I am excited to be starting a new cabin build, located in the Ozarks of Arkansas. I will be doing the custom log work on this project, along with Dan from Pennsylvania and David from Arkansas. I’m excited to be working with these guys as it makes the job much easier and faster.
To see more of Dan’s work, check out his KZfaq channel at / @pinecraftloghomes9052
In this video, we will start by laying the first log and continue stacking through round four. The dimensions of this cabin are 18’ by 42’, with a side addition also being 18’ by 42’. Since we don’t have logs that are long enough to span the 42’ length, we will be splicing logs together. At some point in this project there will be some instruction provided on how to cut the splices.
Thank You for watching, and please don’t forget to hit the like button, subscribe and share. We would love to hear your comments.

Howdy Tim- a friend who lives in Estonia and is a super talented log builder told us about it. He has been using them for a long time. I got the idea of using it for the “hewing “ from him. He built a house and the people wanted it to have the hewn log faces on the outside and he used his peeling disc. It looked great so we did some log faces for a kitchen wall. God bless

Paul, you are excellent at what you do. This home is almost what I want to build. Mine would be 36' x 24' two story, with a 24' log dividing wall centered front to back. Half second story and full height on the other half. And use timber frame king post rafters with a 12/12 pitch with slate roof. I have 35 acres of beautiful Tulip Poplar in WV and will be getting a sawmill to cut the inner and outter faces. Lastly, add a 36' x 12' front porch and a 36' x 12' rear addition. Sound good? 😊 I could use some help 😊

Howdy Tim- thank you so much for the kind words. I sure wish you the very best with your build. Sounds like you have a good idea of what you want. I wish we had poplar here but it grows more in the states east of us. We do have an abundance of southern yellow pine at our disposal so that is what l use. What kind of sawmill are you planning to get? I have a Woodland Mills HM126 with the 14 hp engine that does anything l need to do. I can easily cut up to 24’-26’. If push came to shove l could get 32’ on the mill but I don’t know anything to handle anything that big. Send me an email at thebeardedcarpenter8@gmail.com if you have any questions. God’s blessings to you

Paul.. Cliff here, This is going to be a great build, I know your crowd is going to love this.... but I wondered if you have ever incorperated a ship lap to the top and bottom of each log on a cabin? I thought of this idea, and to just rip about 1.5" on a 45° on the outside top of each log, to simulate the chinking effect. My thought was to keep away from letting the cold radiate through the chinking in the gaps. And the 45's would not weather like the rest of the exterior, leaving little maintenance for the furure. I wanted to do this back in the 70's, and never did....Well let me know what you think of that idea... I figured you were up to something, looking foward to watching another build.👍

Howdy Cliff- thank you for watching the video and commenting. I’ve seen something like this done on a log house close to where I live. I don’t normally build with dimensional timber but with live edge which is a little bit different. I let the cabin settle before putting the chinking in the gaps. I put insulation in the gaps before the chinking goes in. Take care and God bless. Merry Christmas

Just found your channel a couple of weeks ago. Going through your videos and learning so much! Followed all of your social media. Post some more to Instagram! I know you're busy. What a treasure you and your knowledge are! I have decided to get out of my high mortgage house in California and buy a piece of land here nearby to build on. We live in the mountain and foothill area near Yosemite. You have shown me that I CAN have a long dreamed for log home and do it mortgage free. Plan: Buy land, set up RV spot, Sell house, live on new property, build log home slowly using your methods, enjoy hand crafted log home. I even have the faith I can do this at 66 years of age. Praise God and keep the videos coming!

Howdy y’all- this is the reason why we started the KZfaq channel- to help others realize their dream by making it become a reality. I’m so happy you have decided that this is something you can do. Being your age will not be a hindrance because you will go into this knowing it will be some work. I invite you to watch the KZfaq channel Live Free or Die Trying. This gentleman is in Sweden and has been following our channel and is building his own log cabin. Michael is in your age bracket and has done a fantastic job. He had never done anything like this before. I believe you will be encouraged by watching him. I really feel a close kinship to him even though we have never met yet. If there is anything I can help you with please feel free to email me at thebeardedcarpenter8@gmail.com. I will return an email as soon as I can. It sounds like you have a game plan that will work for you. Please keep me updated on how everything goes for you. God’s blessings to y’all and I wish you a very blessed new year

