We also tested everything from the cheapest solution to the most expensive. And some of it is Extremely expensive. But we did not see a great enough Improvement per the cost of the top rated ultrasonic tank Solutions. So we stuck with something that you can get in just about any normal store or online. And it works great, you can use about between 2% - 10% mix ratio, depending on how bad the item is your working on, but it does fine. And we use ours all the time.

I bought that same utlrasonic last fall. I couldn't find any of the Simple Green Aircraft Extreme which is supposed to be safe for aluminum. The only thing I could find locally was Krud Kutter degreaser. It worked ok on some really grimey brake calipers and master cylinder. I had to dump it and store it for the winter and haven't had any projects to use it for lately, Krud Kutter also makes a Parts Washer formula that I'll probably try when I run out of this current bottle.

I bought one to clean my CB750 carbs. It does a really nice job. Better than I thought it would. I think I paid 200 bucks for mine and probably could have gone with a smaller unit. I used some of the purple colored simple green, but I got some slight discoloration in the metal. Vapor blasting got them looking like new. Lately I've been using some Pinesol, but I haven't had anything too crusty to clean. I chuck all of my jets and emulsion tubes in the ultrasonic anytime I have the carbs off the bike.

Shane, I’ve been using U/S cleaners for years restoring motorcycle carbs and parts. I use 2 solutions. Simple Green Precision Aircraft diluted 13:1 does a great job and is aluminum safe. Also, mineral spirits does an excellent job too and will not darken aluminum, zinc, or pot metal. Heat is your friend, especially with mineral spirits. Beware of ‘purple’ or Super Clean cleaners as they are very caustic and eat aluminum. Ask me how I know...

I agree with the second suggestion since it is an oil based solvent and in chemistry like dissolves like. Aluminum is a group 3 metal, using water based detergeants will react with the natural oxide layer in aluminums and can degrade and etch the metal in part due to the alkalinity. Use oil based solvents only and preferably ones safe for nitrile and viton rubber compounds and plastics. 2-butoxyethanol is safe and comes publicly available in Berrymans. Or there is mineral spirits or Seafoam. The key here is to not use water based solutions period.
@btinaustin
@btinaustin 3 жыл бұрын
@@kineticmoto8813 I agree that oil based is optimal. Two things to clarify though; 1) Not everyone wants or can use an oil based cleaner, and in that case the SG Precision Aircraft (at proper dilution) is a good alternative. 2) Look closely at Berrymans SDS sheets of their various products, very few contain 2-butoxyethanol (and in small percentages) and some that do include it are water based. I prefer oil based solvents/cleaners like mineral sprits, Crown PSC-1000, CRC 05067, etc.

I like to use Gunk Carburetor Parts Cleaner in my 3L ultrasonic cleaner. It does an amazing job, but if possible don’t put gaskets or rubber o-rings in it (you’ll be sorry). Rinse all parts and openings (small holes) with water followed by compressed air. Gunk Carburetor Parts Cleaner will need to drained and strained every once in a while but it is reusable as long as it is clean. You should remove any exterior dirt from parts prior to putting into ultrasonic cleaner. I started out with smaller (jewelry cleaner) version. It worked ok, but timer was too short and I didn’t like using same cleaner for my jewelry and for my carburetors. FYI: don’t let temp in cleaner get too hot because Gunk Carburetor Parts Cleaner is flammable. I typically use about 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

A Ziploc bag vibrates like crazy too for tiny parts. I remember a carb cleaner from the mid 70's that came in a tin can with a screen. You just put your parts inside and tapped the lid on for the night. It was quite a surprise seeing the perfectly new looking aluminum, brass, and stainless steel. Never saw the product available again. I can't even remember what it smelt like. The only way we could get it was mail order but when you're growing up with a Sears catalog in the outhouse it's hard to say what normal might be for most people. Have you tried 60khz or 68khz for cleaning the smaller passageways. I had some luck with both but could only tell by the residue left in the Ziploc bag. Some containers don't like to wiggle back and forth and some develop harmonics and crack up pronto. The fun part is the experimenting. Thanks for sharing.

