Great Video from all. Very informative and great humility from all. I work with HTE and Barco products, so it's great to see such videos being produced. Keep up the great work HTE 👍

Great video guys!! I wish you'd do a video on the Barco Medea. Unless I'm missing something, this looks like a fantastic projector option from Barco at a somewhat reasonable (for high-end) price. You don't get the 5K option as you do on the Medea's bigger siblings, but there are many other quality features available.

I love Barco products and use them at work however I find it funny they they promote accuracy in numbers by using ANSI contrast measurements but don't use ANSI as their preferred measurement for LUMENS making them appear brighter than their competitors. Some great info in this video, keep up the great work.

Hi Jamie, Barco Residential do detail both contrast and lumens in ANSI on their website, spec sheets etc.

@@indigosix7522 I'm well aware that they provide full specs, it's more about how they advertise their numbers. They don't advertise the same way as others by using ANSI Lumens as the default comparative reference.

@@jedik206 I work for a company that represents Barco Residential in the APAC region and we always refer to ANSI lumens and ANSI contrast. In Residential we only talk in ANSI for both...at all times. If anything, I find the severe reverse with a lot of other residential brands, some which do not even quote ANSI for either...
@jedik206
@jedik206 2 жыл бұрын
@@indigosix7522 Fair call, most of my experience I'll be honest is on their commercial and event side where they are the opposite to most companies with head line details. They do provide all the specs once you drill down but not always upfront.

As we all know the achiles hill of all DLP projectors, no matter how good they are, is the APL in very dark scenes where low native contrast is pretty low. However the competition, Christie, managed to do something amazing with their flagship model, the Christie Eclipse, by introducing the 6 chip DLP where 3 are used for colors and 3 are used for local dimming, thus increasing the low APL performance by a lot. Does Barco have a simmilar solution in their pocket?

Hi George, From what I understand, Barco has had 6 RGB lasers out for years now in their Thor and Thor+ native 4k units. The Freya and Freya+ are direct derivatives of Thor and Thor+, taking this technology and native 4k to a level unseen before at this price point. Barco Residential talk about their flow down technology system in the video. For Pulse Platform projectors, Dynablack has been released, first in the Njord, Njord CS late last year, now the newly released Hodr and Hodr CS and soon the other models in the range. The black elements are very well detailed and discussed in the video. Its worth a watch as it demystifies a lot of mis information there is in the market about blacks, contrast, luminance etc. Just to note on top of this, Freya is 98.5% of Rec2020 and Thor is 100% of Rec2020...FYI. The video also talks about the Image Puzzle. This will provide valuable knowledge as to what makes a projector image great in its totality. Has the Eclipse been released? It's been on the cards for release for many years but nothing so far from what i can see. I am sure as it's from Christie it will be a very good projector. One thing to note, Barco has had a full department focused purely on residential applications for close to 10 years now. The R&D, engineering and ability to draw their high experience from many years of development in other markets and industries makes Barco Residential unique for Private Home Cinema. It goes well beyond just producing great blacks 😊

6P is very different to what the Eclipse is doing. 6P just means 6 primary colour lasers, so one for each eye which results in better 3D. It still uses only 3 DLP chips though. The Eclipse uses 6 DLP chips. 3 x 4k for the image pixels, 3 x 1080p for the local dimming/light control. It's pretty amazing technology and there's someone on avsforum who recently had it installed in their home. It allows for far better contrast than any other projector out there. Of course, the Eclipse also hits 100% Rec.2020 From what I've read, Christie has either a patent or some sort of trade secret that allows this to work without too much light loss.

@@rhiannoneldridge1007 it's interesting as their paperwork says approaching full REC2020... It's definitely a different kind of beast. Thor and Thor+ definitely focus more on the 3D element but the 6RGB is also beneficial for other things not just 3D. These units have also been out for over 7 years and whilst typical Barco Residential, they continually update the units (so if you bought one 7 years ago, that unit can be upgraded to the same as one coming of the production line today). It is also fully DCI compliant. Could not see (and I may have missed this) that the Eclipse is. I suppose it depends on what you are after at this level. It will be interesting as to what Barco Residential comes out with next. They have been very busy over the past 24 months releasing the award winning Bragi and Bragi CS, Hodr and Hodr CS, Njord and Njord CS, Freya, Freya AE, Freya+ and Freya+ AE, along with Dynablack technology. That is quite a range of specifically engineered projectors for the Private Home Cinema market at various price points.

Geez! Don’t make it sound like if you don’t buy a Barco that you have to update every year.
@HomeTheatreEngineering
@HomeTheatreEngineering 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Craig that’s not what we were saying at all in fact the opposite. Or do you mean upgrade instead of update? What we were referring to his the limiting of some products where the software is on chip vs fpga capabilities where we are not limited to minor changes but that major changes can be pushed to products to introduce new capabilities that are harder for many production line products to achieve. We see this all the time now and Trinnov is a good example. An 8 year old Trinnov is still valid today with software updates an 8 year old anthem or Denon is not. Then add HDMI board upgradability and your investment stays relevant. So we stand by these comments but we weren’t implying you have to upgrade “all the time” but you have to admit between signal changes, hdmi and content changes HD to UHD and codec changed to DTS-X pro and more to come the obsolescence of products has not been slow in recent years. Doesn’t mean they don’t work, does mean they are not current.

@@HomeTheatreEngineering I meant upgrade. I had a JVC RS540 for about 4 years that I’m sure I could have got more out of but I wanted something with native 4K so I upgraded to a JVC laser phosphor unit the RS3100.

@@andrewpoole4878 four years is the shortest period I owned a projector. Most every other unit I have owned has been 5-6 years. Things have changed significantly in the last 4 years. Native 4K 3-chip units were north of $30k and most 4K units were pixel shifters. New JVC can do full 8K with eshiftX. And I highly doubt film content will be 8K anytime soon. So unless I have major problems with this JVC I will be using it for 8-9 years minimum.
@andrewpoole4878
@andrewpoole4878 2 жыл бұрын
@@craigwhitcher9629 I fully understand. With regard to the JVC though while it can eshift to 8K it cannot receive an 8K signal so it has to internally upscale everything.. ? I agree we will not see 8K content any time soon. We have a very long way to go to get 4K right and getting full primary and secondary gain for P3 is still a distance away for some and 2020 a long way for most. But its getting there..Enjoy.
