This week, the Pugsters turn to another Touchstone article by Louis Markos, this one on Owen Barfield. Barfield was one of the Inklings along with C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien and helped nudge Lewis toward Christianity. He also was heavily influenced by Rudolph Steiner’s esoteric thought and tried to Christianize it. In this episode, the Pugsters discuss Barfield’s ideas about the relationship of human beings and the natural world, which argued that in the past people had a simple, spiritual relationship with the natural world but lost it with the Scientific Revolution. The goal, according to Barfield, is to bring the two together. On the way, the guys talk about Francis Bacon, Galileo, and whether you can keep the benefits of science and technology while losing their downsides.

Thank you, gentlemen, for yet another mentally stimulating presentation. I always come away from your discussions feeling just a little smarter, just a little more informed, just a little more soundly theological, just a little more Biblically literate, and completely entertained by your obviously real and fond commeradery and fascinating repartee. You make me very envious of having such close friends with which to share a pint and exchange truly meaningful conversation. God bless you three Pugsters and may you grumble together for all eternity to the glory of our Savior and Lord, Christ Jesus. Maranatha!

I’m reading Alan Jacob’s the Narnian and this is connecting so well with ideas presented in there! Also, this discussion reminds me of Charlotte Mason’s 12th Principle that is “education is the science of relations” that is, that we are to help kids form relationships with all areas of knowledge. She was a huge proponent of time spent in nature, a participatory knowledge like one you discussed. I highly recommend A Philosophy of Education. It seems to solve some of the weaknesses I see in the modern classical school movement. She herself was thoroughly classical (Latin, Plutarch, Shakespeare, etc) but taught that even young children were to be given life giving ideas through literature far more than rote memory. Grammar was not a stage but something ongoing. I myself am learning the grammar of the natural world that I missed as a child. I have jabbered on long enough. Great podcast!

I am reading Saving the Appearances now. Came here for some clarification. Barfield's writings tie my brain into knots. Thank you for loosening those knots a bit.

"it's because God" My fucking word. Saying this to children with cancer. It's because of God, in God own time, for God own reasons.

34:00 the historical christ is a revelation of the eternal son who has always been the begotten and the light to illumine all things Im Anschluss: Science as magic as exerting our control over nature control as imposing our will over things and wills. how to subdue reality to the wishes of men conforming the soul to reality

Human Culture and and individual people all operate on different levels of consciousness -- so you get some people to respond to the nudge and the reward -- but for people with a higher level of consciousness they will NOT respond to Pavlov's bell.
