Cadillac STS V8 | How To Fix Your Transmission Drive Shaft From Clunking

My Cadillac transmission shifts very smooth now without a shudder or vibration coming from the transmission. I had my rear differential bushing replaced and the drive shaft center support replaced.
Now my Cadillac STS drives and shifts like a Cadillac should. All the power is there as soon as I press on the gas pedal. There is no more clunking or hard shifting.

shelly hunter in my opinion don’t follow gms oil change schedule use synthetic and gm has a new oil filter for these engines that low restriction I would change no more than 5000 miles

You ROCK! I have a CTS and it's the nicest and fastest car I've ever owned as well... I'm having the same issues, but unfortunately I can't fix it myself and it's too expensive for me to fix...especially since I've been looking to buy a new car and use the CTS as a backup. But I truly appreciate the do-it-yourself mechanics who figure out the issues and share the videos. Thanks!

I appreciate your comment and I thank you for watching. I don't think people understand how nice of a car these are plus like you said they are very fast. Are you going to get a new Cadillac?
@jenniferperez946
@jenniferperez946 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not :-( I've been putting off getting an SUV, I have 2 large dogs who get squished in the backseat of my CTS. I LOVE my CTS, it's a 2007 with 140k miles. The engine runs great (At 120k I had to have the timing chain replaced on GMs dime. Not enough cars affected for a recall, but if you inquire they will cover the cost.) I just replaced the ignition coils (1st time), spark plugs(2nd time), and starter(1st time). It's so fast...the pick-up is excellent. It's always had the "Clunk" when I shift mainly from P to D or R. I started hearing a "whining" noise and found a video here that had the same sound. My mechanic quoted me $2100 for the fix...all the bushings and driveshaft center support bearing need replacing and a few other things. I'm really thinking about keeping it and fixing it when I have the time and maybe talk by brother in law into doing the fixes for me... If I can find a reasonably price SRX I would like to stick with Cadillac, but I'm looking at the GMC Terrain. I'm not done with Cadillacs...I would like another one in 5 years... not sure what kind, but it's going to be a 2 door coupe and not black LOL
@oxmanagain
@oxmanagain 5 жыл бұрын
I understand owning an SUV. I have owned a Cadillac Escalade and currently we have a Land Rover lr3, love having an SUV. I own a black one so I'm with you do not get black also hard to keep things clean. When I had my shift linkage repaired it was only $700 I think 2100 is a little on the expensive side.

Jennifer Perez g Hi get a friend who’s mechanically inclined to help you , couple of cautions after you lift the car put stands under it and block your wheels safety first , also mark with paint or marker all the drive shaft and The rear end flange to the drive shaft and the transmission out put to the drive shaft so they can be put back in the exact location as they are balanced at the factory . Plan the repair first do some home work first I found some videos on line from auto parts suppliers I think it was 1A auto on CTS drive shaft centre bearing repair .It is do able without a hoist or lift .

For the past 2 years I have felt a thump from the rear only on deceleration (removing foot from gas pedal). I guarantee it is the diff bushing now that I have seen this....

Thanks for your great video and showing in detail the components nice and clearly presented . You must live south of the rust belt lucky by the look of your chassis. Here in the rust belt I oil under coat my cars and trucks and keep a winter driver Grand Prix that’s oil undercoated . Any nice car or truck is junk from rust in a few years if you don’t oil the frame ,floor panels box member of the unibody or frame, pillars .

Excellent video young fella. Well relayed and thought out...even if you did not do the job yourself...well relayed. Most people doing "how to " videos where they are doing the work, do not give as much pertinent info or relay as well. Excellent video. Usually guys your age better have good jobs cuz it's gonna cost them. You did good solid research and allowed a professional to do the grunt work...which is where most people are at the mercy of some unscrupulous mechanics. This job could have cost well above $700. The cause of course is the heat baking the coupling over time. Solution: Perfect world...probably a recall to show the imports that domestics are as serious about quality as they are and install better repeat shields and beefier bushings. G.M. would have to take a hit but the long run results would not see G.M. closing factories as they are right now at Christmas time. Excellent job my brother. Rick Troublefield

oxmanagain the only hard part of the repair is the exhaust has to be dropped or removed , my quick way will be to cut and re join rather than try to un bolt a 14 year old exhaust bolts I will check first . I have an 04 Grand Prix and you have to drop the tank to change fuel pump one guy put on line how he cut small inspection cover in the floor above the tank and replaced it that way

I have a CTS and I know it was stupid but I didn't think it was THIS BAD! at the time but On the highway I guess it finally gave out and smoke came out the tailpipe and transmission fluid came leaking out. I thought it ran hot..so after 20mins it still wouldn't shift into drive or reverse. It was revving up in drive,and reverse!? I still hear my shift link in tact as you explained in your video. My question is do I have to replace my transmission as well? Because of the transmission leak? Anyone? The transmission never gave me a problem before until this? Still don't know if this could do damage to the transmission as well? Sorry for the long explanation 😑

Is there a difference in the front bushing compared to the 2 rear support bushing
@oxmanagain
@oxmanagain 5 жыл бұрын
The bushing I changed was on the rear differential. Then I changed the center linage on the driveshaft. To answer your question yes the front and rear bushings are different.

Usually it's the clink clink sound when shifting is a shift linkage bushing. From what I understand there's two of them

@oxmanagain

I went to 3 different websites and not one ask if it was a V6 or V8. Then I found a site that had the same linkage for both the V6 and V8. I think it will work on both of them but to make sure call the dealer and ask them if there is a difference.

That intro, tho 😂 Love the pixelated white edges from a masking a JPEG lazily, and the stock photo watermark just ties it all together. Also it looks like it's at like a quarter of the resolution of the rest of the video... Looking at your videos, it's not like you're strapped for cash, and you seem to strive for a professional look in other aspects of your video production, so if you personally can't put together a more polished intro, why not pay a professional to make one?
