In this video, I'm sharing footage of a great grey owl banding event with wildlife biologist Denver Holt of the Owl Research Institute. This family of owls was banded as part of an ongoing study of great grey owl behavior.
As part of the owl banding program, Denver Holt and his assistants track the movements and breeding habits of these beautiful birds. This footage is a part of a study that will help scientists better understand the great grey owl's nesting habits and general life cycle.

These guys are literally just chilling, pretty amazing that they don't freak out when they're grabbed, maybe it's because evolutionarily speaking, if they struggle, they're likely to break one of their fragile bones?

You did a good job there, but you were also lucky that the mother owl didn't come on to you while you were ivestigating her babies. They might get pretty angry and agressive in situations like that wich is very dangerous.

indeed, sometimes their are effects. Look at that famous grizzly they always thought was all mangled because of fighting, turns out he clawed the crap out of his own face too get the dang HUGE collar off, where are the scientific studies on effects of radio equipment next to animals heads... I raised birds for years and some parrots would literally chew their feet off if they were banded, Definitely something to think about
@Ethan-uo4fr
@Ethan-uo4fr 2 жыл бұрын
@@jfreid3174 hmm. conservation is important, and idk about the chewing thing, but sometimes I feel like these kinds of studies are invasive… but in the end the knowledge gained and awareness spread by these kinds of programs is probably better for the great gray as a species in the long term

Wouldn’t it be best for humans to just leave our creatures alone ?
@danieljcox
@danieljcox 3 жыл бұрын
Some folks might think that would be best but without science we would not have any idea how these animals are doing. Kind of like sticking your head in the sand. An even better idea would be we humans all extirpate ourselves from the planet. That would be the best thing for all animals and that would include you as well. Just something to think about.

I very roughly estimate the equivalent band on a human leg to be at least 3 inches wide. If I was an owl I would not be very happy with these people. The only way I see this as justified is if this research directly saving owl's lives. Any reason other than that and these people are not so cool. So interesting to me that these people do this to birds they love. Humans are so lame.
