The process in this video may be used on other applications when diagnosing timing issues, testing may vary between manufacturers.
In this video we are working on a 2008 Volkswagen Jetta with a 2.0t GDI engine. The customer complaint is a flashing check engine light which is a severe misfire. The faults stored in this vehicle are p0016 cmp/ckp correlation and p0300 random misfire. Some important information is that this vehicle just came from another shop and they recently replaced the timing chain!
I hope you guys enjoy this video and thanks for watching.

Great video. I've had a few of these come through the shop with the same problem over the years. You can pull the magnetic adjuster then start the car and the idle should smooth out. Very little oil drips out the N205 when running. It's also easy to identify in measuring blocks when N205 fails. It will stick at 28* if I remember correctly.

I don’t mind the format and thanks for the video this is the first time I seen one like that too it’s good to know I have seen one before that had the screen from the camshafts bridge jammed into one of the slot then it had the same symptoms and fault codes . I assume that you have the VW special tool that screws into the spark plug hole and it has a dial indicator so you can check to see if the timing mark on the crankshaft damper is correct because as you probably already know the gear on the end of the crankshaft goes only one way but if the crank was moved with the bolt removed and without the special spacer installed then there is a chance that the timing could be off then there are specs to mesure at two spots on the intake and exhaust cams because there is no specific timing marks on this engine it’s done with different coloured links but if someone has a scope and knows what there are doing then it’s probably best.

Hi, I came across this video while researching a P0016 code on my 2011 B8 A4. I have since checked out a few others and subscribed. Nice content. On cold start the car seems fine but when the idle drops, it runs terrible. What I've seen so far on VCDS Live Data is that the camshaft adjustment specified, camshaft adjustment actual and camshaft adjustment activation do not move at all. They remain at 38°, 38° and 6.250% respectively! On older live data I have saved, I see they all move couple seconds after start up and continue to move after that. Have you even seen where the specified value doesn't budge at all?

1.6fsi gives same fault, I replaced plugs, camshaft sensor. Didn't help, but when I cleaned the solenoid, the fault light went off for a moment, about 20km and the light was back on. Will these be able to disassemble the solenoid or will the car be rebuilt. The car runs beautifully when the malfunction light comes on, but when it resets to zero it starts to run bad for just 3 seconds and when it detects the fault it starts to run again beautifully. When starting, the machine does not make any sound that sounds like a loose chain. That sounds like a wheel problem, and the machine lacks power but lets go over 3000 rpm. Do you have any tips for me to do?

Great video. A little more detail on the tricky bits ie how did you remove this Oil Control Valve --- was it retained by bolts: was is a special fork took into the holes in the recessed part of the flange??
@throttlebottle5906
@throttlebottle5906 6 жыл бұрын
he changed to content aimed at helping experienced techs, not so much beginners. the solenoid itself is held on with 3 bolts, the actual oil control valve itself threads in and has left hand threads... hold/lock camshaft in place or you can make it jump time since the chain/tensioner will be loose

Tom, welcome back thank you for the video and info one question is this wave form for cam/crank correlation universal with all make and model or it depends on the manufacturer. thank you and cheeeeers
@IntradeMotors
@IntradeMotors 6 жыл бұрын
It's not universal what is universal only older Otto cycle but new engines with patents on cam defasors etc... there is always differences. A known good waveform from Pico scope library would be what to reference to . Complete different is likely Mazda skyactive as that is not Otto cycle as far as I know Atkinson Otto mix or something so cam timing would there differ extremely to this I would say.

did you take the bad valve apart to see why it broke/stuck? I'm wondering if something got jammed inside it or it just broke due to wear. must not have been a shop used to working on VW's, but you think they'd have noticed having to push the solenoid itself on hard and I wonder if it actually needed the chain and parts. yikes, that poor shop has some explaining to do :))

Hey man I know you and EXOVCDS are the VW experts. I need help lol. How do the VW 3 wire knock sensor circuits work? There's no info on identifix or mitchell. Are they supposed to have a bias voltage. I'm getting code for both knock sensors on a 2017 golf for circuit low. Unplugged at the harness side im getting good shield ground and 0.8 volts on both + and - for the knock sensor circuit. They're not shorted to the shield. Don't know what else to do don't have info. If you can help me thanks if not thats fine thanks anyway I'm sure you get a hundred questions a day and can't answer them all.

Hi man, big thanks for your video, I got same proble with my Audi B8 but because of excessive burning oil and bad piston common problem, I didnt even want to touch it seeing how bad the engine job is on those cars. My question for you is, any idea if that control valve issue could have something to do with burning oil(1L every fuel tank fill). Car as 160 000km stage 1. Thanks 🙏
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics

I don’t think the control valve would have anything to do with oil burning. My guess would be rings or valve seals. Probably rings

You need a Cmp ckp relationship waveform to start. Could the cyl 2 misfire be its own problem. Also could the control valve be your issue ?

OK, hope your open to criticism. In looking at your past videos, I believe you work at a VW dealership. You mention that this car was in another shop where they ended up putting in a timing chain. In doing that, how could they not see the problem with this advancement mechanism. Was it a VW dealership? On the other hand your are extremely thorough but, to the point of annoying. Sorry dude, just my opinion. I mean if someone did not hear you the first time, all they need do is rewind. Examples; other shop did a timing chain, mentioned over four times. P0016, over three times. The timing out by 81 degrees, over five times, etc, etc. You show a picture of a scope capturing some patterns and explain that there is something off about the timing but, never show a good pattern of what it should look like. You show a picture of the control valve and solenoid but, don't show where on the engine it is. You mention to remove this can possible cause the timing chain to skip a tooth making me think this is mounted on the camshaft because you state the camshaft has to be held in order to remove this part. If that is the case, why didn't the other shop see this sense they replaced the timing chain. If things were not mentioned so repeatedly, this 18 minute video could of been done in 5 minutes. It's evident it is not here to show us how to diagnose this specific problem on this specific engine. At this point, the video does not help me to do this to a specific car.
