I am about to buy some ducks and was looking for a way to keep the pond clean. I have to tip my hat off to you, this has so many incredible elements of waste water treatment, hydroponics and permaculture that it is better phrased as simply art. Good job Roger, loved your video. Very calm and collected unlike some other videos on KZfaq. I swear some guys just need to get the camera off of their ugly mugs and show me the process rather than waste my time. I was wondering about your use of 3 pumps. Could you get by using one high flow pump. Pumping directly from the bottom of your pond to the conical (settling) tubs and allowing the gravity flow to do the rest of the filtration? I love your setup with the Hyacinths and duckweed. I had hyacinths for a short time in my pond until I introduced ducks into my system. Then it was the salad bar. Then this past season I had about 60+ wild mallards every day which really loaded up my pond. I don't have anything setup yet, but you gave me some good ideas on where to begin. Could you provide an update on your system? How's it holding up? I live in Central AZ. Take care.

Hi Roger, I really like your system. Thanks for posting. I have a much larger pond to filter. My question regarding the vortex filters.. Is there a inlet and outlet at the top of the barrel? Are the pipes coming out of the bottom ,are they for drainage? Then how, and how often to you have to clean out the sediment?

Love it. I've been considering ducks as a means of helping manage garden pests, and all I keep hearing is how messy they are, particularly with the water. I keep thinking this is a resource. If I may ask, what are you using to run your 3 inch pipes through the garbage cans for your vortex filtration system?

Won't it damage the pump to leave it on without water? Would love to hear that it doesn't cause damage! We use a pump for our aquarium siphon to do water changes and I am always careful to keep it submerged. I could just be reacting to the sound though!

On the water hyacinth in the filter grow beds. Because of its hi growth rate,water-hyacinth is a great to grow as a fodder but the other end is that it is invasive and not legal to sell or even possess in Many states without a special permit. The growth rate of water-hyacinth is among the highest of any known plant. Birds carry it to other water bodies.

so, the pump is powerful enough to move the ducks' solid droppings from the bed of the pond and up into the pipes?

What size of pumps are you using?

Some of the foam and perhaps other items you are using in you setup are not food grade and not safe in a garden. Foam for example is not safe. Otherwise I LOVE your setup and I plan to make a similar system. With food safe material only in mine though. My ducks & Geese will love it. I will also use a solar setup with an Air Lift Pump to reduce cost. Great video.

This is pretty awesome! I am looking into doing something similar. Wondering why you didn't run your skimmer pump through your filtration system? I don't particularly like the idea of a waterfall in the pond not emitting clean water as this could be a drinking water source for our chickens and ducks. Am planning on just running a skimmer pump, and higher capacity pump through the same similar tiered aquaponics system. Do your forsee any issues with that?
