Plagued by routing issues that have caused us to backtrack a couple of times, we find ourselves deep in remote backcountry with gasoline running low. The decision is made to split up yet again so I can make a fuel run into the nearest town, which, it turns out, is further away than we believed.
This episode includes a lot of driving, a bit of wildlife, and an unexpected hike.

Try not to run a fuel tank below 1/4 full. The fuel pump uses immersion in fuel to help keep it cool. Every time it's exposed, it causes undue heat and wear and reduces its potential life cycle.

So I bought Gaia GPS because of you and Coyote Works. I have many miles mapped. There are some nice static overlays, but I am not overly enamored with any of them. When I go to OHV Parks, I usually use Maprika. While Onyx is more expensive, I am seriously considering switching as it seem to be more off road oriented. Opinions?
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest Жыл бұрын
I haven't used those other apps so I can't provide any opinion. I've never heard of Maprika but don't spend much time in OHV parks anyway. After Gaia released its new "Overland" topo map this year, I've pretty much stopped using other layers, though occasionally I'll use historic layers when researching a trip. Gaia does what I need it to do, I like the ability to plan my routes and waypoints on my computer and have them populate onto my mobile devices (perhaps those other apps do that as well, I don't know). For the type of travel I do, Gaia has been working well for me. I do have some friends who use and enjoy Onyx, though I think they use it as a supplement to Gaia. It's good that there are numerous options out there so each person can choose whatever is the best fit for them.

So overlanding to me and most videos share is 90% driving and 10% actual camping. I guess that what it represents exploring via vehicles. I enjoy more 50/50. I've had friends drive 10 hours for two night camping and driving back. That ratio just doesn't work for me. I enjoy 3/4 hour drive then some hiking to drum up some appetite then a great dinner. I am sorry, but this just looks like suffering. I can't imagine driving that much for a night here and there camping. I do enjoy blm land and federal land camping and some 4x4. Just how I do it. Totally hear you, to each their own! Personally I get bored at camp, I much prefer being on the move, discovering hidden gems, and seeing new vistas. Honestly I was never a huge fan of camping until I developed a taste for exploring the backcountry, and camping simply became a necessity because these places are too far from home and I gotta sleep sometimes. 🙂 Everyone should enjoy the outdoors in the way that makes the most sense to them.👍

Donald, I have NO knowledge of drones and what they are capable of, so with that said, is it possible to check the drone's last known GPS location and coordinate that to a ground search? I'm sure if you guys could, you would have, so I guess my next ignorant ? would be is, do they make drones that send back to the control;er it's location so it can be found by GPS? Even if the coordinates only were accurate within "X" feet at least you'd have a good area to start searching. Although it's far away from the rest of us sitting in our chairs comfortably at home wishing we too were with all of you.... (that was a mouth full) how many hours did you look for the drone? Do you think if you had more time you would have found it? And lastly, have you ever thought about going back to look again? If so, would you want any of your audience to help you guys find the the drone? Love the channel, thanks for sharing the awesomeness with this fat old grump!!! Hersh

Perhaps I didn't make it clear enough in the video, but that's exactly what we were doing at 15:01 - Shi had the last known GPS coordinates of the drone which we used to guide our searching. The story of the lost drone is not entirely over as it turns out. More on that in an upcoming video. :-)

I have loved your videos forever! Your forester inspired my build for my overland vehicle to take to college out of state. I just posted a short 6 min video for a class, about overlanding and my car, and shouted you out. I'd love if you checked it out!

The source for all my music is artlist.io. No need to hunt...at the very bottom of the descriptions of most of my adventure episodes, you will find a list of music credits. :-)

You need to make your videos a little longer. I really enjoy watching them but they are over too quickly.

For every person who asks for longer videos, I've got someone else telling me they're too long. * shrug * The length depends on what actually happens and logical story arcs. Sometimes that means 15 minutes, sometimes that means 30 minutes. I had more footage, I could have made this longer, but it would have been empty minutes...I try to only use content that truly advances the story. In this day of people more commonly consuming 15-second videos than 15-minute videos, keeping an audience retained for longer than five to seven minutes is a challenge. Viewership drops WAY off when videos stretch up past 20 minutes, and I can't afford to take these trips and make these videos if people don't watch. :-)

@@softroadingthewest thank you for taking the time to explain some of the challenges of being a content creator. You have a great channel, keep up the good work. I always look forward to more!

Use your drone to search for the other one.

The first drone was lost because he flew it behind that rock and the connection dropped. No one had any desire to repeat that.😆 In any case, even if we could have done a flyover, trying to distinguish a drone that is about the same size, shape and color of the endless loose rock up there while looking at a small controller screen is an exercise in futility. You'd have to fly dangerously close to scrutinize the 10,000 stones that look like drone bodies, plus there were countless cracks, crevices, grasses & bushes you wouldn't be able to see into anyway. We all sit on our butts driving our rigs all day, a little exercise was good for us. 😄
