Excellent work Oz, I have been chasing a cam sensor fault on a 2001 twin turbo Subaru Legacy. I swapped out the sensor, checked and double-checked the wiring and so on. I was getting to the end of what I could check! scoped everything and hey-presto NOISE! That alternator seemed fine, was putting out a good charge and all but was causing interference. Changed the Alternator and the vehicle runs beautifully. Thank you so much for your great video.

Good job Oz. Really appreciate your videos. From experience 120 mV AC to 250 mV AC seems to be the max allowed ripple depending on manufacturers. Usually outside this range you'll get sensor related codes just like this beauty you diagnosed. Even if no codes occur it's good to test AC ripple when newer batteries are testing bad. AC voltage is bad on batteries.

@NewLevelAuto

amr hamed so how then would you pursue a flex ray network failure due to signal attenuation? It's not a fancy tool at all. It's quite basic . And if used properly is one of the greatest in any diagnosticians arsenal. Are there other ways ? In most cases yes , but certainly not all. A decent scope is under 100 dollars. A snap on ratchet used is the same price. Remember that we do not have the luxury of just repeatedly fitting parts to see if it's the failure. We only have a few hours and that customer must have their vehicle back. Where are you from if I may ask?

Found this video as I am tackling a stubborn P0335 Code on a 2010 Honda Civic Hybrid (not my first choice in a car but as a ride share free lancer; it is my bread and butter) Replaced cam sensor (New OEM) and it’s back six months after the repair. Ocasional abnormal idle. Rpm activity will act up while driving and shifting gears. Lurches every now and again while driving. I appreciate this thorough and informative video. I am still scratching my head on what could be causing this code but it looks like I found myself a good channel to subscribe to in the process. Video notifications are turned on. Great video!

When I first started down this path of learning about diagnostics, I was attempting to find a way a DIY'er could bypass using a scope and use common methods (cheap). But as I learn, I have also realized having a scope is required, or, you take it to a good shop.

Added information... the Radio suppression capacitors are found on the front of the engine. Those capacitors aren't for the "radio." Capacitors filter out noise just like what you saw on your scope. In other words they filter out radio frequency noise (RF noise). You might have fixed it with the alternator but I believe the better fix was with the capacitor... it only costs $8. Soon the new alternator might cause the same problem and you'll be in the same problem. Excellent video but go further just like you said and don't throw parts at your car. In fact might be able to clean the connections on the capacitor and it'll be free.

Any oscilloscope should work here:a cheap chinese one aught to do just as well. The Snap-on one is just made with Automotive use in mind (and they're built like tanks). You may also be able to remove the alternator and take it to a shop to have it tested for this as well, which might be a cheaper option then taking in the whole car.

It was late in the evening, so I decided to bypass diag mode, & jump straight to iATN Fix Database mode, where I found one hit on this symptom, which turned out to be related to excessive diode ripple. So, I removed the connector from the regulator, & viola, symptom gone! New alternator fixed car. Thanks for another great diag vid.

I have a 2004 Nissan Frontier 4x4 3.3L V6. It all of the sudden would just not start. It threw the P0340 Code so naturally I had the County mechanic replace the distributor because that is where the Cam position sensor is; well, it still didn't fire after that. I saw another video that said this code could also be caused by the Crank position sensor, so i ordered one of those and it hasn't arrived yet. I also ordered a knock sensor because I also got that code a while back when I was having misfires and needed to replace spark plug 6. It is winter here in Northern MN and my truck is a long ways away from civilization parked in the snow. I really need some help with this one.

Great diagnostic and shows why electronic problems can be tricky. I hope those who don't wrench on their cars appreciate why the mechanics they pay can't always solve every issue on a 1st pass. It appears the alternator output noise coupled into the analog ground of the engine controller (needs more filters), and also that perhaps Ford chose a too-low threshold for the VR signal from the camshaft sensor. Perhaps purposeful so it would still work as the sensor magnet aged or if installation distance was off, but also makes it touchy to any noise in the signal or controller.
@darishopkins2573

I'm betting any noise is irrelevant.
@williamgrissom9022
@williamgrissom9022 2 жыл бұрын
@@darishopkins2573 No need to bet since he proved the alternator was the noise source. He disabled the alternator so the engine then ran off battery alone and the camshaft sensor signal became very clean. He also researched the problem for this specific model and found where others cured the sensor code issue by swapping in a rebuilt alternator. The camshaft sensor error code then disappeared, proving that the noise was the problem (thus was very relevant).