@@TheBeardedCarpenter Thank you Paul for all your help and suggestions. I really felt the Lord's leading on this because I found the Live Free or Die Trying YT channel just before I found your channel. I have watched many of his videos on the construction of his cabin. Yes you are right about being encouraged watching his content just as I am in watching yours. That was the spark to keep looking on YT for more "build" videos that led me to yours. I also am watching Noah Bradley's Handmade Houses channel also. I agree with Noah and with your same work ethic also to "build the best and most beautiful house you can build" so it can last for 200 years or more. Your attention to detail and your willingness to share your knowledge with us has made me a follower for sure. You know times are getting tough and some folks are converting Tuff Sheds into small homes on a piece of land to get out of crushing housing debt. Well, more power to them but I want something more durable. The days are upon us to where many are looking for a better more affordable housing solution and what you teach is just that! Besides you can't beat the looks of a well designed log cabin or home! Most people love them! I will keep you updated and send you an email also. Thank you so much for your help! Happy and Blessed New year! Dale

Mr Bearded Carpenter, The quality and sheer size of the wood you use, coupled with your craftsmanship, will ensure that your structures will last several centuries. I hope you sign your art, maybe on some hard to reach part of a log.... Merry Christmas.

Like The spliced log, done right. Paul, the "Pealing Disk" where is it available and what is it called?s Paul we need to talk about Log Screws instead of all thread rod. I had a Structural Engineer run calculations and per the Log Screw is screwed in from above and does not require pre drilling nut driver I only need 6" depth and you would just put them where you have all thread rod. I pre drill 1" hole down so the Log Screws only need 6" and do not require pre drilling. 5/8 nut driver, not having to getting the all thread rods in a log hole, I still pre drill a 1" hole with my Woods Owl down 6" on a 12" log and use a 12" log screw 'and a 1" pvc spacer so I can pre drill holes the same depth. Then screw in the 12" log screw 6". Eliminates lining up all thread rod and it is screwed in from above. Blessing,Tom

Howdy Thomas- those splices work really nice. I’ve got a case of timber loc screws, but will be using them for anchoring the joists. The all thread anchor rods were in when we started the job. Hope all is well. Merry Christmas and God bless

Sir I have watched many of your videos it’s always enjoyable to see you build log cabins. My question is about a saw I have seen you use. It’s a MS211 which I have one and have had a lot of problems with. Have you had any problems with yours? I have a farm boss and a ms661 magnum which I have have no problems with.
@TheBeardedCarpenter
@TheBeardedCarpenter 6 ай бұрын
Howdy Terry- the 211 has a carving bar on it, not that I do any carving. When I got the saw it didn’t oil well because I had the wrong sprocket on and didn’t realize the sprocket had something to do with it oiling. Have the right one on it now and have no problems with that. It starts better than any saw I use. The only issue is it will leak some bar oil. Other than that it’s a dependable saw. That 661 is quite a hoss, about like my 394 Husky. I hope you can get your 211 figured out. Thank you so much for watching our videos and commenting. Happy New Year to you and yours. God bless y’all

Cool stuff! Do these logs come with the dove tail notches already or are you doing that off camera? That disc tool for hewing looks interesting. :) Merry Christmas! and God bless!
@TheBeardedCarpenter
@TheBeardedCarpenter 7 ай бұрын
Howdy Foxman- we cut the notches ourselves. You can go back in our videos and watch how I lay out and cut them using chainsaws and old hand tools. Everything is custom cut. I will show some of the notch cutting along with how to do the splices. The grinder with the disc is actually for peeling logs but works great for “hewing “ the outside surface of the logs. Thank you so much for watching the video. God bless and Merry Christmas

Hey friend, coming to you here from Salisbury, NC. I ran into something today. I was hewing a log today and thought about your videos I watched a year or two ago... have you ever hewn a pine log that just refuses to be hewn? Really thin bark and and rippley/knotty surface? Aged dried sap pockets on 80%...

Howdy Micah- I’ve hewed some that were difficult to take the sawmill marks off the surface. Hewing around knots can be a challenge because of the grain changing so much. Are you trying to hew the top of the tree where the limbs are? Hopefully you will be able to get it hewed. Keep a sharp axe. God’s blessings to you

I know nothing about this construction method and im wondering if there is reason for the gaps in the walls?
@TheBeardedCarpenter
@TheBeardedCarpenter 20 күн бұрын
Howdy Joseph- thank you so much for watching the video. The gaps are called chinking gaps and they are filled in with insulation and a mortar mix. The older cabins were built this way to be able to get as much height out of the logs as possible. They were using live edge logs so the area between the logs wasn’t uniform and they would fill the gaps with different materials. I like the look of the live edge because you get to see the natural shapes of the logs so each log has its own personality. Nowadays people will get their logs cut on all four sides to simplify the raising of the walls. Having the logs cut four square has its advantages when having to splice logs on longer walls. Hope this helps. God bless
