The fact that both rugger codes no longer use a football is another point. The bias against people wanting to earn money from playing a sport no longer exists. In my opinion the FA should return to calling it by its original name football.

My teacher went to Oxford Brookes and she confirms that people do this a lot. Lol

Cambridge entry requirements for courses are a bit insane. You have to be a next level genius to get through the entry requirements. If I work like a maniac I could probably meet the entry requirements for Oxford as they are a bit reasonable. I don't understand how Cambridge has harder requirements and higher acceptance rate at the same time

Achyuth Thouta I don’t quite remember cause it’s been a while since I applied for unis, but I think it’s that Oxford relies on interview more than Cambridge does. I feel like that makes sense cause (at least in my mind) I see Cambridge as being more sciency and Oxford more humanities (though obviously they’re both great at everything), but in that regard it’d make sense for Oxford to be more reliant on interviews.

The mystique of both to the general public is a little insane. Oxford's a rather workmanlike city in structure to my eyes - it's no York for tourists (although it does have some attractive small hotels close by) - and Cambridge wasn't even a city until the 1950s. They loom so high in the imagination partly because of their architecture - and here's my issue. Who designed and built that architecture? Not Oxbridge students most of the time I'd wager. So a large part of Oxbridge mystique rests on something that its people had little or nothing to do with. A certain percentage of Oxbridge staff, and a lower percentage of Oxbridge students, are actually stunningly clever. The rest simply had higher grades or higher aptitude than the average person WHO APPLIED there. There is a myth that the most intelligent people mostly want to go to Oxbridge. No - some very clever people are very urbane in the fullest sense i.e. they like the buzz and flow and industry and cosmopolitanism of the urban- these people might have a London university or Birmingham, Manchester, as their first choice. Being so popular can have its drawbacks - you attract the people who prize cachet over the actual experience. You attract dull workhorses who hit what they need by hook or by crook but who don't actually seem to engage with where they are - they might as well be on a distance learning course. The best students are those who engage with the environment and the actual history and personality of a place. A great student should become indisposable to that place, and the place should become indisposable to the student. I don't believe that Oxbridge, because of its history and its fame, makes it possible for students to ever be regarded as a true part of it.

If you are bored in Cambridge just come down Arbury I think the getting stabbed threats will keep you very interested.

@@madeupname3008 A valid question! Purely a matter of circumstance and personal preference. The college that offered me a place was the single ugliest and least welcoming place I've ever been to. You could *feel* the pressure in there. It probably didn't help that it was a cold winter's day and that I was feeling sick with nerves during my interview, but Newcastle was everything Cambridge wasn't (or at least showed itself to be that day). Newcastle is vibrant, modern, urban, vast, dynamic, supportive... I could go on! But for me the most important bit was that I escaped the infamous 'Oxbridge bubble', which is very difficult to leave; students henceforth find it tricky to adapt to the non-Oxbridge world. My judgement was probably conveniently reaffirmed by the fact that some of my friends (we all went through Oxbridge application together) *did* accept, and became rather aloof, distant, and utterly blind to anything that wasn't Oxbridge-related. I just... don't think Cambridge was for me. Universities have personalities too, and Cambridge's did not click with mine.

I did similarly (not for Cambridge, but still a prestigious uni), and don't regret it for a second. I think I would have become elitist, career-driven, and rather unhappy if I'd gone. Instead I've enjoyed studying in my home country, with a part-time job I love, great friends, time to pursue creative writing, and my parents are okay with me aiming to be an academic, rather than a politician or a lawyer :)

My mate got rejected from Cambridge but got into LSE so. Still an amazing place to study.

Be wary of London unis. They have incredibly high living costs and low student satisfaction. LSE and imperial are obviously incredible unis but if you have the option for oxbridge go for it.