@@How2Wrench You can leave water in your tank and add solvent or detergent along with the parts to a Ziploc bag. If I understand you correctly the Ziploc bag needs a liquid to move the waves to the cleanees. If you leave a little air it can keep the.... patient off the cage so bad luck doesn't get involved. recently bought a 10L version for a carb that had had a couple years of dried hard fuel scum…they float needle valve was and the float pin were seized solid…. Watched many youtube videos of how people used their machine and what cleaner… Dismantled the carb into jets/bowl/body and put them in separate glass jars in the basket and surrounded by water. I initially used gas/petrol as I saw someone had good luck with it and it seemed logical…but after 3 rounds of 15-30mins hardly any scum moved… Next I tried a 50/50 mix of white (4%) vinegar and water…tried the float bowl first and to my relief the fuel scum started to lift in 5mins and after the 15min cycle 95% had lifted.. The carb body was next with the 50/50 white vinegar mix and the same results with the fuel scum with it loosening the float pin free and valve sliding out…the only negative was the carb body started to discolour a little…where as the float bowl didn’t….i presume that theres a different mix of alloys in the body compared to the float bowl. Anyway the results…the now clean carb was installed on the bike and she fired up for the first time in 3yrs and runs just like it should….i was about to give up on the carb with the canned carb cleaner doing nothing and buying a $700 aftermarket carb….so for $100 the ultrasonic cleaner was well worth the small spend!

Why people think it’s ok to use water based detergeants on metal parts I’ll never know... oil based solvents or 2-Butoxyethanol is the proper way to clean metal parts including carburetors. Used in the aerospace industry and still safe on plastics and certain rubber compounds. Berrymans solution contains 2-Butoxyethanol or you can use Seafoam if you don’t have access to commercial grade solvents. And DO NOT use the Gunk brand carb cleaner it will destroy plastics and rubbers.

Thank you for a detailed comment. Here is some feedback as to "Why people think" anything....after 15 years teaching, training and much self reflection, we are all a product of what we learned somewhere. I "try" not to shame anyone with what comes to us as "standard knowledge" and just share my knowledge to which I even get schooled at times. I remember everyone has a "first day". All I can hope for is we can reduce the WTF days...lol Thanks for chiming in...Shane Thank you for commenting. Want more benefits? Smash the subscribe button and bell! Want even more??? I have been using mine for 4 years as a service. I use dawn dish soap with lemi shine to adjust the ph. For tougher grime I use a citrus cleaner Acidity is what in my trials has darkened aluminum. Try using a glass jar for small parts, and let me know if you find a difference. I found the plastic absorbs ultrasonicsonic waves, thus transfering less sonic energy to the parts needing to be cleaned. (Imo) I love your content.

I use gasoline, cheap and extremely effective, I have a safe area away from the building outside with a fire extinguisher for gas nearby, it is safe on carbs and does a hell of a good job cleaning them, they will look brand new, after a cycle I shut the power off to the machine and then approach it, compared to other products on the shelf gas is the way to go price per gallon wise, it's safe and effective in my experience on carburetors just exercise extreme caution for obvious reasons.

Thanks for sharing. We have heard of two of you using gasoline. I think most people just are not comfortable with it. And as you stated very well, you must use extreme caution and its not very convenient for a shop to move it in and out of the building or to have to monitor it. The product I mainly use is very affordable and works for multiple cleaning cycles. BUT I HAVE TO ADMIT....I'm soooooo curious how fuel would do...🤔 My problem is I could never risk doing a video on it as some fool would blow themselves up and blame youtube...lol Awesome and thanks for commenting! I hope you realize the ultrasonic cleaner atomizes and heats up liquids! It's precisely how some humidifiers and fog machines work. The transducers are piezoelectric and can arc even when not plugged in. A fire isn't what you should be worried about. How about being engulfed in a fireball?

Before the neutering of carb cleaners the glorious Hydro Seal by Gunk (NOT the feeble Hydro-Seal II shit) used methylene chloride and it was magnificent. Today you can still buy methylene chloride as powder coat stripper but it can only be sold to businesses so you'll need to be one or have a bro who will order it and send a copy of their W9 tax form. It is not cheap but it works very, very well. Wear gloves and use in a well ventilated shop environment. Keep the container sealed.

No no no, first off vinegar is highly acidic it does react with aluminum whilst it doesn’t rust, it does etch it and can leave a residue and corrode the natural oxide layer. Second DO NOT USE water based solvents on group 3 based metals. Like dissolves like in chemistry. Use an oil based solvent only.
