July kicks off colder for many in the south and south-east of Australia thanks to an enormous area of high pressure south of Adelaide and near Tasmania. We had high pressure like this back in May and, just like back then, this new high brings plenty of easterly winds to the continent - meaning the eastern seaboard is showery and often cloudy. Some heavier rain is possible between Sydney and about Gladstone.
But as the week wears on heavy rain and downpours will bubble up through the interior, especially for inland parts of SA.
The downside is many dry parts of VIC, NSW and TAS miss out on rain this time around - or at least, don’t get a lot.
The silver lining is that our final weather map on Sunday shows a new westerly change returning to WA (normality).

Cheers as always mate. Just the type of forecast needed to send the missus and I in to a panic to make sure all the washing's done. 😄

Brilliant thank you Phil and team. It’s winter and that’s all I can say. Cold. But we had 10 mm more rain than the average for June. Long may that continue. We need our reservoirs full before we hit September😆😆👌👌🥰🥰

Monster highs very far south ... in mid winter. I think that's unusual but don't know for sure. Could it be a climate change pattern? Anyway, thanks for the big picture.

Hi there, they are a bit of a distraction to be honest, but represents how thick the atmosphere is higher up where planes fly etc. It's useful at knowing when a proper warm or cold change is moving in/out.

Hi Phil, great job. Can you comment what the SOI is each week as it can change fortnightly. No need for a big explanation, just whether it's "Negative, Positive or Neutral" as I'd like to keep an eye on it in relation to your most excellent weather explanations . I know you may not wish to make a big deal about it as the co-relation with our Hi'/Low's isn't direct, and may muddy the waters, but I've noticed a Neutral SOI can maybe have the effect of denying rain in NW/Central North of Tassie. We are going through the worst drought in living memory (80yrs), and this year has been one of the three driest on record and the BOM July to Sept outlook is still dry. Hopefully this is a once in a lifetime drought, but as they (hopefully), don't come along very often, I'm keen to learn all I can from this bad situation. Sometimes co-relations that normally remain hidden can be seen with more clarity when the weather patterns are more extreme. Can you please include the SOI each week, very brief, just "the SOI is ?" and move on. I've been here in Lower Barrington 5 &1/2 years and am getting a better handle on seasonal and yearly patterns, and have noticed that during: El Nino when mainland Oz is dry and hot, large H's dominate central Oz heating the air and pushing the centres of the Low's in the Oz bite (that would normally swing up through SA, VIC and NSW), to be forced down to a Latitude of Hobart and slightly below, with the Northern tip of the front travelling through Bass strait, giving rain to NW and CW, but dry to Eastern Tassie. And that during La Nina the centres of the Lows travel Bass Strait and above denying rain to NW and CW Tassie, but provide onshore rain to Eastern TAS as they pass into the Tasman Sea. During EL/LN neutral it seems to fluctuate (more years of data required), but if the centres of the Low's are pushed well below Hobart, the SW of Tassie gets rain, but the NW, CN, NE, SE and Central Plateau are denied. This maybe co-relates to neutral SOI's. Could you please get your Brains Trust to check/compare the SOI with the H's in the Bite for the past 6 months. I'm tipping the SOI has been predominately neutral for the same period. This would also impact the NZ weather. Would be happy to get your thoughts on this. taipan_801@hotmail.com Keep up the great work Alan

Hi there, we don't focus much on the Indian Ocean, so you may be better to just get that info directly from BoM (as that's where we would find it) www.bom.gov.au/climate/enso/#tabs=Indian-Ocean As a weather forecaster my focus is much more on the daily/weekly weather pattern, rather than the overriding monthly/seasonal climate drivers. Cheers :) Phil

The question I want to ask is, Australia getting wetter from climate change?
@freedom_born
@freedom_born Ай бұрын
Accumulatively, yes. Immediately, not really. But you'll have to include "drier" as well as wetter. "Climate change" is just a misnomer. The climate's always changing. Increases in seasonal changes however are relatively* balanced for El/La Niño/Niña, with regards to industrial and natural contribution of greenhouse gases - as the ENSO data maps show. Again, climate change is just a misnomer. Greenhouse ppm levels are the actual talking point. Hence why country's and companies are aiming for zero carbon and NetZero plans... like France.
