought up restructure/extend contracts to make cap space. The 49ers can get 9.148M this year by extending Ward. Next year, they can get 12.4M from Deebo, 10.5M from Kittle through extensions. They can get 17M from Trent, 14.9M from Hargrave, and 13.1M from Warner through restructures. Purdy is eligible for an extension as soon as the regular season ends. Greenlaw and Lenoir are free agents likely to get extensions next offseason. Banks and Hufanga are likely gone.
@JoshuaByfield
@JoshuaByfield 5 күн бұрын
@@snowhawk04 Well that's not a good reason. They'll have cap space for $26 million if they move off Deebo, which they are almost assuredly doing after this season.
@snowhawk04
@snowhawk04 5 күн бұрын
@@JoshuaByfield You really think the 49ers are going to move Deebo AND not pay Aiyuk a market LTD? You can't trade Deebo until after June 1 because he has a 21M dead cap hit and gives the 49ers a cap saving of 6.8M. You're still short on paying Aiyuk's franchise tag tender. And if you didn't come up with the money to pay him 24M, Aiyuk is still not gonna be happy (reports already have him turning do offers of 24M and 26M APY). Basically, if you want Aiyuk on the 49ers beyond this year, you gotta pay him 30M APY. The only other options is to trade him for draft compensation or you let him walk next year. The trade compensation isn't going to be amazing. I can't see them taking a midlevel talent with an enormous contract (e.g. McLaurin). A 3rd round compensatory in 2026 when he walks next year is a realistic option. Note - I think they get it done. We've seen the 49ers lowball their own players before. If they didn't actually want him, they would have moved him like they did Buckner. Kittle, Bosa, and Deebo have all had contentious negotiations with Paraag Marathe. Aiyuk is just the latest. Wake me up in late july.

2:45 "CB - Brandon Aiyuk won't play for the 49ers this year. RE - That's absurd." Is it really absurd? My own perspective as a 49ers fan is that this scenario is absolutely possible. The reported offered APY's are 26M (Mike Silver) and 24M (Matt Miller). If those numbers are actually true, I don't blame Aiyuk for not wanting to re-up. There's no way he would be competing with the cash flow and guarantees of his peers. And Paraag Marathe, the 49ers contract man, is always like this. Lowball your star player rather than offer the market value and eventually cave in during the late summer when the deadline approaches. Happened with Bosa. Happened with Deebo. This front-office is willing to make moves for the long-term health of their team. We traded Buckner and stuck with Armstead. Aiyuk isn't gonna sit out. He's not skipping the biggest game checks he's seen thus far. He'll report late, take his fines, play this season, then walk. And no, the 49ers are not going to slap him with a $24M franchise tag next year. The whole point of building the $30M in cap space to roll over is to eventually pay Purdy. The 49ers are going to make Purdy the highest paid QB in the league. It's not a secret. Every level of that franchise is all-in on him. The problem with getting Aiyuk extended is the cap hits. They need to keep the hits low in the first two years which balloons the back half when Purdy's cap hits are going to matter. And I can't see the 49ers just letting Aiyuk walk and being fine with a 3rd round compensatory pick in 2026. Trading him is absolutely on the table. Aiyuk and Shanahan have had their issues, even this past season when Kyle would overreact to Aiyuk running the wrong route/option. Shanahan had Aiyuk in his the Pettis doghouse for 2 years. If the 49ers are truly offering him an APY in the mid-low 20s, I don't want to hear anything about first-round pick draft compensation. They aren't trading for Terry McLaurin as his remaining 2 years. His cap hits are 16.5M and 18M. Oh, and he's 31 in 2026. Start thinking Jahan Dotson plus an early day 3 pick. Wake me in late July. Let Aiyuk and Lynch/Marathe figure it out.
