Oxalis triangularis care and repot- purple shamrock - butterfly plant
Grab your own Oxalis here: geni.us/OxalisTriangularis
This has been on my wish list for some time so I was very pleased to pick this up from Nell & Green Botanics my local Houseplant store yesterday.
So today we are going to take a look at this beautiful plant and go over some care tips for it, and also repot it, not because it needs it, it should be fine in here for a while but just because I have a nice for it and I want it to look nice!
This is actually quite an interesting houseplant, and one of my favourite parts of this houseplant hobby for me is learning about the new plants I buy and this one is a good example because unlike many houseplants it actually likes to be on the cooler side and loves the bright light so it’s like the opposite to many houseplant species! Most houseplants can’t get too cold, or not too bright etc, this one will actually prefer the cooler temps so if you have a colder spot in your house, porch or conservatory then this might be a good option.
I love the delicate look of the leaves, especially the variegated version that has even deeper red markings on it so I’m still looking out for one of those, let me know if you have one you want to donate to the channel!
Care Guide:
Origin: Brazil
Can go inside or outside even in the UK, just not frost hardy
Light - bright sunny spot - also semi-shade is also fine.
Water - regularly - a few times a week but let it dry out a little before watering again. Less water in the winter.
Temp - cooler temps 15c -20c 60f - 80f doesn’t’ like temps over 25c or 77f
Special Note: Oxalis can occasionally go dormant in the winter - not every year but if it dies back and looks like it's dead, don’t throw it away! They do this to regain energy, just stop the watering at this point, wait until the leaves all die back and cut them off and in a few months, it will spring back into life with renewed health and vigour!
Many people will assume that they have killed their Oxalis and throw it away! I’m sure many perfectly healthy plants have been check in the trash needlessly over the years people have been keeping these as houseplants, so just hold onto yours if it dies back - it is important to stop the watering though, because if it’s not active it’s not taking up any water and it will just sit there and rot the plant and then it really will die! So just leave it alone and it will come back when it's ready!

I was just as excited to find one as you! I’ve had my purple shamrock in a whiskey barrel planter with some annuals out in the crazy desert weather of Las Vegas since February. It’s been through 30 degrees Fahrenheit to 95 degrees this week. It’s taking it like a champ! I might try to bring in a clump over the summer though because almost nothing survives July here besides true desert plants. Thanks for your videos I’ve learned a lot for my indoor plants.

Wow! They must be strong! Good idea to bring some in, just in case the weather wipes it out, from what I understand it really can't handle the high heat so better be safe. Good luck. Andy

Hey Mr. Mouse how's it going? Oh just having a snack eating this Gouda cheese. Mr Mouse, that's not cheese that's an Oxalis plant. You mean it's not green Gouda cheese - it's triangle shaped like cheese. Nope, that's a plant! Ewww! Puh-too! Puh-too! Poor Mr. Mouse. ( Hi Andy - yes I saw the nice comment LOL!) 🏘🐀🧀

I have had the green and the purple ( with red) for years. They are extremely hardy👍 So when I transplant them they seem to die off at first , but within 2-3 weeks they are big and bushy again with flowers . They seem to flower most of the year. They do go through a dormant stage( as you stated) and then come back with lots of flowers. I have my green ones outside. They die back in snow or cold but come right back in spring. They also spread a lot to other plants. ( even indoors I have the purple ones in a lot of my other houseplants ...& I didn’t put them there ) Love your videos! 🌿

That's great! I love the idea of having these growing under some of my taller houseplants, I think it would look great! Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. Andy

Nice one. Just subbed and then planted my oxalis so we'll see how well it does in my menagerie. How many leaves does an average bulb produce? I only have five so another dozen may help.

Interesting video. I've got the same plant and I find she's easy maintenance. I'm scared to repot it cause every plant I've repotted always dies. I really need help 🤣😭

I’m able to have these in the yard, they die back after a frost but always come back and spread, considered a weed in some areas. I find the leaves delicate and will burn in direct sunlight but I just snap them down to the ground and they ALWAYS grow back! I can’t kill them, when I put them in pots I always cut everything off and let it flush back with new growth. They don’t mind drying out and will wilt and always bounce back when watered in my experience.

They are pretty tough so a repot should be fine. there is no reason why repotted plants should die unless too much of the root is damaged or incorrect soil used. Be sure to check the right amount of watering for each plant also.

That's good to know, I have also found that if they get dry they can wilt and then pop straight back up after watering. Fun little plants!
