A quick overview on how to check the valves on a 2008 Yamaha Big Bear. I'm a little redundant in the video but I didn't want to miss anything. The specs for the valve clearances are included. I made this for when I check the valves again in a couple of years...
**I had to take off a few of the bolts holding the tank plastic in order to slide the gas tank back in.. might want to do that prior to removing the tank**

Don't you want the valves to be closed on top dead center when you set the valve lash instead of open

You know what, never even noticed that until now. Not sure why I said that in the video. But I think as long as it's on the T-mark, it's hard to go wrong... and as it so happens, I worked on the BB today.. thought I needed new front wheel bearings.. as it turned out, somehow the guy mounting my tires mounted a front Maxxis Big Horn to my rear rim, and the rim was cutting a groove into my front A-Arm. No clue how he managed that, and no idea why it took me until today to figure that out

If the clearances are out of regs, will the valve specs present particular issues with regard to the redundancy meter as compared with the 1985 Yamaha Master Blaster, which everyone knows is the predecessor of your Big Bear. May I suggest a future video topic of checking the muffler bearings? Its very important to ensure a safe ride. LT8600

The easiest part is actually checking the valves.. slip a feeler gauge under them, then adjust as needed. There are XR650L YT videos that show closeups of how to use the feeler gauges, I can't get in there with the plastics on the BB
