You guys were travelling farther downstream, towards the reservoir/dam. A drought year also. I bet on a year with decent/good rainfall those fords would be unpassable even in the Fall months. I loved watching the series, especially from multiple viewpoints!

Excellent job on this series ... I've lived here for 30 years and just made it down to Birch Creek. We contemplated that final crossing at the ranch but we were told it ended up at more or less an impassable rock obstacle. You guys have proven that inaccurate.

I have to say thanks to my buddy Vlad for telling me about your channel, watched Jason's few times before, will check out Shi's but yours been useful. Being on the West side of Oregon, Eastern side is further out from "weekend" exploring, so now time comes - Owyhee this spring, gotta catch up to those lost summer camps by my buddies who do it annually at the reservoir. Great editing and footage, thanks for sharing! May be one day we "snow camp" together :)

As an ole mountaineer id call that scree. Talus is usually bigger. The sound of the temper of the rock is cool.

Haha, I literally spent 20 minutes researching that 2-second blurb of voiceover. I initially was going to call it scree but wanted to be sure I was using the term correctly, because ole mountaineer I am not. 😂 I found lots of varying opinions - which is why I ultimately used both words. 😏 I did most consistently read that in strict geological definition, scree is truly small, gravel-sized rock and anything larger is talus, but in practical usage, I have most commonly heard what we encountered here called scree.

I spent 3 days camped there back in June and there wasn't another soul around. Awesome! I think those old, cut stone buildings out there in the middle of nowhere are amazing.

I often wonder why expensive drones tend to be black or colors that are difficult to see when out in nature. Hot Pink sticks out like a sore thumb and would make them easier to see at a distance.

Agreed. After the experiences on this trip, I'm planning to paint my drone in some obnoxious fluorescent color. Mine has an earthy sandy color that blends into absolutely every natural environment, LOL.

I use the HF blanket, one in each of my trucks, in case of emergency. On the hwy or trails, you just never know!

Hey, tell Jason to try putting some painters/masking tape over the SD card. its easy to remove, and it should protect the card from just popping out.

@@budnixon Agreed, I personally wouldn't trek out there in spring. In addition to high river levels, there are more chances of the roads being wet. The mud out there can be particularly treacherous.

@@softroadingthewest gotta look for that dry time - couple of weeks of good spring time weather should take care of things. Seems like Owyhee is best to be crossed under 200CFS water flow (if I'm reading my numbers right) - in comparison what we did last fall. Thanks for input!

I took it off in August in preparation for testing out a camper for a while. That ended up not working out for a number of reasons, but I was very busy and ran out of time to re-install it before this trip (which was back in October). Thanks for watching! 🙂

That footage is basically all shot, I still need to put it together. I'll have it out soon, just had some other videos I needed to release sooner. Won't be this weekend, I've got something else in the works. Maaybe the weekend of New Years. To be honest though, it's unlikely to be hugely helpful because what I did may prove difficult to reproduce (you'll understand when you see the video) and also it's FAR from perfect, but hopefully seeing my approach may at least stimulate some creative DIY thinking. And yes, it's secured to the utilitrack. :-)

There were a few deep spots in a couple of the crossings that might have been a little much for the Forester, and there were a few spots - mostly on my solo gas run day - where I put the truck into 4-low to crawl up some gnarly rocky stuff which would've required more of a risky momentum approach in the Forester. An experienced driver in a lifted, skid-plated Subaru with good tires could probably handle it all. I would never tackle something like this solo in a Subaru, and a couple of those crossings I would not even attempt solo in the Frontier.

I have been using their -15 bag for a few years now. Love it! It is a bit bulky but I have plenty of room for it.

I still have it, but the Coleman 0° bag is quite a bit warmer, so I opt for that when I expect to be truly cold. When I got the Guide Gear bag, I was actually attempting to purchase their -15° bag George (SW Idaho) mentioned in his reply (on his recommendation), but they were out of stock and offered to send me this instead. I was about to leave on the 2020 eastern Oregon trip with Jason and was hoping not to be in my mummy bag, so I took it. It's definitely more comfortable to be in than the Coleman as it's roomier and it's also flannel-lined, so I still like it for chilly nights, but in frigid temps, I'm happy to have the Coleman. 🙂

Oh no, it's not staying like this...I'm SO over messing around with the tent, especially after my experience in Idaho that next night, LOL. I had intended to have the canopy back on the truck before this trip but was super busy and just ran out of time to re-install my setup.

This is largely Jason's baby. It is an extension/continuation from his Bend > Alvord route. While I was a little more actively involved in planning last year's leg, this year's segment was planned by Jason. I believe his intent is to put it all together and make it available on his website, where you can already access the Bend>Alvord route. There is some work to be done processing what worked and didn't work last year, and what worked/didn't work this year, and pull it together into something cohesive.

Yes. It's on the dry side of the state so I don't think it gets heavy snowfall like in the Cascades, but it's high desert and the winters are very cold.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Some advantages of the Gazelle tent are that it costs a lot less, I can stand up and move around inside, and I can pitch it wherever I want...I don't necessarily have to sleep where I park the truck. Disadvantages of the tent include setup/breakdown time (mainly an issue if you do overland travel like me with a new campsite every single day), handling a wet, icy or muddy tent in the winter, needing to set it up in the garage back at home to let it dry out if it gets wet, and windy nights can be an issue. Advantages of the truck topper include being very very weatherproof - I sleep well on windy nights because I have nothing to worry about and get gently rocked to sleep. My bed is already set up when I roll into camp. On a late night, I can just park, get in the back and go to sleep. All my stuff -clothes, etc is already in there so there's not the twice-daily transfer of everything from truck to tent. Disadvantages include cost, not being able to fully stand up, and lack of aerodynamics.
