AMEN TO THAT - Music should never be played when it come's to the sound of a Merlin Engine. P-51's should be heard, not drowned in annoying background music.

That's funny because you have the same name as one of the top P47 aces, he was the first USAAF pilot in the ETO to break Eddie Rickenbacker's WW1 record of 26 aerial victories. Robert Johnson of the 56th Fighter Group 8th Air Force, some people including myself consider him to be America's best fighter pilot of the war, his official tally is 27 enemy aircraft destroyed in aerial combat but German records show he actually downed 33 of their aircraft which would coincidence with the addition of his "probables" that never got confirmed, Richard Bong may have ended the war with 40 confirmed in the Pacific but he had aircraft like bombers to add to his score wherein Johnson shot down nothing but German fighter's with some of them being piloted by the best aces Germany had, Johnson's 5th kill the one that made him an ace was a German fighter pilot that had over 200 aerial victories, and Johnson got all of his in just around 13 months where it took Bong 2 years to get his 40 plus the fact that Japanese aircraft were notoriously easier to shoot down than the German aircraft due to their lightweight and them lacking armor protection for the pilot and self sealing fuel tanks.

They didn't call it the Cadillac of the Sky for nothing.

@@Crashed131963 The Finns in the 1939 winter war with Russia definitely proved that the Buffalo with a capable pilot at the controls could be a deadly fighter plane.

Worse yet some of them rained down 20mm explosive shells instead of .50's. Either way you're pretty screwed being on the receiving end of one. The best one for that though is the P47 with it's 8 .50 cals, there's an interview with a WW2 pilot here on KZfaq who flew in the Eagle Squadron before the US entered the war and then flew in the USAAF afterwards, he got to fly just about every Allied fighter you can name except the P47, when ask by the interviewer if he ever had flown one he said "No, but I'll tell you this about the P47, it had 8 .50 cal's compared to 6 that were in planes I'd flown, one day while flying a patrol in a P51 I saw a group of Thunderbolt's below me going in on an attack run on a train, so I dropped down to watch, the two lead P47's went in abreast of each other and attacked the locomotive first, with the 16 .50 cal's between the two of them I watched as they flipped the locomotive over on it's side, let me tell you something, 2 P51's couldn't do that!!!".

I saw that same Corsair fly at an airshow in Cleveland not too many years back. I had the good timing (for once in my life) of standing as close as a spectator could to it when the pilot climbed in it and fired it up to fly one of his rotations at the show, hearing one of them fire up is just as impressive as when they fly by, it's definitely a waking beast that isn't getting up in the best of moods.

kirkhere Sorry old bean the Brits DID NOT build the merlin for the Mustang !!!! or did you not know that ???? In 1940 RR came to the USA begging PACKARD Motors to build the merlin, Packard agreed to build them, IF they could make changes for mass production. PACKARD was an off shore shadow factory for the Brits and delivered 37,137 Merlins to the Brits, PACKARD also built 18,000 V1650-3 & 7 Merlins for the Mustangs. So to thank the Brits for building that awesome engine for the Mustang was/is and always will be BULL$HIT !!!! The P51 Mustangs were 100% AMERICAN MADE!!!!! Facts of history son !!!!

@@wilburfinnigan2142 I am not, nor have I ever claimed to be, an expert in aviation history. I am an American who always heard it told that the Merlin engine was a British contribution. It was not intended to be a political statement. I was just misinformed. I appreciate the information.

At a time when the focus was on building a war machine with the sole purpose of going nose to nose with the enemy it’s amazing that it ended up looking so cool almost 80 years later.

If you look up the BuNo, in this case 92050, you can look up aircraft. It's a FG-1D (Goodyear) same as a F4U-1D. Worked on all aircraft I've tried so far.

From what I understand the distinctive whistling sound had something to do with the oil coolers in the leading edges of the wings, if that is the case then whether or not they make that sound might have to do with whether or not they have the oil cooler shutters opened up. Although I'm not 100% sure on that one.
