oztooltalk review the latest innovation from Bosch Professional, the X-LOCK grinder wheel change system.
oztooltalk suspect this grinder innovation is around to stay, so don't get left behind! We use the new GWX 18V-10 PSC grinder for a bunch of jobs, and feel pretty damn impressed ....

excellent as always - definitely way of the future - as is starlock .Waiting for excuse to replace my multi and my grinder.Looking forward also to a brushless cordless track saw from bosch. Having used Makita all my life I have become a bosch fanboy of late - now have a collection strictly for home use , not site work getting trashed as do my makitas - as everyone will have experienced , coworkers grab the nearest tool.Love the reviews fellas , keep them coming.

I have multiple grinders that I use with a flap disk, cutoff wheel, and grinding disk. While I will stay with that setup at the shop, this would be a great option when going mobile. That's 2 less tools to pack out. The brake is a big bonus. No more waiting for it to coast to a stop. Good stuff!

In the metalworking area it is common to have multiple grinders. One with a cut-off, one with a wire brush, flapdisk.. because it's faster and less annoying to change disks than tools. This kinda changes it, changing the disk is faster than changing between grinders. And you only have to handle one grinder/one cable. And it's probably cheaper than 2-4 grinders

Thats why I have 4 grinders lol... Unfortunately 2 of them are corded so I tend to grab a grinder with the disk I want, pull it to my work piece and drag one of the other grinders off the bench and onto the ground breaking whatever disk was on it and roll my eyes and say f#*k sake...

Not that im going to rush out and buy a new grinder but this is great. I often run 2 grinders if im going between cutting and grinding a bunch to save changing disks. Also whenever i grab my big 18x2 9" makita and put a disk on it i always have to double and tripple check to make sure i got all the flanges right and all that. Plus the safety aspect. my dad years ago was changing to a wire wheel on a grinder and flicked it on, the grinder wound itself up in his jumper and stalled. In the end it was the little overload button that popped on the power board that shut the grinder off. I was a bit angry he was changing disks with it plugged in still but im guilty of that aswell. Or leaving the battery on on a cordless one. Overall, cant wait to see more brands come onboard with that.

Good stuff here! I hope it gets adopted sooner. Out of topic. Is there any chance we'll see a video comparison that'll include the AEG Fusion brushless heavy duty drill against the others like the Dewalt DCD 996? I thought I saw the video for that drill but it came after the comparison video went live. Any chance we'll see that?

Great video, great info! Hopefully it will become standard soon. Convenient, fast, super safe and smart! Bosch nailed it again. Just a matter of time, other brands...I mean accessories (discs/wheels) manufacturers will start making them. When X-Lock is it going to be available in Australia? Cheers guys

toolcraze.net/makita-joins-x-lock-with-new-18v-brushless-angle-grinder-dga519zx1-dga519rtj1/ This is Makita with x-lock. I think x-lock is promising, but I already have a grinder. I'm not interested in getting rid of it for the sake of x-lock. I would really love to see x-lock on 9" as the nut tightens up more than on 5" grinders. Most of the time you can get by without tool as long as you don't put a ton of pressure onto the wheel as you're cutting. I have tried the GWX15 grinder with x-lock. It feels a lot more powerful than the one I have which is said to be 1000 (don't believe in that). All of these things are adding weight onto the tool. Some battery tools are really a lot heavier than corded, still not with an edge in performance. There's still some ways to go in terms of getting more power with less weight. I would love to see for example battery-carrying belts to help reduce fatigue.

No, no it's not. They're inventing a problem for the sake of marketing. I have been doing metalworking for almost 20 years changing the wheel is the least of issues when using a grinder. Making things like variable speed, clutch mechanisms for the inevitable binding every now and then and narrower heads to get into smaller spaces more standard features would be much better money and time spent in my opinion. Changing a wheel happens very infrequent and doesn't take much longer than using this x-lock system once you're good at it. No wrench needed for wheel mounting or removal like they always like to exaggerate.
@krusch75
@krusch75 4 жыл бұрын
Had this demonstrated in our workshop. Nice feature if your use your grinder lightly in good access areas. The clip system seemed fragile. And we jam our grinders inside tight areas constantly hitting the lock nut. Even the salesman agreed that it was a nice feature for electricians etc. But might not be a long term solution for a metal workshop. I have seen a lot of videos on youtube etc where the demonstraters, workers etc use the spanner really jamming the nut. Totally unecessary. A good hand twist an your up and running. It is counteractive and will tighten itself when used. Only time youl probably need the spanner on a 5" grinder is if you have jammed the blade and really tightened it, and a good handgrip wont loosen the disc. We just hold the brake and hit it against something. Or use a slag hammer, a piece of metal. Anything you can hit the bastard with. Your changing the disc anyway. Doesnt matter if you brake the disc then. So to sum it up. X-lock is a nice amateur feature, and not necessary at all if you know what your doing. Probably it will cause issues with the lock sooner than later for a pro user.

I've had some wire wheels come loose, nearly unwind fully off actually. I do the have tighten and hand off but sometimes nicer on the brake pin as it can be bent or broken, and that sucks big time.

Acting like changing wheels on a grinder is some monumental accomplishment is disingenuous and reminds me of those info commercials that portrays everyone as idiotic and can't handle the most menial of tasks.
@OZToolTalk
@OZToolTalk 4 жыл бұрын
i don't think we acted like it was monumental at all, nor assumed everyone is idiotic. you're welcome to disagree, but I stand by the point that for contractors on the run like myself, who might often only use the grinder for 10 seconds for the day sometimes, the fast disc change is refreshing. Not world changing.
@OZToolTalk
@OZToolTalk 4 жыл бұрын
and by the way, would you like to go back to a drill chuck that doesn't self tighten? non SDS versions of jigsaws, recipro saws, sds rotary, multi-tool? cos Bosch invented most of those too. it adds up.
