High school teacher Jon regularly walks through the forested area near his school, but this time he came across a shocking sight. A long-eared owl hung suspended by one wing, entangled in fishing line that was strung between two trees. She struggled feebly to escape the line, but it remained tightly wound around her feathers.
After reaching out for help, the compassionate teacher couldn’t bear to let the owl suffer any longer and took action to free her.

Those kids will never forget those simple lessons of how we can negatively impact the environment without thinking ahead. These videos are the reason that for the last 6 years, before disposing of household trash, I always put slits into plastic food bags, cups, yogurt containers, chop up plastic ties for bottles/cans, and never put jars into the trash without a lid fastened. I've seen too many videos of wildlife getting their heads stuck in these things, or otherwise trapped or injured when scavenging through garbage before it's picked up. Great story and reminder! Thank you, Jon and TWC!

Way to go, Jon! As a nature lover, I am moved by this. As an elementary school teacher, I am absolutely inspired and grateful that you used this as a teachable moment. I once brought a dead yellow-bellied sapsucker into my classroom (I was handling with gloves) to highlight the issue of window collisions (which is how he died). We mapped him on the Global Bird Collision Mapper. We also helped put decals on the community centre next door to our school where he collided (although I know better now that decals are not that effective and to use dots like from Feather Friendly). In urban areas especially we need to show the kids that animals are our neighbours and we owe it to them to keep their environment safe and free of hazards.

Wow, I am so shocked by how much fishing line Jon found and removed. Insane. Thank you to Jon and TWC, for saving this beautiful owl. Having it suspended by its wing like that I initially thought that wing would be useless, but pleasantly surprised to see this sweet owl is hopefully going to be released back into the wild. Nothing short of miraculous. I shudder to think what would have happened had Jon not passed by... Thank you also to Jon for sharing his experience with his students and others... a lot of it is ignorance and not realizing the impact our actions have; education and awareness is key, and I think that's exactly what these videos do. Thank you, TWC, for creating and putting out these videos each week. They really do educate and inform how to prevent harm to wildlife. I used one of your videos to convince my father to not use a glue trap... he was planning on using it for mice in his garage and I showed him your video of the bunny that had been caught in one... he was shocked and heartbroken by what he saw and understood the real impact these horrid traps have... Without the video, I don't think he'd have changed his mind. Thanks again.

I am shocked by the amount of fishing line he recovered! This is such a good lesson in being observant to your surroundings and taking action when it's needed. What a wonderful role model he is for his students, and the rest of us watching this story.

Well done to everyone. John should not have cut the line but I can understand the desperate feeling of wanting to do something! But he did, he called for rescuers. It would have been a different story if he had cut the line and the owl somehow flown a distance or something, so not the best idea. But it turned out good in the end and hopefully the owl will recover well. The amount of fishing line though, my word.... You have to ask yourself if people just deliberately do this, if they run around unreeling fishing line as they run around the field or something... Seeing the cruelty that people have done towards animals, it would not surprise me in the least. And how sad is that?

Hi @fvulpe9503 Luckily in this situation the owl wasn't harmed after the line was cut, but TWC always recommends contacting a wildlife rehabilitator for expert guidance on how to safely help wildlife in urgent cases like these before taking action.

I love the fact that he saved the owl! I will be forever plagued by this question: Why did he have a razor blade with him? :p
