Bonjour 'Blinders After assisting 1,400 'vans & motorhomes I still maintain "There are two kinds of self builds; those that are over weight, and those that haven't been weighed yet". Another great video & thank you for cutting through some of the misinformation around the internet, so it's good to see some clarity on the matter making it through the noise, and in an entertaining way too. (we've subscribed too)

Well said! this is so true as you know, I was amazed at how many of the vans we looked at last year were over weight and the owners were oblivious to the consequences if stopped by the police or VOSA or if involved in a RTC of any description After our conversations it became apparent we need to address the elephant in the room, thanks for all your advice and support in creating this video guys 😀👍

There are at least 2 Utube Vanlifers who need to watch this. One who thinks he is a convertor got very upset when I asked him whether he had weighed the van he had completed for another couple, it was made of 3x2 and loads of tong and grove timber with a wood burning stove 🙀🙀amazing that he was so cavalier about another vehicle and the very real possibility that the owners could suffer what you have highlighted. Great vid.

Exactly why people need to be aware of the basics, the rules and regulations there's alot of expensive mistakes on the road I believe I know who and the van you're referring too

Great video Sam. I used Dee for my up plating, all done very quickly and docs came back from DVLA in 24 days from sending,so hopefully you wont have long to wait now.

Brilliant video Sam! I will be using VWE to get my van up plated. Even though I am living in the Republic of Ireland they are able to help me out so suffice to say I shall be chuffed to keep my van legal. September last year I had the van on a weighbridge. Half a tank of fuel, 35 litres of water, our dog (33kg), my wife and I on board...we tipped the scales at 3460kg! We did go away to Europe in it for three months but I was always a bit anxious of getting pulled over, especially in France. So now I am rebuilding the interior using a lot of aluminium in place of much more timber. Just recently installed 5 ton springs which has markedly improved the way the van drives but it is obviously sitting higher. Fortunately I passed my driving test in 1981 so I have the C1 category.

Hi Sam,great video when I started my build I always had weight in mind as well as weight displacement, which i think is also important nice one love watching your content (first one I've commented on by the way)

Thank you for your comment it nice to hear from you The selfbuild camper community is a great place, but the weight issue is rarely mentioned as most fear the unknown Hopefully this will get the conversation started as we have a lot to loose by getting it wrong 👍

@@TheCraftyBlindersvanlife I used them last year to up-plate to my max without any mods. Like you got rid of towbar which gained me 35kg. Will be using them again as I plan to fit uprated rear springs..

Yes the elephant in the room is loose 🤣🤣🤣 but not for long van an HGV are the next cash cow to fill the governments coffers with the rollout of WIMS

Right on, Sam. Every self-builder has to keep an eye on the vehicle weight - this also holds true in Germany, although we don't have this "plate-business" to worry about. All the other concerns (insurance loss, fines, impounding) are valid if you get caught beyond the 3.5 ton limit. My driver's license is ancient, so I am still allowed to drive up to 7.5 tons, but the GVW of a van would have to be upped through suspension modifications and re-certification.

@@TheCraftyBlindersvanlife Indeed. There are companies here specialising in air suspensions for a variety of makes. Add spring replacement and a favourable tire / wheel combo and you have the prerequisites for a date with your local "TÜV" official (similar to your MOT people, I believe?). Bring some money (a three figure amount of Euros will do) and if the official is in a good mood, you'll end up with altered papers to document your raised GVW. It's very much like rolling dice and "enter the gauntlet", as every official appears to have his / her own - sometimes very colorful - interpretation of motor vehicle regulations. God-like creatures, so to speak.

Hi Sam, thanks for the informative video, however, you missed an important fact, you never included the weight of yourself and other passengers, this is something most people forget but if you're right on the cusp of your weight limit and then you get in it with your family, then when you go over the new mobile weight machines you mentioned, then it will read you as overweight, I drove class1 aggregate lories and we had to be sat in the cab when we weighed in fully loaded. Hope this helps.

My first port of call was SvTech but they would only plate my van to 4050kg, I wanted more, much more 🤣🤣🤣 in the end I got all I could out of the exercise without spending thousands

Newhaven to dieppe... 2 days paris cause tracey hasn't been ... then down to St tropez for Xmas... then follow the weather lol ....back march for mot ...which fits in nicely with schengen... save days then head to Turkey I think but we'll make minds up in March for that 1 😊😊

Have heard that they can apply weights for passengers even if they are not in the van. I.e 5 belted seats, means they could add 75kgs per person, regardless of if they are in the van or not. Similarly apply the weight of full fuel and water tanks too. Know whether this is true or scaremongering?

ALSO if your goin in to europe in your van , like Germany places like that , an over weight vehicle can be held at the side of the road and you could lose your van there while in another country ,

Hi Sam, Picked up my new 3.5 Crafter van up April this year, fully converted. I have worried about what our true weight is. As you say its very important. Sadly i lost my C1 rights this year reached 70 so weight is an issue. I am thinking about loading our van as we normally do for a trip and drive to a weigh bridge just to see what the weight is. I have spoken to guys on site and i was surprised how many did not have a clue about the weight issue and some same age as me don't know that you loose your C1 at 70 unless to agree to yearly health checks to retain your C1

I was HGV driver in a past life so the weight of my vehicle was always a concern and something I watched carefully As I walked around the festival fields this summer it became apparent a lot of people had this issue and didn't know how to deal with it It made sense to try and develop a video to discuss the elephant in the room hopefully this will switch people on to the facts and their responsibilities

Hi Sam. Thanks for this video. Weight has been something I'm increasingly aware of as my LWB Crafter build progresses. I've completed the solar on the roof. I wish I used aluminum instead of steel unistrut frame now buy hey-ho it's done. I'm kinda thinking of a re-circulating shower to keep the fresh water & grey tank small. Also thinking of 80/20 aluminum cabinet construction with lightweight panels. There is a premium to pay for this but poplar ply panels ain't cheap! Any thoughts? One question: do you think there is a weight saving with the alloy wheels and the tyres you are using over the steel originals?

The alloy wheel against the steel wheel are probably around the same weight However you can carry more weight on the alloys as they are higher rated for weight the steel rims limit you

Some great advice. I have a Crafter with a tow bar, will it really gain me 35Kg if I remove it as one of your viewers commented on. To be fair I never use the tow bar as it came with it on when I purchased it.

It is of course the date you passed your test not the date you were born that gives grandfather rights for more than 3.5t. Had to do my C1 even though born in 1965 as I didn’t pass car test until 1999.
