Overview
The Hangar 9® P-47 Thunderbolt PNP bridges the gap between foam and balsa pilots perfectly! For the sport and club pilot looking to transition from a foam to balsa/wood aircraft, the new Fun Scale P-47 Thunderbolt delivers a true Plug-N-Play® completion Fun Scale model of one of the most popular WWII warbirds ever modeled. Foam RC pilots will be familiar with the P-47 brushless outrunner power system, wide variety of battery options and easy field assembly. It features lightweight, balsa and plywood construction with carbon fiber reinforcements and is finished in genuine UltraCote® that's long lasting and easy to maintain. The two-piece plug-in wings allows for convenient transportation and set up. Pilots can be ready to fly in much less time than it takes to charge a battery. At the workbench, the P-47 assembly is easy with only common tools needed. All you need to do is bolt the model together, install the receiver, charge a battery and fly. Flying a balsa warbird aircraft has never been easier. The new Hangar 9® Fun Scale P-47 Thunderbolt PNP makes it easy to fly and look good doing it.

Balsa is King! If you've only flown foamies you are missing the best part of this hobby. Building either from a kit or scratch is fulfilling and so rewarding when you maiden. And glo or gas, though not as convenient as EP, cannot be matched. Own a balsa plane with a Saito 4 stroke and you'll never look back. We cannot lose this part of the hobby.

Horizon Hobby (Hangar 9) has done a lot to help kill this aspect of the hobby in the short time since absorbing Hobbico and basically gaining a monopoly in the industry. All they really want to sell is foam, electric, AS3X. They single handedly took almost every balsa kit available off the market immediately and will never offer their equivalent again. Even the limited balsa models they sell, like this one, are obviously geared towards electric power.

Shelby you are right to a certain extent. Thankfully there are people on the internet Lazar cutting kits for people. There are kits but not being sold by the big guys.

I started flying with a Balsa plane in the 1990s. I had very little time or money as I had a young family and worked long hours so built my Ben Buckle Taylorcraft over a period of 2 years..what I ended up with was a beautiful plane that looked and flew great but....when foam came along I could have a more scale looking plane straight out of the box and if it crashed, it was only money I lost not building hours. I keep meaning to fly my Balsacraft Hurricane again but couldnt bear to lose it if something went wrong.

@@johnorabone6112 Yes, the smaller shops are slowly trying to fill the void. But the void needing to be filled gets smaller and smaller as the majority of people flying aren't modellers and will simply buy a mass produced foamy with AS3X. A good bit of these people are the people who fly a few planes and move on from the hobby, they form a never ending stream of customers. That is why Horizon is able to keep adding new electronics to the mustang and Corsair and continuously sell them. In the meantime the guys who enjoy building kits are left scrounging for the few good ones that are available and these little companies will have a hard time staying in business. They are making money off instant gratification pilots who just want to fly and after they can they lose interest, but there's always another standing right behind him ready to buy a plane.

@@shelbyseelbach9568 yes the golden age of this hobby was when you had to build what you flew and because of that you knew how planes go together how servos and IC engines worked. You put your blood sweat and tears into it and it’s such a rewarding experience when it lifts off the runway for the first time. And these big name foam planes are taking it away it’s not the same feeling.

Hey Guys. I love your video's. They make my day each time. They inspire me and I learn a lot from your comments/assessments. In my RC model flying club, I am the cameraman. Before I film a (maiden)flight, I set the manual focus off the camera to 'infinite'. The autofocus tends to struggle when tracking a small object in the sky. Warm greetings from Belgium.

Eat the planes?! Hahaha! Has anyone been jokingly asked by their wife at least once, right at the time you purchase your plane over the counter saying "Can you eat the plane when you blow your budget for food?" This cracked me up! I'll eat planes with you any day Captains Robert and Blaz should the day come when this planet goes awry with its food supply. Keep the fun coming, salute to you both from down under! Legends you both are.

The chief-designer of the P -47 plane was a guy named Alexander Kartvelli....his engineering philosophy was simple - " If you design something , DESIGNIT BIG !!! " ....The only reason why the P 47 fall behind from his main job of bomber escort was his shorter range compared with the P - 51. The Mustang could go to Berlin , fight and return . The Thunderbolt could reach only the Ruhr industrial zones after which she had to turn toward England ....leaving the bombers to the hungry claws of the german fighters.....

The somewhat consensus would be to whack a 10cc Saito 4 stroke and some fuel proofer in this beast, whilst we're still allowed ic engines! 🤣These types balsa warbirds are not easy to fly. Such a beautiful thing Hangar 9 have created here. Eoooow! Heavy, and it needs its airspeed and power, but a lovely representation of an iconic USA warbird. Like all of us, I too am worried for the children on this planet. Big salute from London. 👍

This is sooooo sexy eyyyyyy!!! You can't beat wooden planes prijatelji! I love the P-47 Thunderbolt. It was one of the greatest warbirds of its time. Very strong and could take a beating. As far as the moles, they sell a solar powered mole deterrent, that you put in the ground, not poison, it makes a noise that drives them crazy and they leave, it does take a week or two to work but it works and they will not come back. you will need about 6 of them, get them from where you get materials from like home depot or some thing like that. we love ya oh ya do not hammer them into the ground, make a hole with a 2x2 and install them at ground level. then you can mow over them. nice plane

Your English is impeccable so everybody in the USA understands you and brother. One question i have is i noticed you take off from right to left . I learned taking off from left to right and we fly in a counter clockwise pattern. After a couple of mid airs and safety the pilots would let the other pilots know of their intentions if they were going leave the pattern or land. The P47 was made by Republic aircraft on Farmingdale Long Island New York and also A10 Wart Hog . I can go on and on but that's enough about Long Islands aviation history for now. Later

Would it be helpful on a first flight to take the plane up high, reduce power, and then slow it down until it stalls (or almost stalls) while paying attention to the amount of up elevator you give it and how high the nose gets before it becomes wobbly and unstable? This will show if the plane has any tendency to tip stall or spiral to the ground and should give some indication of how slow you can get it for the landing. This is a bit risky, I know, but on the bright side, if it spirals to the ground, you no longer have to worry about landing it! Thanks for the very entertaining video. (Noobie pilot from NC/USA)

Is there a difference in the way Balsa planes fly? I might be imagining it (and I havent flown a balsa plane for at least 15 years!) but to me foam seems different, its as if the extra rigidity of the Balsa planes gives it a more precise feel. This is based purely on my memory of transitioning from balsa onto a foam WOT 4 e. Wonder if anyone else feels the same way?
