As an American living in Europe I am constantly struck by how SHORT campaign seasons are and no direct donations. Financing reform in the USA now!
@mikehvirdisАй бұрын
Sure - we watch the US from the UK with the 'inverse' concern. There you have almost perpetual campaigning, and Citizens United made a nonsense of politics by just fuelling it with $$$$$$$$$. UK limits spend per constituency to a TINY sum and campaign financial limits about a thousandth of the US, six week campaigns and votes all hand counted in one evening.
@benwu7980Ай бұрын
@@mikehvirdis Irish here also looking on in some bewilderment. Not sure exactly what limits are on political donations and campaign spending, but they certainly exist. Also, like the UK and most Euro countries, when we have an election year, it's just for a few months at most. I think posters can only go up 2 months ahead of an election. They do slightly get around those restrictions, by sending out circulars to letterboxes in their areas, but that's fairly benign and can be considered informative. You are completely correct regarding Citizens United, it's a travesty and would be laughable if weren't such a serious blight.
@ronblack7870Ай бұрын
i don't know enough about how it works there but in canada there is no set date for an election. it can occur anytime up to 5 years after the last one. so an election is announced and it's 6 weeks after it's announced.

Three guests from different backgrounds with different areas of expertise having a civilized discussion, sharing their opinions and knowledge, while asking questions and respecting another. To answer your question Bill, Bitcoin's value is in that it is fully decentralized not owned or manipulated by a power who then endlessly debases that currency by printing off more (USD). Bitcoin mining is the decentralized security of the network around the world mostly all run on excess grid loads which then turn off when those grid loads are in need. This stabilizes the local grids and helps the municipalities. Stranded green energy is the most attractive for btc because where other traditional sources can't take advantage of stranded energy, Bitcoin can enable growth in this field more than most industries and miners want it because it is the cheapest option.

That’s not correct. “Dutch disease” refers to the revaluation of a country’s currency that occurs when it has large oil exports which result in its non-oil products becoming non-competitive and leading to deindustrialization. What the panel was discussing is how primitive societies fail to develop human capital and modern civil and economic institutions when their elites can rely on oil exports.

re: Ronna McDaniel, She went on a NBC's Meet The Press and said there was still a problem with the 2020 presidential election, so is continuing the "Big Lie". I don't think anybody from the networks of NBC should exclude her from being a guest, and they didn't, allowing her to come on Meet The Press, but on air staff at NBC is held to a higher standard than those at Fox or Newsmax, where I'm sure she'd fit right in.

Bill and his show, still knocking it out of the ballpark! Maher is loaded with talent and intellect and is right at the top of his game, and I love the diversity of the guests. Just keeps getting better and better. I always called it comedy with "nutrition" but I heard him use the term "edu-tainment" which is a perfect description. No entertainer has ever made me laugh - or think - so much. :)

I've been heavily involved in several aspects of the arts for many years - theatre, film, comedy, classical music, popular music ... not to mention journalism. My home library is the largest room in my house (and, yes, I've read them, a wide variety of history, fiction, nonfiction, science fiction, health, etc. etc....) My op eds have won accolades. But if you don't agree with or like my preferences ... sorry, not sorry! 😛

@@RosemaryH4259 it's not about agreeing or liking. It's about broadening and expanding. What really was said on this show? Maher is a talking head, as are his guests, and nothing is really EVER discussed in depth because it's meant to be that way. It's also why the format works the way it does...like fast food.

From your reply I would surmise you consider all your sources and draw your own conclusions regarding CONTENT. I believe your compliment is meant for the particular STYLE of this host and show, and how comedy and topical content are combined.
@RosemaryH4259Ай бұрын
That is your opinion, which I do not share. I am fully aware of the limitations of this genre of television program, and enjoy this program because it works hard to break out of those limitations. It cannot be, nor is it meant to be, a graduate course at Harvard. I simply enjoy it, and just for what it offers, and I fold it into my repertoire of information and fun. I also do not consider him a "taking head" or the show to be "fast food". That's my opinion.

No one cares about us because we're a small population of boring pushovers ruled by oligarchs. We're basically America's lap dog, the pseudo state in waiting. Whatever the U.S. does, Canada usually follows right behind them doing something very similar. So, there's no need to think of us as a separate entity.

@@yuriydee this is a good follow on point. Both Canada and Norway fit the mold that was mentioned when discussing the United States - countries that had stable government and systems, then discovered oil. Taking time to invest that oil income into something that helps the average citizen, putting in systems that also prevent mass corruption.
