Özil was an absolute mastermind. Sad his career come to an unworthy end and indeed hoped we will see him back at his home club Schalke, but our situation was simply to bad. I have huge respect for him that he always spoke out his mind ("in good times i'm german, in bad times i'm turkish") and showed off field engagement for very important but uncomfortable topics (persecution of chinese muslims) while risking his own career. Also I cheered him up for always admitting his own faults (bad greedy management in his first years, personal decisions, etc.). Sadly most germans still feel offended when some players can adapt to two nationalities/cultures...

I am a german and it gets me furious every time listening how other germans are talking about him. They have no clue, they are reducing him on the picture with Erdogan. Don't care much about the Erdogan thing, but you have to remember two things: -When that happened, his career was already in freefall and that event just destroyed him further, particularly as it was not a great period of Arsenal's history and was followed by Germany's crash at the World Cup in 2018; -As you say, Ozil's best years were with Werder and Real. He deserves immense plaudits for that. Yet what we mostly hear about is how brilliant he was in... England, where he had the worst periods of his career. He deserves to be remembered for all the good things he did prior to moving to Arsenal, after that not so much.

Mesut Özil is a hard case. Because I'm German, the subject of Özil often comes up and I've talked and argued with others about him a lot. In my opinion, Özil is perhaps the most talented player Germany has ever had. He was absurdly good, his understanding of the game, his vision, he saw spaces and opportunities before they were there. He was creative, technically unbelievably good, could dribble and decide 1 vs 1 situations for himself, something that only a few in the German national team, could do. He was the perfect playmaker and a joy to watch. He had the potential to become one of the greatest of all time. But then there was also the other side of Özil, a very frustrating side. He was undisciplined, lazy and and a difficult human being from time to time. His body language on the pitch was often questionable, when the game wasn't going his way he would get frustrated and sometimes stop playing. He was the kind of player we in Germany call a "Schönwetterfußball", that means a player who only performs when it's going well. Beyond the appropriate criticism, Özil has received a lot of racism in Germany. Even tho he was born and raised in Gelsenkirchen(Schalke), many Germans could not appreciate him simply because of his turkish roots. Now that his career is over, Mesut Özil will forever be one of the biggest "what if's" in modern football for me.
@kaedeakamatsu6877
@kaedeakamatsu6877 10 ай бұрын
only that he never recieved lots of racism because of his turkish roots. gündogan is loved here in germany as well. why? because he is a likable person. he is intelligent, and never says or does stupid shit. özil on the other hand like you said was a lazy slob and this is why he recieved so much hate from us. btw not taking pictures with a dictator helps as well. imagine a scenario where müller or neuer takes pictures with hitler, how would people like that? yes gündogan did it as well but we all know that he is a good person and he apologized so we forgave him. stop playing the race card because it has always been his own fault.
@Dir3ctH3X
@Dir3ctH3X 10 ай бұрын
He doesn't need to show "work-rate", that's an excuse. Germany had so many good solid options for ball holding and midfield control, the last thing you want is you creative genius getting into tackles and risking injury all the time. Guys like Pirlo and Ozil , Juan Riquelme , Paolo Sosa, make up for "work rate" with their creative talents. The rest of the team knows this and covers for it, or makes the right calls in behind. These guys are even more precious because the modern footballer is an absolute machine at doing the basics, they can all tackle, run , press etc, but very few of them can do what Ozil did and have that ball on a string. You can see that with the 2022 Argentinian team, which was entirely setup around Messi and in the semi against Croatia you could see how that worked when he turned it on against Gvardiol. In tight games you need an Ozil, a Pirlo, a Messi , a Zidane to bring magic that is the 1% differentiator and wins you games. Germany should have built an entire team around Ozil, and when he wanted to leave Arsenal, brought him back to Bayern or Dortmund or even Werder and stuck him cotton wool.
@therodian96
@therodian96 10 ай бұрын
@@Dir3ctH3X I never said he had to get into tackles or help out defensively to show "work rate". That's not what I meant and nobody expected that from him. When things weren't going well or he simply didn't feel like it, he also neglected his offensive duties from time to time. He no longer sprinted for the ball or gave up after a few steps, hung his head, didn't really offer to get the ball or to get involved in the game. He started to play the safe pass instead of trying something more risky, his standards got worse, he took a lot of very bad penalties in important situations, he just seemed unmotivated.

