@@matthewblackwood4704 check transmission fluid first. If fluid is OK, it means the transmission neutral switch is not properly engaged in park, so it won't start. Make sure you can pry the transmission gear knob area with a screw driver, to help engage the transmission in park.

If you’re having issues w these things, it’s time for a good quality reman crate motor, don’t waste your time with the cam phasers, they would be working if there was oil pressure, & because they’re not they’re garbage along with the motor. Grenade the motor then drop a crate motor in it not from the crap yard that’s not a 3v & it’ll be fine.

I have the same code popping up P0345. I changed the CamShaft sensor, no luck... I pulled the VCT solenoid and cranked the engine just like you did... Still gets me the error code. Now... I'm going in to check the phaser. It's been worked on before. Prior owner had some work done on it. I'm fearing they also used aftermarket sub quality parts. Now. I'm going to fix it. Your videos are so helpful. I'm legitimately done taking my cars and trucks to mechanic shops. I get it all done myself now with the help of Hanes and Chilton books plus your videos. Thank you!

We have similar problems at the plant where the 5.0L is built. If the exhaust VCT isn't installed correctly it will ruin the VCT and nose of the cam when it goes through the machine that checks the timing. I said all that just to agree that if you don't install the VCT correctly and torque it properly you're wasting your time and money. Great video and i agree with another commenter that this guy is thorough and explains what to look for and what not to do on certain repairs.

That’s probably the thing I enjoy most about your videos: You don’t just start replacing parts and say “Maybe this will work” or “Maybe this will fix it”. You actually take the time and do actual diagnosis and do a process of elimination. Part by part, step-by-step. This is the way it should be. But as you already know, a lot of dealerships don’t do that. They just start replacing parts and hope that it’ll fix the problem. Keep up the good work.

Great diag! It seems like I won't see these 3valves for a while then all of a sudden they start coming in one after another, at my age of 56 and working on so many different car lines I definitely need a refresher in these engines from time to time. Down here in South Louisiana we don't have to deal with rust and most of these trucks are in good shape, but if I can learn any thing about any vehicle especially these engines I'm all ears. I'm one of the few shops that will work on these engines, a lot of the other shops have been burned on them so they won't touch them. Great video looking forward to the next one!

I've been running okay with frequent oil changes (every 5k miles) and a bottle of oil stabilizer now for 2 yrs since I got the truck. It seems to be worse sometimess, better at other times. Runs fine, no stalling. In fact, someone pointed the ticking out to me saying they had a Triton engine do this but I no longer noticed it until he pointed it out. I drove 2000 miles cross country and towed a trailer with a car on it no problem last year.

My 2017 Gen2 3.5L had Ford phasers and the cab came off x3 before 30,000 miles to replace them. I traded out of it. I also had similar issues with my three valve 5.4, however at much longer intervals. I can now say that I am back in a pushrod vehicle. I will go EV before I ever purchase another gasoline engine with highly variable VCTs.

Sea Hawk Toyota and Honda have had relatively few issues with their VVT systems in well maintained vehicles. There’s nothing wrong with the design. It’s the junk parts combined with the lack of maintenance that has made Ford’s such a nightmare. GM’s V-6 engines aren’t having major problems as well due to garbage O.E. Parts.

This is great stuff! I plan to use the exact same diagnosis. Last year I did the whole timing job: the chain, phasers, solenoids....ALL Ford parts. I put a Melling 340HV oil pump in too. Sometimes when coming to a stop, the timing on one bank will not go back to base. It's like it's stuck activated.

That is an oil pressure and volume issue. If you are sure everything was installed properly and the pan has been cleaned out with no startup rattle then I recommend performing a crankshaft end play check. If ok then use 5w-30 oil, if the concern is still there then use Rotella 5w-40 oil.

@@FordTechMakuloco I still have to drop the pan and check/clean the pickup tube. I don't recall any broken pieces or chunks missing from the teardown but I suppose I could find something wrong. I'll report back on what I find!

Today I dropped the pan. Found a chunk of what looks like a guide in the pickup screen. And also a lining on the bottom of the pan with grit, looks like from the old chains. Cleaned everything and reinstalled. I checked crank endplay too, very little movement. Less than 004 I am STILL getting this to happen. I'm just like WTF at this point

Oh and I'm getting 21psi oil pressure when this happens. It remains steady and doesn't bounce around on the gauge.

@@gmtech2012 Did you check the cam cap ends for gasket debree? Radiator cam cap on the drivers cam, and the cap next to the firewall on the passenger side cam? There is a gasket that goes behind where your oil filter screws on, on my triton that gasket was breaking off. I found a few pieces of it clogging up the tiny oil passages in the caps I described.

I can really use your help on this! I have a 2004 Ford F-150 with 155,000 miles on it around 100,000 miles the timing was done on it the full subang with moterctaft parts! At 140,000 my transmission went out, I had it replaced but the transmission shop damaged the transmission lines so all the fluid leaked out 2 days later. They put new lines on it but my motor was running really rough and it was indicative of cam phasers. Took it to the shop and me and the mechanic got into the front end and realized my timing chain has stretched and it broke a guide, we redid the entire timing on it and it’s been driving perfectly until the past few thousand miles, ever since I purchased the truck it’s had a p1000 code and it doesn’t throw a check engine light but that’s not my main problem my problem is I’ll go to work in the morning start up the truck and I see a puff of smoke out the tail pipe for a second and sometimes when I get on the grass smoke will come out, also when I get home and put in in reverse to back up the driveway it starts to run really rough but if I get the rpms above 1500 for a second everything smooths out, it throws a p0022 code and I’m really confused now! What should I look for. It has new camshaft position sensors, new vct things, new spark plugs, and new coil packs! Please help!

Fantastic video Brian. I assume those oil holes lined up in the cam bearing? I'd check the torque on the passenger side phaser too.

As always great videos. Couple of years ago I rebuilt a 5.4 3V that I picked up used. That engine was a reman (engine in truck seized). Same as this one they lined honed the head and installed cam bearings. I ordered new thumper cams and to my surprise they did not fit! Long story short I found out the company that rebuilt the motor the first time not only lined honed the head but also ground 10 thousands off the cam itself! Had to get the cams machined to fit! Did you run into this same issue or did you reuse the old cam?

Hi, love the videos and much thanks...but, I used your link to the ELM adapter and it goes to OBDlink MX, which was 100 and i bought it. Trying to configure forscan now, and realizing i should have got the 327 hard connector for only about 20 bucks. Now im out 100 bucks and not getting the diagnostics I needed; dang!

Really really wish there was a mechanic who is as thorough as you around Omaha, NE. I have some type of issue with mine but don’t want to do it myself in fear of messing something up. I’m one who would just do all parts under front cover. Chain to phasers.
