This is a really basic overview on how I would go about designing a DIY duck pond. Last year I helped a lovely fellow and his 3 ducks, with the designing part of a DIY duck pond. I can't remember the exact ratios that we used but the sorts of sizing and formulas that I talk about in this video and on my website would be pretty close to the mark.
Anyway if you want to keep tabs on Christopher's pond give him a follow over on instagram- actioncrock...
In the video I mentioned various DIY filters heres some links to videos on ones that I've built for my ponds.

I've just bought a property with a horrible 'koi pond'. It's small and dirty and I feel awful for the poor fish. No idea how they've survived. Your channel makes building a proper pond look almost easy- wish me luck.

Three weeks ago I've made a new 200l pond with water lillies in my balcony.Season has started.It's a second season I have balcony pond.I've always had a aquarium and last year I got idea to have patio pond with fish and water lilies.And it happened so.But no filtration first year.I had some problems with algea. This year,three weeks ago I've made a bog filter from flower pot.Just one pump,nothing else!(600litres per hour) and I'm growing some water plants in that bog filter. The water is crystal clear!!! The bog filter is simply a perfect priceless thing! Thank you for your good advices!🙂👍

My gut reaction to seeing ducks on your channel was panic. Your ponds are so beautiful and I can only imagine what kind of nastiness ducks would cause. But now that I've watched the whole video, I understand what was going on and it's pretty cool that you were able to help out the guy.

I built an Oz ponds inspired bog filter. Not going to lie it was a lot of work. Used a high quality 45mm liner even used the olive barrel.. I used a cheap 15 mm liner for the earlier build of the pond before I found this channel. I think it is leaking a bit since it goes down about 4 inches every few days. Need to upgrade it and build shelve for stacking of rocks. So, thanks for the information here!

I like how you keep watching. I’m the same. First time I see or read something I’m like “that’s too hard”. Then I keep learning, watching, reading and it all clicks, and I’m like “ok I’ve got this”. When you build your new one it’s going to be awesome. You’ve put the work in learning 👍.

Been waiting for this one lol. One thing I did with my design when adding a second bog was to separate it some from the main pond, and make extra large shelves in the pond--this is to help female ducks get away from male ducks and still enjoy the water.
@Ozponds
@Ozponds Ай бұрын
This is a good idea. Christopher’s space was quite small and he wanted it quite deep, so the shelves are narrow.

Hey another great video, thank you. I've finally finished my pond and started looking at plants, marginal, oxygenated ones and floaters, I've been following you since day 1, don't suppose you could do a segment on plants please? What soil, if any.. when, where, etc etc.. especially as its start of summer here in uk? Great time to source plants. Keep up the great work you do Kev.. and thank you from sunny England lol.

I’ve never done a natural pond with bog filter. I’ve seen it done. I wouldn’t expect the same level of clarity.

My brain can't wrap around how the water is pumped in to the filter at the bottom. Assuming the bog filter is full of water, that's a lot of downward pressure, so the pump has to have enough power to push water into the bog barrel I would think. Is that how it works? If so, is there some calculation regarding the volumne in the barrel and how much power the pump needs to work this way? If the pump is underpowered, would this just push the water backward and overpower the pump or ruin it? I've always thought you need to pump the dirty water into the top and gravity flows down through the barrel and out the bottom once it passes through filtering material. Then you don't need as powerful a pump to just get the water in there. It also seems more complicated to pump into the bottom, with the piping and elbows and air ports and 'T's and all that. If you just pump right from a tube into the top, isn't that much easier? I must be missing something. I ain't no rocket surgeon!

Sounds like you just need to do more research. It’s impossible to cover everything an individual needs in one video. That’s why I’ve published over 200 vids. Good luck with your journey 👍

@@Ozponds oh, no I'm only talking about water pressure of adding water at the bottom. I've seen many videos and some pump into the bottom, some have an open pipe down the middle that the water just flows down into, and some pump to the top and gravity filters it downward to the outlet at the bottom. I'm trying trying to get a picture of how water pressure is working in these cases and which might be better. I feel like pumping dirty water to the top is simpler. And because all the worst water is now at the top, it's easier to replace some of the top media and clean it out. But if the dirty water is pumped to the bottom, there is no way to easily clean out the worst gunk without a big cleanout valve or access at the bottom, or just emptying the entire thing to get to the bottom.

Hi Chris, I am making a upflow bog filter going into either a stream or waterfalls back into my pond. I have a 15 x 15 foot liner, I also have a type of aquablock that are 9 x 15.5 x 23.5 and a 12 inch culvert, along with a barrel. Would I be better to go deep like 3' plus depth and double high blocks, or go wide like 2.5' deep, single layer of blocks over culvert, coved by a layer of various of rock sizes? It is based on your design, just not sure if I should go more surface area and volume or less surface and deeper. It will be fed by a 5,000 gph pump.
@Ozponds
@Ozponds Ай бұрын
Wider. Both will work but if you have space, wider. Should make cleaning easier as the gravel bed is shallower.

Of course. You could even drill a drainage hole in the base of the pond if you need to completely drain it.
