I went to meet Caroline Lucas, the Green Party's only MP and former leader, to talk about what it means to be a Green, whether or not she's a socialist and to find out what hope she holds for the future.
Subscribe to The Guardian on KZfaq ► is.gd/subscribeguardian
We also chatted about why the Labour Party and Ed Miliband failed so badly at the last election, the need for a progressive coalition and what she thinks of the image of the Greens as a party for middle-class, sandal-wearing hippies.

Caroline Lucas - perhaps the bravest and certainly the most eloquent politician in Westminster. Nice one Owen, the Greens deserve a lot more publicity than they get. Part of me wishes she was still the leader of the Greens but the fact that she handed over that responsibility shows how committed she is to her constituency and how low her ego is. Compare that to Farage who wants to be an MP, an MEP and leader of a party all at once!

Interesting stuff, I am definitely left wanting more. I don't know how others feel but I would prefer something more like 15 minutes, maybe with more of a back and forth rather than just Owen asking short unconnected questions and Caroline answering. I sat through 15 minutes of Krishnan Guru-Murthy trying to get Jeremy Corbyn to admit he was a radical Marxist working for Hamas -- with two grown-ups in the room rather than just one, the interview shouldn't be only a third as long! You must have been there longer than 5 minutes, Caroline seems to have made it through two cups of tea. Great mugs btw

interesting interview. The Greens have a lot of good points to make, but there biggest problem does seem to be, as Owen points out, that they are viewed as a hippie, middle class party despite the fact that they are the most socialist party in parliament right now. Lucas points out that some of the best Green results took place in the poorest cities of the UK, but this was because that there support in these areas are driven by large concentrations of students, who are the demographic that the Greens are most popular with. They have the potential to win as much support as Ukip have, given that there is certainly some appetite for a socialist alternative in England. But to do that they need to boost there support amongst the working class. Best way of doing that would be to win a few defections from those on the Labour left, and to rebrand themselves so that people associate them with other left wing ideas like tackling inequality. Some system of PR would help too.

Owen Jones How about the failure of multiculturalism in Britain? or how the unemployed are stigmatized in the endless TV shows about benefits shown by TV companies owed by multimillionaires.
@Somecrazyshish
@Somecrazyshish 8 жыл бұрын
1965CAPTKIRK The stigmatization of the unemployed falls very neatly into 'Chavs: The Demonisation of the Working Class', I believe it may be mentioned in the book and Owen has shared his thoughts on it in a few interviews you can find on KZfaq. Considering the depth and detail of Chavs, there's very little new ground there. In regards to multiculturalism and it's failings there's an interesting documentary by Trevor Philips called 'Things We Won't Say About Race That Are True' which is a great piece of work on the subject

As a 50+ social and economic conservative, your views are largely anathema to me... ...although I have to say, you're not a bad political interviewer. I've watched a few of your interviews of politicians from across the spectrum and all of them have been more open and...human(?) than I have ever seen them before. There is something about your 'matey', non adversarial style (even when asking the 'uncomfortable' questions) that gets them to open up. A reasonably fair line of questioning, so far, in all cases - I would, though, like to see you play a little more devil's advocate when interviewing left wing politicians. You know the arguments against (even if you don't agree with them) - maintain the 'matey' but use it to cloak a little more ruthlessness! You are in the privileged position of holding these people to account on our behalf, after all.

Hi Owen, a couple of things - I'd personally love to see an interview with Jeremy Corbyn (if possible) but also I wanted to ask for advice as to how I could get involved with some community based projects. I'm 14 and have grown up around politics with both of my parents being former activists and councillors but now that they are both needed in full time work I'm stuck for ideas of how I can help around my area with a number of issues (e.g. homelessness etc) thank you, keep doing what you're doing :)

Hi Owen. Just started following you and bought book (The Establishment and how...). I don't vote because i can't move past my, well, distaste of politicians. And because i'm neither inspired nor convinced by any of them as people beyond their political ideas. Lately i feel i need to engage in politics thanks to you in part. 'Distaste' isn't an objective view so i'll just have to get over myself. But one politician should inspire me. Next election i want to vote. Which politician in your mind best fits your thinking? I figure if my political thinking seems closest to yours then my political enlightenment might be through you...mmm? I think i'm looking for some of advice to engage.