There's is alot of information missing in a certain part of this video. Germany is one of several nations that leans heavily on Jus Sanguinis instead of Jus Solis (birthright citizenship). As a result, Klose and Podolski are automatically Germans because they are Aussiedler since they had German Ancestors from the Prussian Province of Silesia. Because of the wars, part of their ancestors became emigrants. Both of them had the option of "Right to Return" to Germany. Even if they were born outside of the country, they're still Germans; hence Jus Sanguinis.

Ozil at Werder and Real Madrid was phenomenal, both for club and country. At Arsenal he was largely disgusting particularly after the first 3 years, but the Premier League hype machine would make you believe that Real Madrid had made a mistake selling him (same thing happening with Odegaard now) and that the brilliant Ozil was single-handedly carrying Germany to a World Cup title when in fact Muller, Klose, Gotze, Schweinsteiger, Khedira, Lahm and Kroos were the key players that year. Real Madrid were winning title after title without him, Ozil moved to England and competed for FA Cups and 4th place medals...

As an Arsenal fan I was beyond excited when we got him, back then he was one of the best players in the world. And he was good for a couple of years but at a certain point he just stopped working hard, it like he didn't care anymore. Some players fall out of love with the game, it's sad but it's true.

Something you forgot to mention is that he also presented his jersey from the German national team to Erdogan before the 2018 worldcup. That pretty much counterdicts his claim of meeting Erdogan randomly as you don't have your merchandise ready when you meet people randomly. Also he did tat without the concent of DFB who likely wouldn't have agreed to that and without even informing them. All that fuzz shifted focus away from performing at the world cup more towards political drama and created a rift between him and the team as well as the DFB.

As a Turk I have to add in a couple of things. When it was time for the 2010 WC Özil stated that he was a German and he would play for Germany when asked about his Turkish heritage, which is understandable after all he was born and raised there. What makes me angry is that when he got flak for the Uygur Turks stuff he then decided he was Turkish and started to appeal to us and then came to Turkey to essentially become another one of Erdoğan's lap dogs.

Hated by many but loved by God. For example, Özil donated his prize money of $329,000 after winning the World Cup in 2014. He donated to the Big Shoe project and financed vital surgeries for 23 children in Brazil. Additionally, Özil and his wife donated to 16 refugee camps in Turkey and Syria after their wedding. Their contribution provided food to about 100,000 people. Furthermore, the couple funded important surgeries for about 1,000 children around the world. This is what Özil done. Great person, always I enjoy seeing him playing soccer.

Great video, thank you so much. Also it is true that unfortunately we still have a lot of systematic discrimination and racism in Germany and Özil definitely had to suffer from this, it is NOT true that he got his German passport so late because Germany wanted to benefit from his talent. Everyone born in Germany automatically is granted the German citizenship. No questions asked. But it is up to the person to accept it and to go to the authorities to pick up the passport. The fact that he did not do it before just proves that he and his family never tried to integrate and never considered themselves German. Which was one big reason why he was never loved from the majority of Germans despite his great skills.
@LoveToHearUSing

I think that's true, in a way. For a third generation immigrant his way of speaking German was not exactly up to par. He still speaks German with a Turkish accent, I sometimes wonder whether he speaks Turkish with a German accent as well.
@simons1120
@simons1120 Жыл бұрын
Özil had already been in critique beforehand because he refused to sing the German anthem before international matches. Which was upsetting because it was sending the message of not being willing to integrate in and associate with the country that provided a home for his family for three generations. When he posed openly with the Turkish president during a time of heated international relations, that just fueled the perception that his allegiance is not with Germany but with Turkey. If you're trying to blame it on racism or xenophobia then you can only be trying to sell a narrative. If anything, he segregrated himself, not the other way around. Which is his free choice, but he must be ready to receive criticism for it. And criticism is just that. Criticism. It's not cruelty.

'Arsenal decided they could only keep one of Sanchez and Ozil' that's simply not true, they tried to keep them both but Sanchez decided he wanted to leave, and with 6 months left on his contract they had no choice but to accept Man Utd's offer of a swap with Mhki. At that point having failed to keep Alexis they knew it would have been a disaster to allow Ozil to leave aswel, for free no less, so they gave him what he wanted
