Andrew talks with Claver Harper of National AV Solutions about the fine art of Cinema.
We discuss how fortunate we are to be able to own these Masterpieces worth millions of dollars, how not to take them for granted and the way we can best extract the incredible detail that is engineered into these productions.
Our goal is to design build and deliver the best cinematic experience available. Experiences designed to exceed anything you can see at a commercial cinema.
The highest form of cinema is now available in your home, your business, your yacht and your hotel. Wherever you want Private Cinema the skills and technology now exist to produce results that are hard to imagine unless you have experienced it.

I think a rising tide lifts all boats. If the premium gear is getting better, the average gear is also much improved over what we enjoyed a few years ago. Would love to see that Barco in action.

A great statement and yet not perhaps an obvious thought so thanks for pointing that out. I think it is certainly true and yes ultimately everyone benefits as products improve the still great gear that gets sold on is more accessible to others. Thanks for pointing this out.

I'm honestly happy for anyone who can afford a Cinema 1 level Home Cinema for themselves, but for the majority of us, the goal is to achieve the best results within our mostly limited budgets... Whether it's $5k or $50k, if you get everything setup properly, it's still a huge leap over just watching on a TV with a sound bar, like how the vast majority of people experience movies at home. And I know that with my "entry level" Sony 1080p projector(projecting on a small 92" screen), that I'm still missing out on a "true Cinema experience", but I still get a huge smile on my face when I watch one of my favorite movies and/or demo scenes in Dolby Atmos, so that's all that really matters at the end of the day... And also being able to have that smile AND still have money in my bank account because I didn't mortgage my house for a $100k projector! ; ) Cheers guys!

Thanks for the comment and we totally agree. We don’t all live in mansions or drive exotic cars but our goal is to help people get the most out of any system. With the right application of principles it can be done at any budget. Most cinemas these days are still 2K and run at 14 ft lamberts so replicating that at home is not an impossible task with a bit of clever thinking and budgeting. There are more and more excellent 2nd hand projectors coming onto the market as those that can upgrade to laser etc. As you say as long as it puts a smile on your face then that’s all that counts. We hope our videos help anyone get better results at any price point. What is interesting is the difference in attitudes and comments when we talk about or review high end cinemas and gear vs shows that talk about high end cars and yet it is easier, less expensive and far more achievable to get close to high end cinema than it ever is to upgrade or trade up a car to supercar performance and a damn site safer :-)

@@HomeTheatreEngineering Safer indeed! And I am looking to upgrade my projector to a laser light one in the next year, but first I want to increase my screen size and possibly go to a 2.35:1 ratio, so I'm already doing research on throw distances for use in my smaller size room. 3.3m W x 5.4m L x only 2.03m H

Very excellent discussion guys, I really enjoyed listening to this!!! I have a story that leads into a question, if you have the time... So 20 years ago I purchased a significantly higher quality AVR and speaker system then what I had before and my expectation was that it would make all my music sound better... But over time I learned that having higher quality equipment simply highlights the quality of the source material... So that if I played something that had a high quality recording, then it sounded even more amazing than I was used to. But if the source material had a lower quality recording, then the higher quality equipment would almost make it sound worse than I was used to, because I guess I was hearing more of the flaws of the recording??? So my question is, do you experience anything like what I described when watching movies in Cinema 1? For example, does it highlight the flaws of a bad digital transfer and/or obvious green screen effects, or somehow improve upon the image, when compared to what most people see on lower end equipment??? I've always wondered this, so I'll appreciate it if you respond! Thx

Brilliant comment and yes I would have to agree. It’s like looking through a microscope and it certainly can reveal flaws and even production details like bad makeup or even the switch between shots where something has noticeable changed. I guess it’s perhaps like trying to drive a supercar down a rough dirt road when it’s built for the track. So the pros and cons here… con yes you do see the flaws but you do also tend to want to watch better produced content to some degree and on the pro side I think this has massively elevated the art. Just look at sound and image quality of movies today vs many years ago however no amount a production quality can hide a bad plot or bad script writing, acting or directing ! There is however a beauty in watching a classic old movie perhaps like a black and white Hitchcock etc and despite the quality of the day it can still be an astoundingly good experience. Your comment is spot on, a great observation and a topic well worth talking about ..Thanks so much

@@HomeTheatreEngineering Thanks so much for the reply! I've had this "hypothesis" in my mind for many years, so it's nice to finally have it confirmed by a professional! Also, I think this would make for a good video topic, because even though it makes perfect sense that higher quality equipment wouldn't just magically make everything sound and look amazing, I bet most people assume that it would. Personally when I think about this topic, Jurassic Park immediately comes to mind, because it was a big budget movie that never looked that great on home video, so that might make for an interesting test study...