I heard Natalie Bennett speak in London a few months ago. To me she spoke well but without passion. There was no drive. In that sense Caroline Lucas was much better. In the recent election the Green candidate lived in the Neath area and did nothing in Bridgend. In fact there was little or no information other than that on-line - which I had to look up. I think they'd just accepted defeat and their candidate here was just a token. So I voted for Plaid

far too short but just wanna say I love Caroline Lucas, I think the Greens should get more votes and win landslides constantly, and I highly recommend people check out Caroline Lucas's excellent book "Honorable Friends: Parliament and the fight for change" although I wish Caroline was against the Syrian war and efforts to oust Assad and didn't appreciate her distancing herself from Stop the War Coalition. but she is brilliant and voice of reason and I wish the Greens were given more attention and made major gains.

Many Socialists voted Green - myself amongst them - because Labour wasn't any more. That has potentially changed beyond recognition. Two things follow. First, a need to continue dialogue between Greens and the Labour left, just as there used to be under the Kennedy Left Lib Dems and Greens (not a contradiction then). It's because Green polices and values are worth absorbing and they have ultimately the aspirations the Commonwealth Party had in 1945: to shift the terms of engagement of another party, viz Labour then. Second, if Jeremy Corbyn isn't elected, many of us might - after a period of reflection and dependant on the political courage of the Labour leadership - return to the Greens as both socialist and visionary on the environment. Strangely I feel the environment itself could have the final say on the meltdown of global capitalism, if it continues unchecked. But that's about 20-30 years down the hot road turning into a not very metaphorical dirt track. Owen, you might have a cast-iron reason why if say a leader is elected with a neo-Tory shuffle to their gait, I should stay in the Labour party. I'd genuinely like to hear it. Another temptation is to look at the Socialist Alliance. My worry is their lack of flexibility, historical battle re-enactments with pikes, and sometimes invisibility: they're all holding each others' heads underwater. I did vote for one of these as counsellor too, though elsewhere I had Green and Labour friends successfully standing (I'm from the People's Republic of Brighton and Hove, as you'd probably guessed). Last thought: sometimes a work of theatre can change things and these can promote change: even the Telegraph noted that Caryl Churchill's Light Shining in Buckinghamshire at the National recently might just change you vote.

Great interview. Thanks Owen. Have you reviewed Kate Raworth's worthy criticism of what we aim our economies at? - Namely if we are looking through the corporate capitailist blinkered lens - we aim our economies solely at the sacrificial alter of the expotential growth of GDP. The clarified concept of Kate Raworth's approach turns economics on its head - asking the question surely all socialists should ask - Why aren't we aiming our economies at the mutual well being of everyone in our communities along with our collaborative stewardship with what we all depend upon the most for our survival?

Owen, this will be drowned out in the murky waters of praise and trolling, but i will say it any way: you're twitchy, nervous and unconvincing in your manner. Which is totally at odds with what i know to be your intellectual and emotional conviction. The Labour party will either majestically cocoon and gestate into the nu-socialist party we wish it too...or, probably, the Blairites will hold dominion. In case of the latter, only the Greens and their now strong Union ties will lead the way.

You started with right, then left, is it going to alternate back to right again for the next interview? If so Peter Hitchens would be perfect, as long as it was respectful and thoughtful as your interview with Douglas Carswell was. Failing that how about Daniel Hannan, Jacob Rees Mogg, Peter Bone, Douglas Murray? Intelligent voice from the right so it could actually be a thoughtful exchange of ideas rather than a propaganda piece to try and portray the right as reactionary - many of us aren't like that. Also figures beyond politics could be interesting, maybe Justin Wellby,Antonio Mennini , Richard Dawkins could be fun :) Enjoyed the interview btw thanks.

