Best instructions, thank you. I have done very little hardware tinkering and this was pretty easy. Don’t skip the optional step of taking the rubber things of the retaining clips. I did and while everything looked fine I guess my memory wasn’t seated properly. (Power light came on, then went off). Did the whole process over removing the rubber things this time and success!

Just upgraded my Mac mini from 8GB as purchased to 32GB. Following this video, made the upgrade doable. I watched the video completely through the first time before starting. Then restarted the video and stopped at each step as I completed each sub task. Took me about one hour, going slowly and double checking everything. The upgrade makes my Mac mini much faster doing photo editing. Thank you for posting this.

Great tutorial. I thought I broke the mini when it wouldn't boot up after upgrade. I opened it back up and put the original ram back in, still wouldn't boot up. Opened it up again reinserted new ram again and being just as careful as before still wouldn't boot.... repeated one more time and it worked... whew.... So I imagine it was just me not seating the ram correctly....

Just got the mini, and followed this guide to install more ram. I have worked on nearly every Mac since the fist one, the “Classic,” and for the first time, I broke something: a cable connector housing. It just lifted off the pads of the motherboard with almost NO pressure applied with my spudger. It must have been a cold solder joint, because of the way it popped off. Now I have a doorstop. Off to the Apple store tomorrow. Many have done this very simple upgrade with success, just be very careful, I may have had a bad connector.

Apple computers have always been very picky about the quality of the memory used. The cheap, generic RAM that PC's use doesn't always work. Yes, sometimes you can get lucky and find some that does but most of the time you won't. Apple's markup on RAM isn't as high you think because it is higher quality than cheap, generic RAM. Even aftermarket RAM that is guaranteed to work with Macs is nearly as expensive.

Yeah. I just tried 'plain old T6' and it looks like I stripped my bolts. I'll see if I can find and try some 'tamper proof' T6 heads, but I'm pretty pissed at the moment.

I got one recently and it had tamper proof T6 screws. Make sure you get tamper proof t6 bits

super important to use the "Security T6 Torx" screwdriver to remove the first 6 screws! Not the same as a T6 screwdriver. I caused myself hours of extra work not paying attention to that.

Some of the torx security screws can be removed with a flathead screwdriver but yes the torx security bits are definitely recommend

What’s the failure rate of 3rd party memory? Years ago 15-20% of simms failed and when units returned to Apple the memory chips would be removed and returned. Anyway, it seems amazingly complicated to replace but that’s the price of high maintenance beauty. But the convenience of being able to transfer 100GB FileMaker dabs using FileMaker Go between Apple computers with just the touch of a button using AirDrop makes it all good for me.

JaimeRayVaughn well, with anything, you can do it with patience. I’d say if you’re worried that you’re going to break it, bring it to a third-party shop or ask someone you know to help you.

Actually I have two minis. One at the vacation house and one at home. The old one is so much better. It has ram right on top. You just twist bottom off. It unscrews. Then the ram is right there. Plus it has a cddvd player. The new ones really suck, but I’d ididnt notice it had no DVD player. The old one, the good one is a 2009 model I think. Another thing...when I upgraded to Hi Sierra it crashed and I took it into Apple and they couldn’t fix it. So they lied and said it needed a. New HD. Two days later I got it back with the alleged new & free hard drive. WRONG. They did nothing. Eventually, I juked around with it and fixed it myself.

Apples memory specification is (2666 MHz). Our OWC memory upgrade kit is listed at 2666MHz DDR4 PC4-21300. The ram you mentioned could possibly work, but we haven’t tested any other capacities, so we cannot say for sure. When in doubt, it’s best to go with apples exact specifications.

I followed all of these steps exactly and upgraded from 8GB to 32GB - it's recognized and complete. BUT - Now there is a very strange squeal, faint sound coming from the Mac mini - it is annoying as hell. Any ideas on what this could be?

Either something is interfering with the fan, or there is coil whine, where a component vibrates at a very high frequency.

A TR6 Torx, a T5 Torx, and a T10 Torx are needed to open and work in this model macMini.

Yes all you really have to do is open the computers. Front panel and then open the ram holders on the motherboard . Pretty much no screws . No unplugging stuff . Very easy

I had the same issue, the connector was not soldered onto the board properly. Sent it back as it was within the 14 day return period and then ordered another!

Be very careful with the LED cable connector. I broke it. Luckily it's non essential. I can live without the LED. Break any other cable connector on the logic board and it's going to be a lot more troublesome.

The other thing to take note of is to lay the chassis on a soft cloth. A section of the edges of the chassis seem to have micro chipping even with me laying it on a a soft mouse pad

Yes, it does void the warranty. As per Apple, it is not actually user-serviceable. You're "supposed" to pay them to upgrade it for you to retain your warranty. I just paid $450 finding this out the hard way. Could have just maxed out the RAM to 64GB for what I've spent now.