Hey, so we have a 2v mustang that’s throwing the code, we took it to 2 shops and a Ford dealer and they couldn’t figure it out. We did like 3 alternators, 1 even failed on the highway on the way home. They changed the wiring also. The car even has new spark plugs from a shop. Is there any other reason it’s still throwing the code? Could it be a timing chain, the car never starts first try.

@Echo024
@Echo024 2 жыл бұрын
Removing the battery terminal while the car is running just demonstrates that the alternator is able to produce enough amperage at the right voltage to power all the electrical systems. Due to the method by which the alternator generates electricity, it’s naturally rough and uneven but there’s a small electrical component called a diode inside the alternator which “cleans” the power output so it’s nice and smooth. When the diode fails, the rough and pulsing power is fed into the rest of the electrical system and can cause codes for some of the more sensitive parts like cam/crank sensors. If the diode fails, the best course of action is a new alternator. I’ve had terrible luck with remanufactured units but then again new OEM stuff costs an arm and a leg.

Is the p0010 code for 2015 Hyundai Sonata sport 2.4L GDI problem really is what the scanner says it is or the problem somewhere else? also where exactly is the cam position intake solenoid located because where everyone is showing it’s not there on my vehicle. Let me know please

Thank you for the informational video. I got this code on my o3 civic lx 168000mi when I was going uphill on a dirt mountain road @ 35mph. The engine lost power and shutown and the p0340 came on. I cleared the code and was able to come home. Two weeks after it came back on but the engine didn't shut down. Three weeks later came back on again. I cleared it and hasn't come back since then. Checked the alternator and battery and they are good. What should I do? I also have a cat convert below threshold codes that comes and goes every now and then.

@@OzMechanics I appreciate nice and good. Nice and good is so much better than nasty and bad. Who among us has an argument with nice and good? Let those who do walk around the block a few more times. Be that as it may, instead of, "How to fix code P0340", I would suggest, "One way to fix code P0340." Your fix, while very nice and good, may not fix all instances of P0340. My neighbor just came into possession of a 2001 BMW 525i that is throwing a P0340 DTC. I need to get a scope like you have to probe the situation. I will keep you updated.

@@karyl-lynndesrosiers7599 The car had a few other issues besides the P0340 code. My neighbor took it to the local German car shop that has a good rep, Siegfrid's. My neighbor said a new sensor fixed the P0340 code problem. The car ran beautifully he claims, even when it was throwing the code.

I have an 03 neon that dies when driving. Have codes for cam and crank sensors. Replaced them both and took timing cover off to check it. The timing looked good but I put in a new belt since I had that off. There has been no change it still does the same thing. Is there a way I can test the food of the alternator without the scanner?

It throws a cam shaft code but when I go to get the part its like it don't exist. I'm so confused and angry. What do I need to do .

Damn man you did a good job. You know your shit. I never would have thought the alternator was the problem. So here's my question, I don't have one of those diagnostic tools. I already changed the camshaft sensor cause it was a cheap fix but the code just came on again. Is there another way of telling if the alternator is the problem without that oscilloscope.
@OzMechanics
@OzMechanics Жыл бұрын
Using a multimeter and see if your alternator is producing excessive ac ripple. But this will only cause problems on 2 wire cam sensors

Back in the 80s I had an Alltest multimeter that automatically checked bad diodes as you checked dc voltage. That can play hell with computer issues . Man that was cool. It should still be a feature, but its not.

Hey Oz I have a 2005 Subaru Legacy gt i have a cam sensor circuit code and i changed them both changed the oxy sensors had new coils an sparks done an a month later i got the cam code but it runs fine but when i go to slow down it either dies or has a rough idle. Not all the time does it do this though it is random. Most of the time when i crank up it has a moment or two the idle sounds rough an some times when i put it in drive or reverse it acts up but its random though so no consistent. Would that be the wiring harness to the sensors? being its a Subaru not the best wiring. Or would it be something else cause its not feeling a running like a bad cam sensor thank you for your time!!