How can you talk about "austerity" with a straight face when the country's still spending more than it takes in? I guess households across England have always been austere, since they've mostly had the common sense to spend less than what they make... You can blame Cameron and Osbourne for slashing expenses arbitrarily, but a left-winger like yourself should be appalled that the country's slowly selling itself off to mostly foreign financial enterprises by continuously running an unbalanced budget. Shouldn't you?

Many working class and poor people have been unaware that they would be helped most by the Greens. Caroline Lucas is a rare and fine politician of principles and concern for the marginalised. I hope both she and Jeremy Corbyn reap the electoral support they deserve. We do need a fair electoral system and a change to the overriding power of the right wing media; Murdoch has had the general election and referendum results and the voting system of his choice since 1979, though most people have been opposed to his preferred governments.

RobinHoodUKIP Typical UKIP. She was talking about these individuals who have been brainwashed she was not suggesting 16/17 as a group cannot think for themselves. She never said they are not mature, 45 year olds are brainwashed too.

grahamhg You pay VAT at the age of 5, that's a tax. Why not give the vote to 5 year olds? That's the point you're making. Secondly, everybody under 18 now needs to be in some sort of education so they won't be taxed a lot unless they're rich and take over the family business.

Why do people watch videos of a guy who openly supported the IRA military action against the British state? A direct quote "I militarily support the IRA against the British State..." So again, why is it people take this boy seriously. He is a boy who does not like this country and will always seek to undermine it.

Lqi Rig My point is he is always against his nation. Not once has he supported any action undertaken by this government or nation unless its something marxist in nature. My comment about him being a boy has nothing to do with his looks. It's his way of thinking that I find childish. It's his stroking of his own ego by trying to get everyone to like him but as soon as there's any opposition on any debate panel he shouts down his opponent. His rhetoric is usually something along the lines of if I can't have something then nobody can.

+Lqi Rig Let me brak down your reply; First off supporting minimum wage is nothing to be proud of. Minimum wage simply allowed corporations to underpay many jobs and give them a legal scapegoat. It's been proven many times that you simply can not live on minimum wage. Maybe you can get by but you can't live. For example Sports Direct in the UK hire many Eastern Europeans in their Main UK distribution HQ. They pay these people minimum wage but these people have no where to stay so the company rents a place to them but docks the rent from their wages. So this man basically becomes an indentured slave. Only ever saving scraps so there's no chance of moving out and finding your own place with a new well paying job easily. As for winter fuel allowance that's like putting a band aid on an amputation. The goverment has let the energy companies go into a conspiracy with each other in order to hike up rates and bring in more money for themselves. When old people started dying in the winter the government had no choice but to attempt to help even though they are as incompetent as they are. The Democracy of today is a joke. It's perhaps the single worst system of government. Only to have got this far because of the labours of our ancestors and their empires. This system has bred and harboured incompetent career politicians who are so out of touch with the people they struggle to even comprehend the life of a man on minimum wage. The plight of the working man are simply scary bedtimes stroies they read to their children. The only thing they have done is somehow convince us that they are actually doing a good job. But when you have the monopoly on media and propaganda then it's easy to convince people. As for feminism. Women in the west have their equality. My countries queen is now the longest reigning monarch this nation has ever seen. Margaret Thatcher was perhaps one of the best politicians of her time, Angela Merkel basically runs the entirety of the EU. If a man ever tells you he's in favour of the feminist movement today he's either patting himself on the back or trying to get into your pants. So Owen Jones has simply got on this out of control bandwagon simply because it looks good. Overall all this guy does is push a good rhetoric which mostly lacks substance.

Lqi Rig Steps towards what? Is "it" some kind of communist utopia. The dream of all leftists. Even if that was true, you're basically selling people out to accomplish your dream. By giving companies the exact policies that they need to turn over a greater profit. Most of his beliefs stem from Marxism. So of course they are valid. It's that kind of infantile thinking that has gotten us into the situation we are now. He himself has said he has 4 generations of his family involved in some kind of radical politics. In an interview he praises the man to death and believes marxism is relevant today. You claim to know the man yet know nothing about his beliefs?
